First time seeing a play there. Intimate setting made me feel like I was part of the scenes and I was impressed by the acting; felt immersed into the story. Will visit again.
Full disclosure, I'm in one of their plays! It's a community theater and it radiates with love. Come check it out.
We saw a great show at this charming little theater. Very comfortable. Easy parking.
My husband and I went today for the first time. The place was really warm, friendly, inviting, and clean. We saw MISERY and for Community Theater it was quite enjoyable. The lead man (who played James Caan) was excellent/flawless. The lead woman who played Kathy Bates, stumbled over her words quite a few times, but she was still very good. We will return to try a musical next.
The shows at the Hippodrome are awesome and tonight I saw the Christmas Carole, wonderful show. This is the first time however I have encountered two unfriendly staff/volunteers that took our tickets. We arrived at 2 minutes till 4 and a group of folks with paper (versus electronic) tickets who arrived after us were seated before us and then we couldn’t sit together, 4 of us, the guy was rude and the young lady was spacey. Neither of them acted like they’d ever seen an electronic ticket before. I sincerely hope that my next visit to see a play there, those 2 aren’t working! It’s not a good impression for people who have never been to the Hippodrome before.
A very nice theatre with great productions
Went to see the Addams Family Musical there last night. The entire cast was amazing! Great job, everyone, and the theater itself was beautiful! It was my first time coming to see anything there.
Saw the Christmas Carol yesterday and the performance was outstanding. The cast phenomenal even with a last minute performer. Enjoyed the show .
The Ultimate X-Mas Show....was very funny. It's definitely different and not everyone as some people left after intermission. But we found it innovative, clever and entertaining. You should definitely check it out. Enjoy!
I've seen several live theater productions here. The actors are wonderful. I especially enjoy the comedies because they make me laugh and laugh. They also have a movie theater and an art gallery. It's an old historic building with impressive architecture. I'll go again for sure.
Attended the preview of Sweeney Todd last night. It was amazing! The space itself was small and intimate and all around it was a wonderful night. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

We went to see the play "The Crucible". I was very impressed with the acting quality. It was better frankly than some shows we have seen on TV. It is a small intimate theater so you are close to the stage. I sat in the 1st row and then moved to the 4th row at the intermission. I preferred the 4th row view of the stage.

Small intimate theater with a fabulous production of No Exit. It felt like we were almost part of the show. Drinks & snacks by donation. Plenty of parking shared with other retail.
Another great performance--"No Exit." Intimate setting, audience right up against the stage, very engaging, and the acting quite admirable. Worth every penny.
Great play! We went to matinee on Sunday. Intimate black box theater with comfy seats. AC worked well. Incredible local talent. Very professionally run theater. Our first visit to their new location. We are going see many of their productions this season. You will enjoy!
Very nice theater! Lots of seating for a small community theater and they were comfortable. We saw an intimate play with no set and two actors. Probably hottest day of the year and we were nice and cool. So glad this is available for the talented people in Gainesville! We will go again!
We saw the Producers last year and Kinky Boots last Saturday. Both performances were stellar! Amazing local talent! Comfortable, professional venue! Cool, clean, nice seating, affordable tickets - what's not to like? No compromise quality entertainment! Great asset for Gainesville community!!
Was I actually transported to NYC, watching a Broadway musical?! One might think so, as the plays and musical productions created here in the Van York Theater, more commonly known as The Gainesville Community Playhouse, are that professional and well done. Okay, so, back to reality…I was in Gainesville, FL, happily front row center, enjoying ‘Kinky Boots’. I bought my tickets in the car immediately after leaving ‘Clue’, it was that good, awesome, super (insert infinite superlatives here)!
I moved here last year from Orlando, where I regularly attended shows, and hands down I NEVER saw shows this good or got a front row ticket for $19. The theater is comfortable and fairly intimate, reinforcing the happy fact that you’re not crawling over 30 people to jam yourself into a tiny seat. So, I know you’re asking yourself, “Yes, but did you like the Vam York?” 😆
Bottom line? Yes. YeS, YES!

Wowza!! We went last night (7/27) and saw KINKY BOOTS. This was our first show and it won’t be our last. The show had so many moving parts—singing, dancing, and a story line that is both meaningful and funny. Lots of love shown from the staff AND all actors. One word….Fabulous.
We have loved this experience. These ladies are super and workxso well with children of all ages. The new venue will be feeling like home before you know it.
I saw the current production, KINKY BOOTS, last evening, and it was excellent! The acting, the singing, the dancing, the costumes, the set...all were simply wonderful! It was the best theater I've experienced in quite some time. I urge you to see it.
Ushers not good giving directions to your seat. Seats are small for average person. My arms and hands fell asleep. We know it's a small old historical build but can use some modern on seating. Building has old architecture design. Good place for plays and discovery of history. Good they help young actors.
Wow I have been to two shows now and have thoroughly enjoyed them both. But tonight was all about the Honkey Tonkin Laundry 🧺. These women can sing 🎤 and I have to be honest I was smitten by the blonde bombshell who’s voice and expressive nature made her a natural. She was perfect for the part and had perfect comedic timing. Easy on the eyes for sure 😉

Beautiful little theater in downtown Gainesville. Small and intimate, these are awesome shows to see. Highly recommended. It's great to see local productions back in action, and this theater is just the ticket we needed. Thank you ART!
Not sure if there are two names to this building. Excellent layout lighting and smoke effects. Saw Oliver was a great show. This place takes considerable measures during covid to give mask and require them throughout the show
Perfect place for Christmas Cheer. Beautifully decorated and wonderful holiday cheer. A must do if you love Gainesville.
The musical Blues in the Night was a stupendous success! I was transported to the old rhythm of a woman's heat, passion and sorrow that was reminiscent of Porgy and Bess or a late night cooling in a shack with some moonshine in the Florida Everglades. This night was MA Rainey, Old Mama Bessie and funky down Billie Holiday. Their voices were rich with pain and pleasure. The crooners took you on a Buggy Ride of laughs, passionate thrills, and vintage charm that felt almost sacred. Thank you for this experience Ms. Rhonda and Ms. Angela. From the stellar blues musicians to the perfect dance sequences, acting and powerhouse vocalists. To me this performance should be neck and neck with the best of Broadway. Just...dazzling!
This was a delightful, surprise find. This theater is very quaint but very small with limited seating. However, we were surprised to find that they served wine and beer ($5 piece) with a sample of free champagne. The play itself (I love you because...) Was cute and well done with only six actors. We would go back again.

A nice little theater perfect for an intimate performance. We saw Hamlet by Actors from the London Stage and there wasn't a bad seat in the house. My one complaint is that the seats are extremely uncomfortable. There's no leg room which causes your legs and feet to start falling asleep, and the seats are not cushy or soft so your back is killing you by the end of a three hour play.
This theatre is nicely set up for a plays or concerts. The acoustic is excellent. Seating is great to see the entire play. The high back chairs are comfortable.
