The Van Gogh in Drenthe exhibit (temporary) is absolutely wonderful. It's immersive and informative. A really fascinating look at his early work and development. (Dec 2023)
We visited later in the day ~4pm. Facilities (shop, lockers, etc) are also modern and attractive. We're definitely going back to check out the permanent collection.

Ontzettend leuke tentoonstelling van alles wat met Tom Poes en heet Bommel te maken heeft. Vooral het oude en oorspronkelijke materiaal is bijzonder om te zien.
Great exhibition on Van Gogh’s time spent in the probince of Drenthe.
Schönes Museum mit interessanten, wechselnden Ausstellungen vor allem im neuen Gebäudeteil. Dieses ist schon an sich interessant. Immer wieder überraschend ist die Wandelbarkeit des Raums. Daher lohnt es sich auf jeden Fall öfter zu kommen.

Een leuk museum voor Bommel en Tompoes fanaten. Mooie verzameling: hobby is uitgegroeid tot een museum, Stationsstraat te Assen. Zie ook de website.
Wer Holland bereist, freut sich u.a.auf ein historisches Kunstleben. Sind es doch die Geschichte der alten "Meister", die es geprägt haben. Im Drents Museum sucht man diese Informationen vergebens. Sehr enttäuschend. Eine Dauerausstellung ließe sich sicher auch mit Fotografien oder digital kuratieren. Weder gibt es Informationen zur Geschichte alter Meister, zum Haus, oder dem Ort Assen. Das Haus selbst ist interessant, ihm fehlt aber die Seele an Informationen aus der Vergangenheit, als verbindendes Element, um zu strahlen.

The exhibition about Pompei was beautiful and despite the crowds you could still see everything well. And you easily have 3hours tour with permanent collection and other exhibitions.

An interesting museum to have a look. The 'dying beautifully' exhibition was on when I visited. The pieces they had on Pompeii and Herculaneum was put together really tightly with nice use of space, lights and some interesting information. The permanent collection is interesting as well, though small. The more artsy collections (Rauch / self portraits) did nothing for me. The museum building itself is very beautiful and it is worth a visit if you happen to be in Assen.

Almost a thousand years ago, Cistercian nuns laid the first stone of the Drents Museum. In 1259 they received permission from the bishop of Utrecht to build a new monastery on the site where the museum now stands
The Statenzaal is without doubt the most beautiful room in the Drents Museum. The hall is lavishly decorated.
Visitors to the Drents Museum nowadays enter through a coach house from the end of the 18th century
Architect Erick van Egeraat deliberately chose the color white for the new building of the Drents Museum. White is neutral, so that the colorful collection of the museum comes into its own. White also provides an exciting contrast to the historic buildings of the museum
The floating stairs in the new building of the Drents Museum weigh 16,000 kilos each and are only attached to the upper and lower floors. The stairs were first tested in the factory in Dokkum

In the 18th century, it was a hobby for rich women to make dollhouses. A doll's house in those days was not a child's toy, but a serious matter

Fantastisch museum als je Bommelliefhebber bent. Je kan je hart ophalen aan allerlei curiosa. De directeur van het museum maakt het een heel persoonlijke ervaring.
Beautiful exhibition about Armenian history. Even though there was no queue but the museum was pretty full and I would recommend getting tickets in advance.
Leuk museum, niet heel groot maar wel veel te zien, oa de bioscoop film uit de jaren 80, erg leuk!
Superleuk! Je wordt blij van dit museum en niet in de laatste plaats door de heer van stand die hier directeur is. :-)

We specifically went for the Frida Kahlo exhibition, which, even during covid, was quite good and worth the trip. Although we had relatively little time left afterward, we did manage to see some of the regular exhibition as well. Apparently some of it was being remodeled, so we'll have to come back to see the rest. Because of covid restrictions only 12 people are allowed into the museum shop, so when you pass it and there's no queue, go in right away if you want to check it out.
Viva la Frida! - Life and art of Frida Kahlo. Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter 🧑🎨 known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of 🇲🇽 Mexico. Inspired by the country's popular culture, she employed a naïve folk 🖼 art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy.
