Restaurant Shoon Huat

Came here with quite high expectation but left with disappointment.
The bah kut teh is quite decent. This pot would suit people who doesnt like strong taste.
The mah yau kai (sesame oil chicken) is tough and dry.
The braised pork trotter came with very stong burnt smell. This is one of the worst tee kah i have tried in a restaurant.
One thing that stop me from coming back again was when we feedback to the staff, the response was "its like that one".
Anyway, the ambience is actually quite nice.

Comfort food or Bak kut teh - soup is not too herbal or peppery, good blend. So my kids can take it. Some of these soups are too peppery for my kids or the herbal taste too strong. This is just right and you can add so many other ingredients. The other side dishes such as the sesame seed oil chicken rocks too! Just that service can’t be top notch as they are very very busy!

Maybe due to weekend and quite crowded today. The soup was very bland and liver was placed at the bottom, by the time we able to clear the top ingredients and reach the liver, it became very hard. They may want to serve the liver separately so we can dip it in the hot soup before eat. Quite disappointed with today meals, but will be back again to try.

Service is good and prompt, staff are friendly and helpful.

However, the same cannot be said for their dishes.
BKT soup used to be good but tastes flat and diluted now.
Liver dish was overcooked and didn't taste fresh.
Wine chicken dish was average and unmemorable.

Overall, food standards have dropped over the years and before covid times.
New customers might be content with what they are offering now.
However, for customers who have been enjoying Shoon Huat's BKT over the past two decades, we can only lament on the flavour profile of what is lost.

There are many better BKT options around so I would hesitate to return again.

You know how we say Singapore BKT is the peppery type while the Malaysia one is the herbal type?
If you’re looking for one that’s neither peppery or herbal, this is the place 😅
I’m not a fan obviously and didn’t enjoy any dishes except for their sesame soya chicken. I’m sure there are better options somewhere else.

Although plenty of staffs but turn over too high and they have only 1-2 minutes to clear and clean the table. When pass us the table, it was wet. We wiped with our own tissue and they stinks and brown like never thoroughly cleaned even after business hours.

The food is closest to Klang BKT we can find in the region so no choice, we will still come back with more tissues and sanitizers as food drop on the table, our kids will pick up and eat.

Service is fast though as they are focusing in maximum profits from Singapore visitors.

The price is still affordable for local but at a higher side.

Whenever we are in Johor Bahru this is the place we will visit for lunch. The legacy and branding speaks for itself. They now have a huge sitting area internally as well. There is nothing much to complain; the soup is heavenly delicious, the pork ribs are soft and tender, the sesame chicken is flavourful; the tau kee has all the “lor” broth absorbed absolutely well. All of us had an enjoyable time and we will be back for more soon !!!
