The purpose of the Pompano Beach Historical society is to collect and preserve the history of Pompano Beach, the second oldest city in Broward County and the fifth oldest city in South Florida. Pompano Beach was incorporated in 1908. You can find the building for the historical society in Founders Park.

The Historical Society holds many events in the city. I recently took their historical bus tour that began in the Kester Cottages in Founders Park and for two hours visited historical buildings in the city including the Bailey Hotel which now houses the BaCA Art Center in downtown, the Ali Building, the Sample McDougald House, and the Hillsboro Lighthouse Museum. Tours are $15. The Historical Society also runs the Pompano Green Market Saturday mornings across from City Hall. The market hearkens back to Pompano's roots as a farming community. Another event they recently held was their annual road show and yard sale. The historical society also hosts lectures and public programs. They are currently seeking donations to refurbish the McNab House into a restaurant.

The Kester Cottages originated with Stuart and William L. Kester were originally from West Virginia. They came to Pompano to pursue fishing in the 1920's and in 1937 built the wood frame bungalows that they called "pepper crates" in Pompano and Deerfield Beach. Since they were inexpensive to build soon everyone was constructing them for residents and visitors alike. They were constructed of Dade County pine and had indoor plumbing and running water. They measured 25 feet by 35 feet. Some had a beach view and ranged from one to three bedrooms. At their height of popularity there were 150 of them. All of the cottages were white with playing card suites cut of out their shutters. Houses cost under a thousand dollars to build and you could rent one for as little as $29 a month. I wish you could still get beach front property for that amount.

The two Kester cottages owned by the Pompano Beach Historical Society were donated to them by Kester's nephew Stewart. They were moved from their original location to Founders Park behind the Historical Society building. Usually they are locked up but they open them for tours when they do the once a month historical trolley tour. The next time the cottages will be open is on January 12 from 9 to 10 AM. The cottages are filled with historical items from Pompano Beach's history. If you can't tour them they have a wonderful 3-D virtual tour on the website they have have set up for the cottages. One other Kester cottage remains on the grounds of the Butler House in Deerfield Beach.

With so many great events the Historical Society truly offers something for everyone. You can sign up to volunteer, donate money, or see their schedule of events on their website.
Bayview Park

This is a lovely 6.8 acre park in the upscale Bayview neighborhood of Ft. Lauderdale, It is located next to Cardinal Gibbons High School. Located on a spacious corner lot, the park is very open with many access points. There is an ample parking area lining one side of the park.

Park amenities include lighted athletic fields, tennis courts, basketball court, open play area, picnic tables, ADA accessible shaded playground with many climbing and play structures, tennis court, and restroom.

I walked the exercise path that takes you around the perimeter of the park, Along the way I encountered a lot of nice shade trees and manicured landscaping throughout the park, I saw a couple of other people exercising and a few were having a picnic but the majority of the people were concentrated in the playground area. This is a nicer than average neighborhood park in one of the nicer neighborhoods of Ft. Lauderdale.
Boca Isles Park

Open everyday from 8 AM until sunset, this is a well maintained 1.1 acre neighborhood park. There is a small parking lot with four spaces.

Park amenities include an exercise path, open play space, two playgrounds with climbing structures and an ADA swing, picnic table and grill, and benches. There are lots of tall tress in the park providing shade. It is important to note that the following is prohibited while you are in the park: tobacco products, motorized vehicles, pets including dogs, and alcohol.

This park is great for exercise, taking the kids to play, or having a picnic. I was pleased to see that they finally banned smoking. While I enjoyed walking the exercise path amenities are limited so unless you live in the neighborhood you can skip this in favor of one of Boca Raton's larger parks. like nearby Sugar Sand.
Riverland Preserve

Riverland Preserve is a 5 acre park in the Riverland neighborhood which is located in a SW corner of Fort Lauderdale off Davie Boulevard. The neighborhood is in a beautiful area that has an Old Florida feel with 200 year old oak trees. Many of the homes here were built in the 50's for the returning veterans of WWII who flocked to Florida. Like all Ft. Lauderdale parks Riverland is open every day from 6 AM until 9 PM.

The city purchased the land for the park from the Black family in 2017. This land was their private home. Part of the funding to purchase the park came from $750,000 that was put aside by the county when Riverland was annexed into the City of Fort Lauderdale in 2002. When the property was first set for sale it was slated to be divided into subplots for housing development. The neighborhood was concerned about keeping the areas character intact and saving the 400 tropical trees on the property. They petitioned the city to keep the land in its natural state and they agreed to purchase the property and turn it into a park.

Riverland is a passive park that still looks like someone's house in the neighborhood. The first time I looked for this park I actually drive by it. The original house still sits on the property along with several outbuildings. Behind the house is the preserve has ancient oak trees, sandal palms, laurel oaks, native wild orchids, slash pine trees, shrubs, banana trees, pink pineapple plants and other native plants. I saw ibis and the trees in this neighborhood are known for being a home to owls. There are no trails but there are benches.

This preserve was one of my more interesting Ft. Lauderdale park finds. I love how the neighborhood rallied together to save the ecologically important piece of land. During my visit most of the preserve was flooded due to the heavy rains we recently experienced but I was intrigued by the plants I saw, especially the pink pineapples! and I will be back to explore further next time I am in the area.
Sunview Park

This is a 20 acre neighborhood park in Ft Lauderdale. The park takes its name from two little leagues, Sunset Lire League and Broadview Park Little League.

This is sports park. Amenities include a baseball/softball field, basketball court, restrooms, computer lab, and community center. The park offers classes, clubs, association meetings, and after school care, summer, and teen programs.

The park looks very well maintained. While I prefer parks with hiking trails it is nice that the city provides a safe place for recreation leagues. It is also good to know that they provide child care and classes.
