I have visited all 38 of the Historic New England houses, and this guide was among the best.
Otis House is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the regular season from June through October. Tours leave on the hour between 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and last about sixty minutes.
Tickets are standard HNE home pricing at $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and students, $7 for children, and $0 for HNE members (like me!).
Parking in Boston can be crazy, but convenient metered parking is available on nearby residential side streets.

So if you're looking for a proper museum-going experience then this is not the place for you. The Museum of Bad Art is located inside the Dorchester Brewing Company and is less of a gallery and more of various terrible pieces hung up around the entire floor of the taproom (which, in my opinion, makes it more unserious, funny, and therefore, better).
I generally had a great time there looking around while getting drinks with my coworkers. The vibe is fun and vibrant. I think its a great place to check out as a conversation starter/casual activity while getting food and drinks.

The tour is pretty cool, you learn a lot about the history. You get to go onto the ship as well. Everyone who works the tour is in costume and character which is pretty cool. You also get a card with a character when the tour begins to give you a bit more history of the people involved. I did feel like it was a little pricy for the experience though.
Wonderful museum that is well kept. Had a great time learning about JFK and his contributions to the US. The only downside was the T ride down here. A bit of a trek from downtown Boston.

Historical statehouse with historical artifacts and displays from the countries found to present day on display. There is a gift shop and an educational scavenger hunt for kids or the kids at heart with a cool prize for its completion.
Tour was given by Liz this past Saturday. It was so personal and incredibly informative. The home and history are stunning and Liz’s enthusiasm really shines through. This experience was booked for me by a family member and I could have been more pleasantly impressed.
This place was AMAZING.
Not only is there a fantastic performance, you have the interactive portion where visitors get to throw tea into the harbor, there’s informative re-enactments, and ACTUAL pieces of history preserved at this amazing museum. 10/10 across the board.
Honestly the price is phenomenal for the experience.

This was so much fun. Every cast member did an incredible job. You can tell each and every one was passionate, knowledgeable, and having fun. The crowd participation parts of the tour were super fun and kept the energy up. It wasn't just lecture, it was a blast. The tour was very hands on and interactive, which made it feel very alive. I learned a lot while having fun. I would absolutely recommend it to someone who's coming to Boston for the first time. Coming off the Amtrak and walking over set the tone for our vacation. Must see
A historical location you'll visit as part of your Freedom Trail walk. Standing in front of the Old State House, the location where the Boston Massacre occurred, is a profound experience. It's typically a bit busy, as it's located near main roads and walkways, with pedestrians coming and going, but it's quite easy to approach. There's no cost to see the outside of it, and the location doesn't require waiting in line or navigating barriers. I didn't go inside, but it's worth a visit just to see the structure itself.

Recommended. One must participate to have fun, and also learn. It is a one-hour experience all together. It offers dramatization that informs about the historical event. I'd say it's a little pricey, but I was more than satisfied with the experience. I even purchased souvenirs (very unlikely from my part...lol.). Maybe if the tea tasting, something that one must do during a rainy afternoon anyway, were included it'd be a different feeling. Please take your kids and participate. My favorite part was the assembly, though others in my party didn't like it...lol. There is a moment on the ship replica (nice), some screening and museum, and finally a short movie. Well now, I'm off for a cup of tea.
What an amazing place. Worth a visit if 8n Boston but have time min 3 hours to really see the house and contents. Full of art and famous memorabilia. You need to scan a qr code for room descriptions. There is a cafe and a chill out area on ground floor. Locked lockers for small bags and coat storage.
The Old State House is another example of living history right in the middle of Boston. In all honesty, as you walk around the building today, it's almost hard to imagine those moments you've read about in history books since you were a kid taking place where you're standing. It's fascinating and a bit humbling in the moment if that makes any sense. Like a lot of great Boston landmarks, the Old State House is just right there, in between a lot of more modern buildings.

The science museum is always a great visit! I used to go as a kid, and it is still fun as an adult. The electricity show is one of my favorite parts as well as the science playground and human exhibit. There are definitely a lot of activities that are catered for younger visitors, but it is still a great time as an adult.
Wonderful museum for kids! out of all science and nature museums, this one is really something special, both in terms of the amount of activities and its quality! this museum makes everything so fun, but kids can actually learn and experience much, not just go wild. Super highly recommended!
What an absolutely amazing place! We spent hours here and still feel like we could've spent more time - we'll definitely be returning! Everything was so beautiful, unique, and spectacular! (Would definitely recommend listening to a podcast or watching a docu about the 1990 theft before you go as well)
I absolutely loved this! The actors really brought to life the history of the BTP and the surrounding events. The museum is so meticulously curated to really engage the participants. My friend and I were absolutely blown away by this and cannot recommend it highly enough to people, especially if you’re like us and only remember bits and pieces from middle school social studies about this time in history!
Absolutely beautiful place, incredible artwork, gorgeous grounds. It was very crowded the day we went, make sure that you have your tickets in advance. Plan on spending a good three hours here, there is so much to see. Wheelchair access could be difficult in some parts of the museum.
It was a wonderful interactive experience. The staff/characters were fantastic and made the experience all the better. Bringing History alive the way the Boston Tea Party Ship Museum does is a great way to learn about history. Being able to take part in the "town meeting" and "throwing tea" overboard was a real highlight. Keep up the great work team Huzzah!
No one is at the front so it’s very difficult to get there on time if you have mobility challenges or are older. Plus Boston weekend traffic is always a disaster. We paid, couldn’t get there on time and no one opened the door. Could be great but it’s a hassle.
As a history buff, I was so excited to visit. The staff were friendly. The price did not match the experience for me. The only thing I learned was that the building does not stand in the location where the event actually happened. It was nice to walk in a replica of the ship that was part of the event. In addition there is no actual tea dumping. If you do not know anything about the event then I would recommend it.
The amount of history inside the Old State House is palpable. The exhibits are informative and do a wonderful job of modernizing information to make it feel relevant to today's issues. The staff is helpful and well-educated, as well. This is well worth the price you pay, and a must-stop for those interested in the American Revolution and the days leading up to the Boston Tea Party.

My first visit to the Nichols House was for the Craftswoman and Collector tour. The staff was welcoming, the tour guide very knowledgeable and answered many questions. The home is beautiful and I was left with a good sense of the Nichols family and history of the home. Well worth a visit.

Great experience as always!! The boys had a blast and definitely left the museum empowered. I really loved the interactive exhibit that projects you on the big screen with an alternate ethnicity. Science and art remain are greatest tools for overcoming ignorance, hate and bigotry, providing the investor the greatest ROI for their time and resources.
What a fantastic unique art museum experience! I have been to a lot of art museums, but never one like this. So many amazing, wonderful pieces of art displayed up close and personal. Rare to see so many Renaissance and Italian works in one place. Kind of like if your grandma's house was full of precious priceless art instead of trinkets and pretty dishes. And a pretty garden in the center of it all! Very unique experience, well worth the $20 entrance fee. Highly recommend!
Definitely an older museum and one geared towards teaching kids. With that said, our group of 3 adults had a great time and were thoroughly entertained. Would absolutely come back if I had nieces or nephews interested in science.
It’s been 20 years since I was last here and it was still pretty neat! I do think a majority of the museum is more catered towards younger kids, but my husband and I still enjoyed our day. The Electricity Theater was super neat! We saw a 4D show as well which we enjoyed. I wish we had more time to explore. There really is a lot to see and I would recommend it for sure!
Very interesting. We had an almost private tour. The guide was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and eager to enlighten us with details of life at the end of the 19th century.
Beautiful house with a lot of interesting history and things to see! I've lived in and around Boston for over a decade now, this was the first I had heard of this museum and I'm so glad I got to see it. Most of the original house was left untouched, 80% from what I recall, it's a must-see. The tour was great and thorough. Keep an eye open for interesting letters, tools/knicknacks, and artwork!
Sehr schönes, historisches Gebäude. Der geschichtsträchtige Balkon ist gut zu erkennen. Insbesondere mit dem modernen Hochhäusern im Hintergrund wirkt das Gebäude beeindruckend. Durch dieses und weitere Gebäude mit Backsteinen hat Boston ein einzigartiges Flair. Die Abwechslung zwischen modernen Hochhäusern mit glasfronten und historischen Gebäuden aus Backsteinen ist unglaublich.

It is a great activity to do when in Boston. Not only was this educational, but also entertaining. We were able to get tickets right before the next attraction took place. I liked that this was available as I only learned about this through history books when younger. It's fun to actually be here first hand to experience it in person. The staff were in character for the entire attraction.
Before arriving in Boston for business, I purchased a GoCity all-inclusive pass that included the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Saying this was one of the most unique and pleasant art museums I’ve been too would be an understatement.
The museum structure itself as I understand was Gardner’s home and was built to best house her extensive collection of art from around the world and throughout history. There was a massive courtyard of curated flora and fauna and every room throughout the museum had an incredibly unique styling and feel.
You’ll see everything from renaissance-era Italian sculpture and canvas to artifacts and manuscripts and even one of Rembrandt’s self portraits! Definitely recommend any art lovers to visit and set aside at least 2 hours to casually walk the museum. If you’re in the city during the summer, it’s also a great break from the heat. The stone mansion stays nice and cool throughout the day.

We had a tour that ended up being just the two of us. Our guide was knowledgeable and helped with questions about the area. Made a stop to get out of the rain, but it was worth it.
We love Museum of Science! Many great exhibitions and shows! Many games for children! We loved exploring about ice and mazes.

One of the most phenomenal places I have ever visited! The building and gardens alone are beautiful, but the addition of the art just takes it to a whole new level. To see the art that’s there as well as the frames with the missing pieces of art is moving. The entire collection is second to none. Take the time out of your trip to Boston and check out this museum, you will not be disappointed.

I liked the exhibit about the time around the Boston Tea Party. To paint the picture of the why and how.
But to compare the Tea Party with the events of January 6th 2021 is veeeery tricky. That needs a lot more explanation. Not every riot is a freedom fight…..imho.

This Victorian townhouse museum is an absolute hidden gem and was my favorite stop on my Bookish explorations of Boston. It’s where they filmed parts of Little Women, and as a Harry Potter fan, I found it to be a perfect dupe for Grimmauld Place! Curated and donated to the public by a gay author, the house is a slice of queer history that houses three generations of Gibson family members and dozens of servants between 1859 and 1954. The Gibson House Museum is open to the public year-round by guided tour. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for children.
I received a free invitation to attend a tour here and was pleasantly surprised by the talk. July 2023 was the first time I have ever been inside the Old State House. There were several school tour groups on the first floor, making this house crowded. No elevators that I could find.
Not too crowded, easy to follow.
It has only one floor to explore. Mostly contain movies, videos, and voice record. Not much items to see compare to other presidential library. The upset point is that they go directly through presidency but don’t tell the story of JFK when he was a senator or his accomplishment that time. By the way, the library is clean. There are many restrooms. Not much souvenir sell in this place.

Awesome museum right above the metro entrance. It was not stroller friendly, but it was a pretty neat look into history. Nice gift shop too. When you buy a ticket here you get a ticket to see Old South Church. Save room for both so it doesn't go to waste.

The first stop is a movie (don't miss the exhibits outside while you wait to enter) which is about 20 minutes long and takes you up to the Democratic nomination. From there, you head into the main exhibits chronologically. Don't miss the movie on the Cuban Missile Crisis- it's really interesting and hearing the actual voice recordings and discussions is very thought-provoking. There's sections on Jackie and RFK too- one of the most interesting is Jackie's work on preservation in the White House! From artifacts to videos to interactive screens, there's something for everyone and the rooms are big so do absorb the numbers of visitors well too.

It was a nice museum, it didn't focus at all on his death or his own family with Jackie. It felt very sterile. Maybe that is how they wanted it but other presidential museums felt more personal.
The site of the Boston massacre is right outside this historic state house! The building is a museum now, and has a plethora of colonial era artifacts: highlight being some tea. Although the state house is definitely a propaganda machine (not fully expression the point of views of both sides, the state house is still very enjoyable.
Funnily enough, a poll showed most people disagreed with the acts of the Boston Tea Party...I was not expecting that.

The Library is very informative and goes over the key successes of the Kennedy administration. The museum is fairly non partisan and has many well-made informative videos that educate you on the time period. One of the best parts of the museum is a showcase of artifacts at the museum. The artifact is displayed in a case, given a description, and and image shows the artifact in use during some sort of ceremony.

Great Experience!! Our tour guide Micheal did a fantastic job and knew answers to all questions. The house itself is much larger than you would expect and it is preserved wonderfully. Highly recommend checking this place out!
We had a wonderful tour. The house was interesting and our guide was personable and knowledgeable. I’m only leaving off a star because it would be difficult if not impossible for folks with disabilities and I advise not going in high summer, though they do their best to keep you cool with fans. Highly recommend though!
Definitely my favorite house tour so far. I love Historic New England and their guides, but I was the only one at this tour (on a weekend too!) so I had the whole place to myself! I felt so lucky. Learned a lot about the West End as well. Got some great recommendations for visiting Salem, MA, as well. Can't recommend enough!
A must visit for anyone taking a trip to Boston. Stunning piece of history presented in an amazing way. The show right in the beginning sets the tone of the journey. The collection are presented in a way that is all you have to do is to follow the corridor exiting the movie hall. Amazing. The area surrounding the library and museum is even better. There are small pier, some really nice grassy picnic area, walk along the harbor. This place will never bore. Awesome 👌
Fascinating journey through JFK's life and political career, with very informative and engaging exhibits and videos. The building itself is a marvel -- I could've simply stayed in the breathtaking atrium for the whole time and be satisfied. Surrounding grounds also have beautiful and relaxing views of the harbor. Staff was very friendly, and the small cafe had very reasonably priced sandwiches and salads that were quite good.
The main drawback is getting here, especially if you're staying in downtown Boston or Cambridge and hope to use public transit. You have to take the Red Line to the JFK stop (which is a long T ride from Harvard Square), then switch to a free bus shuttle. We ended up using Uber instead.

Great tour with a knowledgeable and entertaining guide. Lots of interesting historical details and objects. Would definitely recommend!
This was one of my favourite house tours I've been on! The guide was great with lots of anecdotes and passion for the property. What was really interesting was that it covered all the different eras in depth throughout the property and it was so interesting to hear! There's a small but interesting gift shop and restroom facilities too.
Couple of notes- my tour ended up being around 75 minutes (I think the website says 45/50 so just bear in mind when making other arrangements. Their card machine wasn't working when I visited so if you do like a gift shop, take some cash just in case!

This is an uproariously funny museum thanks to both the unique art collection and the excellent write-ups about each piece. We had a fabulous time. The museum was formerly in Somerville and is now in a brewery in south Boston. The food and people in the brewery were great also.
Inside the Dorchester Brewing Company. It was very interesting seeing the artwork hanging around, even upstairs leading to the rooftop seating. It's free to go in and look. After your done, you can get something to eat at M&M BBQ right inside the place. Or grab a beer, right from the Dorchester Brewing Company bar. I did both. I'm not a beer drinking girl, but the Bartender helped me by offering a fruity beer. He gave me a sample, and it was very good. So I made it a slushy by adding the lemonade they had in the slush machine to the fruity beer. I was impressed!
House museum it was fairly good I just wish there was more audio for people who don't have the ability to read through everything. In the Old South Church they had audio recordings you could download and it was fantastic. I would love to have something like that here.
Tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. It is a beautiful house. It does not take long, and it is low-budget. They have 3 different tours with different focus (I think). I am already planning to be back for a different tour.
Beautiful architecture and magnificent history with this building. To see the building in its size compared to the rest of the city that has grown around it is truly awe inspiring. And to be standing 3 ft away from where the Declaration of Independence was read for the first time ever?...jaw dropping!!!!

We had a small group of three and our tour lasted around 25 minutes excluding time in the shop! The guide was very friendly and allowed lots of opportunities for questions. It was quite a brief tour that gave you an overview of the family who owned the property and also the area and architecture but if you're looking for an in-depth house tour this one may not be quite what you're after.
I'd recommend checking opening and tour times as they are quite limited. There's also a small shop downstairs too with postcards and souvenirs!

I'm a told this is where the permanent installation of the MOBA artwork will be. About 2 dozen pieces on display at the brewery. Very interesting pieces with their own charm. Overall a pleasant experience and definitely recommended.

I loved it. There's like 2 and 1/2 bars in there? I think the point is to get you numb enough to enjoy the bad art? Have you ever known someone who liked really cheesy horror movies? Or just movies that were so bad they were kinda funny? Well that's how this museum is. The descriptions are really what makes it; they're so funny. This photo was just 1 of my favs!
Fabulous home and history. The guide was VERY knowledgeable and very nice. The decor was beautiful. It was nice to see the insides of a historic Beacon Hill home.
Visited on Saturday 2/12/22 and it was a wonderful experience. I love all the artifacts and the online explanation for it. Yes there are guards in every room that keep an eye on everyone which can make it a bit awkward but given the history of the museum and only a few items being in glass cases it’s to be expected. Some of them were actually very friendly and gave more insight then what was listed online. That being said each room is unique and truly transports you to that era. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The only reason I give this a four is because of the time I went. I went midday and it was very crowded which caused me to rush the experience a bit. I would recommend going first thing upon opening also order your tickets in advance!

A gem hidden in plain sight! Passed by here many time not knowing it was a historic place/museum. An 18th century house, it is one of 37 locations owned and ran by Historic New England. Greatly enjoyed the tour, guide was most knowledgeable. Quality of the restoration is amazing!
Such a great gem to have in the city. Worth a visit and learn more about the real West End.
