First of all just contact Eat Mexico in order to do this safely and with some guidance. Adrian (our guide) is a cook/chef/culinary graduate (as we’re our other guides with other companies). Which made talking food a no brainer. He explained much more than I was bargain for about how the local “system” works all the way up! We moved effortlessly through the market (once we made it past the tents). The true market is very well lit and friendly. I don’t think there were many glances our way since he spends so much time there. Don’t expect your group to be more than 4 since there is not room. The only leer we got the 5 days in CDMX was entering the market and in Polanco the locals were amazed that we went there at all. Great food, great local guide information and really good freakin food!

Wow, overwhelmingly large market with everything from Mexico you may need. Good local food stalls.

They will have anything you think about there. However, there are some places I would question the sanitary conditions.

One of a kind market that highlights the community and commerce of Mexico City. We booked a market tour through Eat Mexico and it was the highlight of our time in Mexico. La Merced is massive and filled with tight walkways—without a local guide we would have been totally overwhelmed and lost. Thankfully our guide took us to a dozen food stands and vendors where we could sample everything from tacos to tamales to moles and more.

Complete sensory saturation. Everything for sale. Even haircut for 60 mxn. Bought a nice polo shirt. Some vendors allow you to try if you want to taste their food. The place to buy everything.

As long as you are happy to find what you want in this huge bustling maze, it’s a good place to shop. Fruit, veg and meat available at prices below those in supermarkets.

I visited during Día de Muertos. Took a taxi there, no good too many cars. I walked 3 blocks to get there. Nice place, lots of people, many things to see. I arrived at 11 am. Left at 3 pm I took a bus that left me a few blocks from the Zócalo.
