They seemed to expect me to have an in-depth knowledge of their organization, even though I was specifically there to apply for a communications manager role and learn more about their mission. When they asked me what decolonization meant, I explained my understanding of the term. As a person of Black heritage, I immediately referred to the ongoing decolonization supposedly happening for my historically enslaved people. I provided my perspective on the matter, although I did not delve into the topic extensively since it was not the purpose of the interview and I found the question inappropriate considering the position I was applying for.
Furthermore, I noticed that two individuals took turns asking questions, and one of them had a poor connection that made communication difficult. Despite the issue clearly stemming from their end, they did nothing to remedy it. Despite my difficulties in clearly hearing the person in question, they continued to ask questions without considering my hearing problem. It is surprising that with two executive directors, only one could not conduct the interview effectively.
The next day, with the intention of maintaining a respectful dialogue, I sent a message to the organization requesting if we could arrange an in-person interview. I even apologized for the previous communication problems, even though the issue did not originate from my end, as I was genuinely interested in discovering their mission and advocating for their values. As they say, when in need, one adapts. However, the second person with the connectivity issue insinuated, in a disrespectful tone, that I was incompetent and that the position had been given to someone more qualified.
In conclusion, my experience with Food Secure Canada sheds light on a world of hypocrisy where appearances take precedence over actual competence.
We attended as a school group and the assistance and service was mediocre at best, unfortunately!
