Beautiful property set off the levy of the Mississippi. Property had ancient trees and water features. Do the house tour as the better option and value to the garden walk.

We LOVED our visit to Houmas House. The gardens are magnificent! There are things to see and appreciate in every direction you look. I recommend going when you have a few hours to stroll around, take the guided tour of the house, visit the indoor museum, check out the gift shop and enjoy awesome food and drinks all while you are there. Our tour guide was INCREDIBLE! She was such a historian who patiently answered our questions and took time for our photos. The owner is an animal lover. We were able to bring Lollie, my Maltipoo, everywhere we went. This is a great tour for others traveling with dogs OR without! Just go here and have a wonderful time. I would rate higher than 5 stars if that was an option.
I was not expecting anything and I was blown away by the garden and the history of the mansion itself. I would definitely recommend it. For people who want to have a translator, I advise you to call ahead of time so that they could find a person available for you.
Loved this place. Excellent tour guide. Amazing story that explains how the plantation is still intact. Owner lives on sight and allows tour groups, which is very gracious IMO.
The tour was so interesting. I got to play the piano in the parlor for our group, at the tour guide's request, which was fun! Part of the movie Green Book was filmed here. The gardens are lovely and well designed. I went with my young adult son, who enjoyed everything as well, but especially the restaurant. Fine dining in a lovely setting with incredible food. Excellent! We also ate lunch the day before in the cafe near the museum. We live in Maryland, but we'd go back to Houmas House in a heartbeat if we're ever in that area again.

Houmas House is a beautiful plantation with a historic home and garden on site. Visiting plantations can evoke mixed emotions for me, as many of my ancestors worked the land in inhuman conditions. Thoughts of reparations and the fact that so much wealth was built off the backs of slaves are sad realities. However, I am grateful to be able to walk these grounds as a free woman, appreciating the beauty without the pain—a privilege I don't take lightly.

There are three restaurants on the property, 21 cottages, the Great River Road Museum, Turtle Bar, a gift shop, and Sweet Spot Landing, where riverboat cruises dock. You can also enjoy a southern lunch in one of the meeting spaces. Houmas House is truly a place where history and beauty converge.

Wow, what a great experience, we stayed one night, but need at least 3 to do justice in seeing... the best grounds to get lost in, breakfast was beyond words, rooms quaint, nice people working, and tour of Mansion is one of the best, if not the best we toured up the Mississippi.
Traditional plantation house with full guided tour. Great to hear about the evolved design of the house and the activities of its owners. Landscaped grounds are lovely to walk through. We understand that this house had a good relationship with its slaves and gifted them land when the regime came to an end, therefore there isn't so much on the history of slavery it's very much about the house.
Allow a couple of hours to visit. There is also a cafe. At the time of our visit it closed at 2pm, had assumed it might be open later and this is the only food outlet so keep the timings in mind.

20240329 Everyone is so nice here. The VIKING Cruise was here today, and there was a tour group. This garden is beautiful! Dogfriendly too!! There is a cost for admissions, but if you eat at the Carriage House, admission is free. We did have lunch there. The food and service were excellent! Walk across the red Bridge from the parking lot will take you closer to the Mississippi River where the VIKING Cruise Ship docked.
Houmas House Estate and Gardens was beautiful. The grounds were amazing and the restaurant buffet was delicious!!! I had no idea it was such a large garden area. Beautiful and well kept.
Our tour of Houmas Plantation was exceptional. The grounds are breathtaking and are beautifully maintained. Our tour guide was one of the best we have ever experienced. He spoke clearly and was not hurried in his approach. He was able to answer all questions asked. We highly recommend this plantation.
After moving away from Ascension Parish nearly 25 years ago, I wanted to share memories from my childhood with my husband when we returned home this Christmas. Houmas House did not disappoint!! It was better than I remembered. It is obvious the current owner Kevin has invested time and resources into the house and grounds, not to mention the addition of the amazing museum and restaurants! We have toured homes around the world and to see this jewel a few miles from my childhood home was incredible. It was also heartwarming to hear that the beautiful murals in the main foyer are the work of Craig Black, the caretaker from the
'80s that is a very accomplished artist.
Ruby was our tour guide today, very informative and personable. She gave the perfect mix of past and present to the tour.

We love this place, we’ve stayed there a few times. Love the rooms, the grounds are beautiful and the food is great ( especially the breakfast). You must do the house tour, and visit the museum, all of the staff are super nice. Last year we went around Christmas time and it was decorated beautifully. We’re going back in December this year. I believe it’s going to be a tradition.
