It was designed by the British architect Claude Batley, and constructed by the Shapoorji Pallonji in 1930 in a record time of 21 months. The project was then costed INR 15.6 million.
When the station opened in 1930, The Times of India suggested that the name Bombay Central was inspired by the Grand Central Terminal in New York City. The paper argued that the station should have been called Kamathipura, after the area it was located in. The paper suggested that the name Kamathipura was probably ruled out, because the area is a red-light district.
The Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway extended its reach from Baroda to Pathankot via Delhi. The Colaba-Ballard Pier railway station proved insufficient in meeting the demands of a growing population which led the government to make plans for the construction of Bombay Central.
The present suburban route that once ran till Colaba was earlier served by Bellasis Road station. It was renamed Bombay Central (local) after the construction of the long-distance Bombay Central Terminus (BCT) on the eastern side.[5] On 1 Feb 2018, a resolution was passed to change the station code from BCT to MMCT.
Platforms and layout
Edit
The station is divided into two parts. The eastern half of the station serves long-distance trains operated by Western Railways while the western half serves commuter trains running on the Churchgate–Virar suburban section of Western Railways. The mainline section has five high level platforms terminating in a large concourse on the southern end. The suburban section has four high level platforms. All the platforms are connected by foot overbridges and the mainline platforms are wheelchair accessible from the south end.
Tickets and reservation
A large Passenger Reservation Center with several ticket windows is located on the east side of the mainline station. Tickets between any two stations in India on any train offering reserved accommodation can be purchased from this facility. There are many Unreserved Ticket Counters in the main concourse for purchasing unreserved tickets for immediate travel on express and passenger trains starting from Mumbai Central. The west and south exits of the suburban section of the station have ticket windows for purchasing tickets for travel on the suburban trains. Suburban train tickets can also be purchased from automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs) located at several locations in the station premises.
'Food and other facilities'
The concourse on the mainline side has an outlet of Rajdhani chain of restaurants serving authentic Indian food.
Bellasis Rail Café at Mumbai Central is located on the first floor near Bellasis Road overbridge connecting Mumbai Central station near the south end booking office. Items in this café are available in food packets, with ready to take away facility.
There are several stalls in the concourse and on the suburban platforms serving snacks, chips, bottled water and cold drinks (soda). There are book stalls in the main concourse and on the suburban platforms selling newspapers, magazines and other reading material. Train timetables are also available at the book stalls. Restrooms (toilets) are available in the concourse on the mainline side.

CSMT is one of the busiest railway stations in the country. Thousands of inter City/State long distance and short distance trains with local trains as well starts from here every few minutes. Travellers from all around the country as well as foreign tourists visit this station every day in huge numbers. One of the best management of railway scheduling can be observed here, unfortunately lags in a few basic necessities like the cart service for elderly people is very poor and not easy to find when needed. Platforms are not well planned and hence sometimes finding the coach is a challenge because no coach maps are available on the platform. Hot weather conditions the task to reach your reserved seat becomes more stressful, some ventilation system is needed to control the climate conditions on the platform.

Platform no 14,15,16 is good clean and easy to finding your reservation seat sufficient time , waiting area is good.all trains for Delhi ,Rajdhani,Nanded, Bhusawal,Nashik road is Departed here. We have relaxed some waiting and easily pick our seat from here.

An important railway station on the western line.
It's a train terminal for gujrat, Punjab, MP and some North bound trains.
Also it has platforms for sub urban train adjacent to the long distance section.

Ohhh my god🙏, one of the best railway stations in terms of Art, beautifully decorated walls, and specially huge glass paintings .
another huge plus point is that mumbai central railway station is connected to mumbai local rail network,
you just have to ask someone from where to buy local train tickets,
and people are so helpful they will also guide you about slow train, fast train, east west.. everything.. because in mumbai if you are new, then it might be very confusing that what is east and what is west 🤔.. also which trains halt at which station.. so just ask someone and enjoy your journey. there are enquiry counter too, but you might get a que and have to wait for your turn.

Mumbai Central Railway, Nice and clean railway station. Have waiting area for passengers. Food items are available at the railway station.
Seats are not that much comfortable. Have capsule stay area first available in India. One of the best stations located in the heart of Mumbai.
This station serves as the initial/end point for the express trains (trains moving in and out of Mumbai) as a part of western railways.
The recently innovative structure is really awesome and is photogenic too.
The station is cleaner than ever before.
The over-all experience is very good 😊. Jai Hind

Been to this place for first time since COVID. There is lots of construction, but Google maps does a good job. Again parking is a pain. Platforms were very clean, otherwise facilities can be better. Police did open my bag and checked - was not prepared for this, good i had time on me

Last station at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. The trains come from she'd and stay here for long time. Wait for engine to change so no need to hurry. The entry happens at the end point of the train so might have to walk a lot of your coach is the first one on the other end. There is a vehicle service available for it. The station is clean and nice along with a lounge facility.

CSMT Platform 16 is clear and clean and ventilated place and have place to sit. CSMT is a one of the best Railway Station in India. It is constructed by British times and it's architecture also beautiful. It is the terminal of Central Railways and Local trains in Mumbai.

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminal, a great place. Lack of hygiene and cleanliness, nice experience with Panchvati express as always, on time.

The platform and the outer area is very clean. The Coolies are available for picking up your bags. And proper system for pick and drop service as well Taxi stand. Recently the IRCTC has opened a restaurant made of Train Coach which is very attractive near the entrance of Platform No. 18.
