I was hoping for something a bit more impressive to be honest with interesting features/shops/cafes around but the area was a bit noisy and the palace looked a bit grubby.

Dam Square in Amsterdam is a must-visit for any city traveler. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, this historic square is surrounded by iconic buildings such as the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk church. It's a perfect spot to experience the city's bustling atmosphere. Moreover, Dam Square serves as an ideal starting point to explore other Amsterdam attractions, such as the Red Light District and the Canal District, both within walking distance. A place that is both historic and vibrant, capturing the essence of Amsterdam.

Large, fairly empty square in-town. We were there on a chilly Christmas season day, and not much was happening. Beautiful architecture around!

This is the Versailles of the Netherlands. It’s so rich with history and you learn so much about Dutch culture. They also have a free audio tour.

Museum itself was nice. But being unable to seat for a long time (recommended for full tour is 75 min. and highlight tour is 35 min.) was very hard! You need to place more benches on other places.
