Top Monuments in Thessaloniki, Greece

A small and powerful monument to remind and commemorate a great loss. During the Holocaust, Thessaloniki lost more than 95% of its Jewish population. They were transported by train in absolutely inhumane conditions, by cattle train cars to Aushwitz - Birkenau where they perished. Most of them were exterminated upon arrival and almost all the rest died of exhaustion, starvation beating and execution while working as slaves. The monument stands in a corner of Plateia Eleftherias (Liberty Square) for a reason. This is the same public square where most of the Jewish male population was assembled by the German occupiers before the deportations. The main reason was to intimidate, humiliate and break the morale of their victims. Another goal was to assemble slave workers for the needs and purposes of the German occupying forces. Many individuals died during this assembly or later working as slaves in hard labor. Some months later the survivors of this ordeal were transported together with their families to Aushwitz concentration camp in Poland. This was accomplished in 19 train transports consisting of around 1800 to 1900 persons each, between March and August of 1943.

Not the best of parks, empty and sad but in a crowded city like this...is a breath of fresh air.

The park surrounding the statue is nice and relaxing, and in the night has more activity from the people that are enjoying the terraces and clubs around the city

Excellent location...a bit pricy

A beautifully crafted monument, but could have been placed on a pedestal. Not far from here is the "Tsimitski" shopping street.

The Holocaust Memorial in Thessaloniki on the waterfront. Unclear design and meaning

Before World War II, Salonika's Jewish population was about 50,000 it was the largest Jewish community in Greece. During the German occupation the ancient and vibrant Jewish community of Salonika was destroyed and after the War, fewer than 2,000 Jews lived in Salonika. A lot of small food and souvenirs stores this Christmas and small Luna park area for the kids to play! But usually after Christmas there is nothing interesting to see here

The statue of Venizelos is located in the garden on the north side of Aristotle Square in the center of Thessaloniki. It was built in memory of Eleftherios Venizelos, the great Greek statesman. He was born in 1864 and served as the Prime Minister and Prime Minister of Greece seven times. He was later called the father of modern Greece.

Μνημείο του Γρηγόρη Λαμπράκη στο σημείο (Βενιζέλου με Σπανδώνη) που τον χτύπησαν οι παρακρατικοί με το τρίκυκλο Γκοτζαμάνης και Εμμανουηλίδης. 22 Μαίου 1963. Μεταφέρθηκε στο ΑΧΕΠΑ τότε νέο νοσοκομείο της Θεσσαλονίκης. Αλλά δεν κατάφερε να επιζήσει.

Ο Λαμπράκης αν δεν σκοτωνόταν θα έγραφε ιστορία τύπου Ανδρέα Παπανδρέου.
Ήταν αθλητής, γιατρός, πολιτικός και Πελοποννήσιος.

Διαχρονικό μνημείο κατά του φασισμού. Στη μνήμη ενός ακόμη θύματος τέτοιων υπανθρώπων, έγινε χθες βράδυ συναυλία, στο σημείο - σύμβολο. Αλλά, όπως λένε και στο χωριό μου, Every cloud has a silver lining... Just like dance with the most lovely Vlut I've ever met!
