Love taking the ferry. When it all works right, it is a great escape. Passed through here many a time over the years. Some days you are ahead, some days there are delays. I use reservations as much as possible when the traffic warrants it. Pack your patience and if you are stuck for a while, sneak off to the nearby stores for a coffee or food.
The only way of getting to the islands - vehicle and walk on options. Truly recommend booking your ferry ticket ahead of time. The ferry itself felt almost like a cruise - super clean and plenty of spots to sit. There is also a mini cafeteria area with decent food (recommend the sweet potato fries and triple o Chipotle sauce). At the main dock by horseshoe bay, there is a clean washroom as you wait to be boarded. Great experience.
Took the Horseshoe Bay ferry to Gibson this Saturday morning, 7:30 am sailing. BC Ferry listed sailings as sold out but it didn't seem that way on the Ferry.

Nonetheless, the ride was calm and view with the sun rising was amazing.
Ferry was clean and staff was very friendly.

Great trip to Gibsons as this was only our 2nd time ever there.
Easy booking, absolutely nice sail to Vancouver island. We saw dolphins, whales and a incredible sunset. I can just recommend this sail.
I last visited here 15 years ago and it certainly has changed for the better.

More coffee places and eating places before you head off on the Ferry . I also noticed condos now built overlooking the Bay 😳

The upgraded departure area for the Ferries is beautiful. Great Customer Service for tickets and boarding passes and any other questions you might have.

At departure lounge there are washrooms , lots of seating and vending machine for coffee and snacks . ALSO WAS VERY QUICK AND ORGANIZED BOARDING.

On the Ferry which is very large you can buy food , coffee tea and snacks..there is also a play area for children. Lots of great views to take photos

Highly recommended for getting to the Islands from Vancouver mainland.
Dumbest employees working here. I was in a lane and the worker told me to stop and wait until he got back as they were rearranging cars. Waited while cars behind me were honking and slapping my window telling me to move out of the way. Worker never came back so I drove forward. A different worker yelled at me saying, "were you sleeping?!?, Why did it take so long for you to move. BECAUSE YOUR CO WORKER TOLD ME NOT TO MOVE.
I know some people don't like taking the ferry. I never had any problems when I went, I didn't go on a long weekend or any other busy holiday time. I made a reservation and didn't have any issues getting on the ferry I booked.
Canada ferry system is top notch. The ferry itself is very clean and gift shops like an airport. Pleasantly surprised
Staff friendly and efficient were quickly loaded, enjoyed the views enroute then quickly on our way when we landed.
A very pleasant & calm ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay (near Vancouver) to Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. The "Queen of Oak Bay" ferry we rode was clean and spacious, the employees courteous, the cafeteria had good food & drink options, and there was a ton of comfortable seating to choose from. The light-colored wood floors & wood paneling & large picture windows make the ferry feel bright & cheery. My friends & I walked to the upper "outside" deck during the trip & walked the perimeter. But even in late May, it was a bit chilly & windy, so we went back below decks, where most passengers are ensconced. I would gladly ride BC Ferries again.
As a ferry terminal area it has everything a passenger needs. The efficient bus transit from downtown Vancouver stops right outside. There are cafes close by to wait. There is a short boardwalk to view the stunning scenery so it's worth being early. Suggest you purchase tickets online but remember to get a boarding pass. Often a line up to purchase tickets. Gateway to Vancouver island and Bowen Island.
For someone with travel anxiety this place was scary to me, l didn't really know how everything works etc but the place is very well organized and they point you to the right direction. One suggestion please pay close attention where you leave your car as l had a small panic attack when l was trying to located it for 10 minutes lol. Apparently there are few levels so it is easy to mix it up.
The ride was absolutely a delight, beautiful views, l even saw some whales.
The restaurant was very well equipped, and pretty well organized.
I have nothing bad to say about the whole experience, it was great
The waiting to get on the ferry, if you don’t have a reservation, is long and tedious, but once on the ferry…a person can go up on the main deck for washrooms, food and the gift shop…. Although quite expensive…. Wonderful opportunity to take pics…the captain will announce if they see pods of orcas, etc!🖤
Takes about an hour and a half to get to Duke Point, Nanaimo!! Very pretty scenery!! Can go on the outside deck.. if isn’t too windy..
Just about lost an air pod from the wind blowing, knocking it or out my ear…. Thankfully, a girl grabbed it before it was blown off the deck, into the water!☺️
March 30/2023. Our lucky day. We managed to get on board for 13:00 sailing to Nanaimo. Come early to get aboard. Any later we would have had a 1 sailing wait. All sailings up to including to 20:00 show 60,70 full. By the sailing time those ferries are going to be full.
I am always impressed by the professionalism of the staff. They follow the safety regulations to its core, before, during and after embarkation with the ferry boat. The cafeteria has a variety of good food choices. Always on time!
