You will see very breathing views while climbing the rock and on the top. But to climb to the top it takes lot of efforts. Some steps are rock cutted and some are iron metal. First half is still ok. But the second half is too steep and big steps.

We were amazed by both the gardens which are beautiful, the rock itself and the climb up but still pondering why anyone would decide to build on the top of the rock when there is flat ground all around. But Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress built on a massive column of rock that reaches nearly 200 meters high. The description I found says that it dates back to the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495 AD), who chose this site as his new capital. He decorated the walls with frescoes, and built an impressive palace right on top of the rock column, accessible only through the mouth of an enormous carved lion.

The 1200 or so steps to the top are a mix of metal stairs with handrails and stone steps with no handrails.

It’s a strenuous activity that is best done in grippy shoes or sandals.

There are lots of guides who will offer their services but you don’t need one.

The souvenir hawkers were very low key and took no for an answer.

The view from the top is worth the climb but don’t forget to carry water.

Old monarch castle, very well signposted historic site with many informative plaques describing each location.
A climb to the top of the rock fortress requires a moderate to high level of fitness. There are no lifts, just steps and ramps. The treads of the original steps are of white stone and made deliberately narrow (I was told, it was done to make it difficult for attackers to rush up the stairs) .
A marvel of ancient engineering with working water fountains, underground conduits and water reservoirs!.
Highly recommended for a visit, even if you don't ascend all the way to the top of the rock.

I recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Sigiriya, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. The ancient rock fortress, surrounded by lush greenery, offers a mesmerizing glimpse. The architecture and engineering marvels showcased here are truly awe-inspiring. The ascent to the summit might seem daunting at first, but fear not—it’s not as tough as it appears. The breathtaking views from the top are absolutely worth every step.

For those considering a visit, I’d like to mention the convenient foreign entry fee, which makes it accessible for international travelers. And what’s even more noteworthy is that Indian visitors can explore this iconic site for just $15—a great deal indeed!

If you’re up for a slightly different adventure, I’d recommend trying the trek to Pidurangala as well. It’s a fantastic alternative that offers a unique perspective of Sigiriya itself. The two treks complement each other beautifully, allowing you to fully appreciate the grandeur of this region.

All in all, Sigiriya is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a blend of cultural exploration and stunning vistas. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience!
