Fantastic little museum! We got a discounted ticket entry on Groupon. We spent a very enjoyable few hours there.
I went on a Friday evening when it’s free from 4 to 8 PM. I just happen to be there that time. I saw a great temporary exhibit by a Native American basket weaver. There is some other very nice art, and the building is great and very accessible for viewing art. There is also a good children’s book selection and a nice gift shop.
Wow. What a great local museum. We especially enjoyed the exhibit on basket weaving and the second floor dedicated to the local indigenous land and its relationship to art. They have a few jewelry pieces and a small collection of decorative glass. The third floor modern collection was awesome. I especially loved the animal collection that leads to the fourth floor. Highly recommend and the museum experts are great!
was very fun, but my boyfriend made a joke about one of the pieces being a tax write off and one of the nearby workers immediately started following us the entire time. I think he was trying to find a way to get us kicked out?? lol. other than that everything was great
The baskets exhibit was wonderful and I enjoyed some of the paintings. The staff are incredibly friendly with one exception.

One curator kept staring me down. It was really uncomfortable, that’s why four out of five stars.

The canoe on the second floor and the glass bowls (the blue one with the person) were probably my favorite two things in the museum. The apples on the way to the cafe are pretty cool too.
Very nice musem. A little bit of everything. I spotted one pice of Picasso. Some local artist, too. Fantastic person working at the museum, who was super helpful and engaging in the conversation.

Two thumbs up!👍👍You are going to absolutely love OMSI. Our favorite visits so far have been Marvel Superhero’s, Dinosaurs Revealed and the submarine tour❤️. Definitely worth getting a membership to save money. Or if you’re just in town for a short trip it’s worth taking your kiddos for a visit. Check the website for the latest exhibits and be prepared to go and have a great time. Helpful tips: Extra fee for parking, tickets can be purchased in advance online and membership available. They also have a Cafe, movie theater and gift shop available.

Check out our video on YouTube to see our full experience at the Marvel Superheroes exhibit. Subscribe to our channel to see more cool videos for kid friendly things to do in Oregon. Just copy and paste the link below into your browser👇👍❤️.

It is one the best museums in Oregon. It was fun to discover all the exhibitions and kids' playgrounds. There are some kid's puzzles that I could not solve as an adulte but I enjoyed them overall. I would love to be back soon

I visited this museum last year to see the Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes exhibit. I am a huge comic book geek, particularly Marvel comics, so this was so much fun to walk around and look at this exhibit. The displays were great and there was a lot of information to read on about the comic book art. I would love to visit this museum again one day to see other exhibits. I highly recommend visiting here whether you are a local or a tourist.

This was our first time at OMSI, but it won't be our last. The exhibits were varied and incredibly well done. Guaranteed to provide a great experience for everyone. The facility is very clean. All staff members are very helpful and willing to answer any questions. I understand the exhibits change so I look forward to seeing what is in store for us on our next Portland trip. Highly recommend!

We had a wonderful time visiting on Indigenous Peoples' Day. Really appreciated the emphasis on Native and Black voices and art
This museum was a delight to visit! We had middling expectations and were blown away. It had a fantastic collection of compelling art. It was well designed and well laid out. It had helpful and personable staff. I cannot recommend this enough. My friend calls it fantastic and that it has zero problems. Also! They're working very hard to make it physically accessible. There's frequent seating as well as portable stools and seats. It has an elevator and a wheelchair lift for smaller stairs.

We didn’t have enough time to see everything, most of our time was spent at the Orcas special exhibit and the Empirical Theater. The Orcas exhibit was very interesting and had depth of information. I imagine if the museum is very busy, you might not get to interact as much as we were able to do. Really enjoyed this fantastic exhibit, watching the dive patterns on a specific whale, reading about the family system and life cycle for example. The Natural science area does seem much more geared towards hands on for children, although the 360 globe had a number of different cycles of information, temperature changes through the year and migration patterns of sea turtles to name two.

We didn’t get a chance to see much more, as we paid to see a movie in the Empirical Theater. We watched The Arctic: Our Last Great Wilderness. Beautiful photography and videography, so much information about the Arctic animals. The theater has fantastic view and audio. It was an extra cost, but seemed well worth it for the movie. Would absolutely go back for future exhibits and movies. Not just for kids.

This museum has lots of fun games for kids (which I find very interesting and fun to try). There was an exhibit of babies from 1-32 weeks in the mother’s womb that was spectacular and informative.
Highly recommended place to visit in Portland!

It was very fun to go in but just I wish there was a little more to do with just the basic ticket, I feel like if I was able to go to the submarine or go outside (it was a rainy day) it would’ve been better. Overall fun and even better if you have kids
For the price we expected it to be much bigger, I was surprised how small it was unless we missed half the museum.

It’s modern and clean and elevators to help you access other floors. But not the best museum I’ve been too, felt like they could do alot more with the space.

But it’s nice to spend 45-60 mins in
The Art Museum of Portland, Maine was a great experience in local and international art.

There were many Winslow Homer originals on display. There were many Winslow Homer originals on display. He was an American painter, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the best American painters of the 19th century.

I was taken by the mastery of the paintings throughout my tour, and I snapped some close-ups to show the details.

There are also fantastic sculptures, models, and other various forms of art exhibited in different rooms.

If you are looking for a break, there is a café at the basement level that sells adult beverages and snacks with some limited seating.

If you are in Portland, ME and love art, make sure to put the Portland Museum of art on your itinerary.

Very awesome spot for kids of all ages, could easily spend many hours here or repeated visits, barring my own energy. Has a great atmosphere where it feels safe for the kids to do whatever they please in the given room or space.

Pretty fun exhibits. Loved the puzzles part, and sadly one of two of them had missing pieces. Googled for an answer to the rope with rings, but all good.

And the submarine tour was nice! Simple walk through but with explanations from the staff with less history.

The Orca exhibition was pretty well crafted too, and the foetal exhibits were amazing.
Nice little art museum. Most of the work from artist who live/d in Maine. I visited mainly to see the Hommer works but enjoyed the modern video installation even more, how beautiful and meaningful. In the sculpture garden my favorite was a person made with cage and rocks, just brought a feeling of a person being held down by the weight of the world we are in.
This museum happened to be free on the rainy Saturday we went in June. I really loved the powerful way the art, crafts & decorative objects were juxtaposed in each room of the permanent collection (Passages in Americn Art). The Elizabeth Columbo exhibition, Mythologies, was also wonderful!

This museum's Free Friday is the best venue around. Admittance is free in the afternoon for everyone. My girlfriend and I happened to visit while grad students from Julliard were giving a classical music presentation and performance. The music contributed greatly to the atmosphere of the museum. For this reason, I give the museum 5 stars.

As for the museum as a whole: everyone has different tastes in art, so I won't judge the museum purely on my own artistic preference. The museum features a wide variety of mediums and styles; there were plenty of pictures, abstract art, and impressionist/realist paintings--our favorites--situated in logical traffic lanes for easy viewing. Pleased to see some Homer, Degas, and Whistler in little old Portland, Maine. It was clean and well maintained. Great date night.

Not the biggest fan of the OMSI but the marvel exhibit was worth seeing and planetarium shows are reasonably priced and worth it. It would be a much better experience if OMSI would offer tickets by time to stagger the crowds. It is always too busy whenever we go and the ticketing area is right in the middle which creates chaos.

Super fun place for kids! Very informational and easy to understand exhibits for children. I went here as a solo adult and honestly there wasn't a lot geared for adults unless the special exhibit is something you're interested in. There is also a planetarium that shows a few different programs. Not sure I would come back here again to be honest. It was smaller than I expected and many of the exhibits that weren't 100% kid-focused were not very detailed or extensive.
