We loved this museum! The staff was so friendly and welcoming, the lay out wonderful and not too crowded. It's free which is great and they don't push for donations. But donate to them please! It's a must see in when in Lynchburg. History is always worth the time!

Great, free museum in historic court house, containing many artifacts depicting history of lynchburg and really does a great job of capturing the significance of this small moutain town and its role in American history, through the eras. Museum staff were extremely friendly and helpful! Must stop by if you are into history and passing through the area!

This museum is filled with outstanding exhibits which characterize each era of Lynchburg history. There is so much information to take in, well written and sequenced, and thoughtfully laid out. There are parts of each exhibit which cater to different ages, and the staff had two difficulties of scavenger hunts which helps older and younger visitors both have motivation to keep viewing exhibits and keep attention spans longer than they otherwise might endure. A must see if you are traveling outside of northern Virginia and want to learn some history of other parts of the state and how an "average" size town in America in this part of the country evolved over hundreds of years.
The lady who assisted us was great. We were first timers here and she gave us so much information about the town and places to go. We didn't see the museum in its entirety, but what we saw was great.

Staff was very welcoming and friendly. It is a free museum with interesting informational exhibits. I appreciate how the full history is displayed, showing historical truth. It is neat to learn about a city, and this museum gives a story of where Lynchburg has been and grown over the years. I will need to go back when I have time to read more.
Small, but really nicely done museum, currently featuring local athletes. A friendly and well informed docent went through the exhibit with us. This group is doing great work! We made an unexpected stop at the nearby city cemetery as recommended by the docent. We will visit some other sites she recommended soon.
Very informative! Nice ladies that gave us the history was very knowledgeable.

It was a very enjoyable experience. I was there for a festival of sorts. Beautiful grounds and gorgeous buildings. Would definitely recommend getting the tour.
It was a wonderful "Open Reception" honoring midwives from the past and present. It was especially special for me because my Great Great Grandmother Julia Whiteley Branch was honored / recognized for her contributions to Lynchburg and Midwifery.

Great day in Lynchburg, VA. Please know that the Lynchburg Museum is the Lynchburg Visitor Center, and they do help out if you have any questions. Very friendly and helpful. A Lot to do here but every place we went was by appointment tour Make sure to visit the places web site. We lucked out at Anne Spencer's house, her granddaughter was doing a tour with some others and we got there just in time.

Just got to town and wanted to see a little about the history of Lynchburg. The museum was nice and the staff was very helpful with other suggestions around town.

An old plantation home in one of a few historic districts of Lynchburg, VA.. Includes a gift shop and history section at the parking area. It can be walked but is probably best to at least drive then park as there is construction on the bridge to get there. Other than that it's a beautiful neighborhood to explore.

Kids had fun. The staff were informative and hands on. Snake feedings happen on Fridays about 1pm.
Nice welcome from the visitor center there and a Museum that gave us a great perspective of the culture in Lynchburg.

I took the first tour that was available since 2020, so they were just getting back into things. The tour took about half an hour and was informative. However, it seems like it had been updated with a political agenda. There was an out of place blurb about native peoples at the beginning and digs at slavery and peoples throughout. Please leave the political views alone and just tell me how things were. I did like that the tour person carried photos as a visual aid. One funny thing was she said some people died of consumption, saying it seems they had eaten too much. Ha, ha. Consumption was tuberculosis. I think her knowledge was shallow, but as I said, that was the first tour since the pandemic started in 2020.

A few days later, the tour’s participants were contacted and warned that the museum’s shopkeeper, who went on the tour with everyone, tested positive for COVID-19 the day after the tour. Ouch.

In all, the informational content and length are what you would want and expect in a tour, political views aside. I was disappointed this particular tour did not include going through the house.
I loved the museum especially because It only deals with the local area county African Americans and their achievements. Alot of Stars came out of Lynchburg Virginia need to visit especially those who live in Lynchburg
Interesting museum and very clean with great staff that answered all the questions.
Amazing staff! Quite an array of reptiles to see and small activities to do. Perfect for a rainy day or any day really.

Great little nature center! Easy going. There's several terrariums with live reptiles and frogs. There's a bank of drawers with all sorts of things the kids could pick up and handle and touch and hold. Bones, snake skins, epoxy-embedded insects, etc. There's a number of taxidermied animals, mostly birds. The attendant there was eager to answer questions.

Our kids had a great time. We only spent about 30 minutes there to see everything, but definitely worth doing!
I appreciated that the curators did not begin the history of the region with European settlement. I would have liked to have learned more about pre-European communities who lived in this area. Nice job with presenting diversity of perspectives in the voting exhibition - I enjoyed learning about regional supporters of the right to vote.
Very cute. A bit small, but I had a good time plinking away on the piano downstairs
Charming classic cemetery with some amazing relics and self-guided audio tour.
Great place to see some really nice History. Very friendly people at the museum very helpful.

The Lynchburg Museum is truly an exceptional local history site.

Here you can learn so much about the rich history of the city and it's people.

The exhibits were exceptional and presented diverse histories. The site was located in a beautiful, historic courthouse and will well preserved and maintained.

Staff were exception and went above and beyond to make our experience great.
The Legacy Museum is a must see for all nationalities, but Blacks for sure. My niece and I learned so much about Lynchburg and its residents by visiting the Legacy Museum. Our tour guide Phyllistine dropped knowledge about each display including the original staircase. I could not believe the Legacy was so affordable and accessible. I’ll have to return with my daughter because I couldn’t remember all the details to inform her. I’ve added the Legacy on my list to bring my visitors when they come to Lynchburg.
This museum and cemetery was breathtaking. I went in the fall, so the leaves on the ground just add to the scenery. The workers in the gift shop are very knowledgeable and friendly, and the prerecorded audio for the pest house is very interesting. I definitely recommend this if you're a history lover!
The old city Cemetery is a walk through history. There are several small museums with outdoor speakers that tell the stories of the artifacts within. The pest house reminds us that we have often quarantined in the past, for this instance, the pestilence was small pox. Beautiful walk with stately trees.

It was a nice quaint place to visit. My 3 year old loved it but my 9 year old niece said it was boring. Due to covid they had the doors locked so we had to walk around the whole building. A friendly neighbor helped us out and he knocked on a window until he got somebody's attention at which point they finally opened the main door to let us in. They didn't have too many live animals and the place is actually in the middle of a neighborhood. My 3 year old keeps asking about going to see the animals but I don't think the drive is worth it. We live about an hour away and the exhibits just aren't worth it. I probably won't be visiting again any time soon.
Thank you ! Feeling much better now! Seriously, the Pest House Museum is very interesting, and the cemetery's museum and restored railroad station are also worth a stop. Very nice.

Traveled hours, but worthwhile. Great piece of history. Informative, concise, and friendly.
Sooo much history at this place. It's quiet, a bit of walking from site to the next, but a beautiful scenic walk. Can't wait to go back when all the flowers have bloomed.

Point of Honor is a beautiful Federal home built in 1815 by Dr Cabell who was a physician to Patrick Henry. The tour was excellent and they have done a fabulous job restoring the home. Great view of the James River from the second story. The rooms are enormous with lots of large windows and intricately carved mantel pieces. The dining room and the receiving room are particularly nice.

Nice change of pace. A very small collection, but enough exhibits to make a short visit worthwhile.
It was a wonderful experience to tour the Legacy Museums newesr exhibition - The Development of an Athlete and to attend the unveiling of the historical marker for Marjorie Hill, one of the founding members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Brought all the kids here for a visit during our family reunion and it was a big hit! There are not a lot of animals but still plenty to see and do. A really good opportunity for teaching moments between parents and children.
Very nice place to immerse yourself in local history. The students did an amazing job and the guide Valerie was so sweet and informative. I loved The foamcore art, very creative and has lots of artistic potential. The clay engravings surprised me at how well different artists can coordinate because at first glance they appear to be done by the same artist. By August of 2019 they'll have a special exhibit for athletes. Be sure to call ahead and ask about hours, especially if you're driving far. Well worth your time and money

A very educational place to go and it's free. I thought the animals were adorable and the nature guide really knew alot about everything. It's a tiny room but It's great if It's a rainy day or you just want to teach your kids about nature and they are intrigued but have short attention spans. My youngest didn't want to leave!
Nicely presented aspect of local history.

Okay, so you have visited the plantations of Virginia planters, but what about the home of the tabacco shipper? Point of Honor let's you know that the shippers made a really good living, too. This home is spectacular! The guide was knowledgeable and well-spoken. A must-see in Lynchburg!

This is an awesome place to visit the staff is extremely knowledgeable. They have self guided tours daily. interactive displays and lots of local history. If your new to the area or if your just curious about Lynchburg this is the place to go. Did I mention it’s kid friendly my kids love going here and with rotating monthly exhibits there’s always something new to learn and explore.
A great place to learn some compelling history!
Gorgeous place on a beautiful campus

This was a very disappointing animal/reptile exhibit, if that's what it could be called.
I took my 16 and 17 year old there on a field trip while we were in Virginia and it was not worth the gas or time it took to get there.

I would not recommend the Nature Zone to anyone but to those with children under 5.

It literally is one room with a couple snakes, a turtle, and maybe 3 other reptiles. It had a few taxidermied animals and a few other minor things. I was extremely unimpressed.

If you love history and know more about where you live then go to Point of Honor. The staff is friendly and outgoing. My tour guide did a fantastic job at telling me all the details about Point of Honor. She also answered all my questions. They also have events here through the year.
Good stop for reminiscing of the founder. So much has changed since Jr took over.

Awesome!
The Legacy Museum is a well kept secret in Lynchburg. It preserves the history of Lynchburg and the surrounding counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell counties for African Americans. It collaborates with the Museum system in Lynchburg and other local historical sites to provide the complete picture of history in Central Virginia. It is well worth a side trip to take in the current music exhibit and future artistic exhibit coming in the summer of 2017.

I am a chaplain in the Virginia Guard and a history buff. One reviewer said this was honoring those who honored slavery. May I say that this is a Civil War museum and not a confederate. Not everyone in the South fought for slavery. I have documents in my family archive from their church in Virginia during the Civil War where the congregation adopted and signed a declaration that they did not support slavery. Be careful to judge until you know all the facts.
Hospitable ladies - very knowledgeable - lots of great brochures with an easy to read map of the city in - the center is clean and well organized with even info on other parts of VA - will be back to city for maybe an overnight as opposed to just a day trip - good hours allows you to be at other sites when they open!
An interesting look into the medical history of the civil war era. Suffers from a similar problem as the hearse house in that you can typically only view from the outside, the windows have been doubled up which makes the reflections from the outside really bad. Makes it tough to see inside. The audio guide built in to the building is great, readings direct from the doctor's notes done by some good choice actors.
Judi and Jodie are the greatest. Not only full of information with great historical details, but fun to talk with. They set us up with just the right maps, flyers, and info we needed for a brief visit. Lynchburg has done a great job of developing tourist info and promoting their historic sites. We walked two of 7 historic districts, and toured the Old City Cemetery, which has much more history than just who is buried where. So many beautiful old buildings and gorgeous vistas.

They didn't have the squirrel that they advertise. The possum was cool but other than that and the hedgehog, you can see all these live animals at the local pet store. The volunteers that were in there feeding the animals weren't very friendly, and one young boy that was with them pushed my 2 year old out of the way to get to a turtle my son was trying to look at (which made me mad of course). This is all in one small room which would be too closed-in for more than 6 or 7 people.
