Reviews

Elizabetta gave us an excellent tour earlier today. This museum is one of the real gems in all of Italy, and actually all of Europe. To see how paper was made for centuries , not only at the actual historic site but with the actual machines that were used, and that you can actually see them running now using power from the water mill is incredible. 10/10 experience. THIS PLACE IS NOT TO BE MISSED, and it truly should be declared a World Heritage Site.

We came to visit the Paper Museum in the off-season and everyone in our group of 10 loved it! We had a private tour, saw a few of the machines at work and even made paper! My kids (and husband) tried their hand at some old techniques and our guide was wonderful, knowledgeable and fun. I would recommend this for adults and kids alike.

Amazing place to visit for both children and grown ups. All machines are still working and the guide in the museum switches them on and demonstrates the paper making process in front of you. The whole tour is around 25 minutes and children can participate in paper making process. The tour was extremely interesting and educational. The guide Maddelena was outstanding, very interactive and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
After leaving the review, we came across other people’s posts that the tab with white water, where children submerge the wooden frame, contains urine. The guide mentioned that urine was used to bleach the paper in the past, but she never mentioned what it was replaced with. The owner of museum, please could you clarify what is in this water exactly.

Wonderful museum. Oldest operating paper mill in Europe. Really cool that they can still make paper like how they did hundreds of years ago. Really neat way to learn about the history of the Amalfi Republic, and great thing to do to get away from the tourist crowds. A authentic way to experience the Amalfi coast besides just the scenery. Great thing to do on a rainy day. You can buy some of the paper too!

📝A must see when you’re in Amalfi! The history is truly remarkable. Im sure others overlook the uniqueness of this experience. A small museum but worldly history with machinery that still operates today!! Its really incredible to experience and learn about the past and art of making paper during the 13th century
A time machine for visitors to which you can relive ancient productions and experience them with their own hands.
Tour is in english- friendly and educational staff. Can be done in 30 minutes. Great gift shop as well. Don’t over look this gem!

We are paper people so this is a very cool place to see how paper was made in the 16th and 18th century. 5euro admission and they give you a 20 min tour of the still functional, water driven machines used to make paper in the old days. Great place to buy a thoughtful gift in the shop!

Great little museum, really interesting and just a short walk away from the busy crowds in the main town. Our guide was great and our children got the chance to make paper.

Wow what a cool unexpected gem! We spent ~45 minutes here and it was well worth it to see tradition paper making machines in action! Definitely take the guided tour- self guided does not give you quite as much content. Worth a stop!!

Very interesting little museum. Just 3 Euros to enter and a fabulous quick guide provided by staff verbally. Pick up the printed booklet at the desk to read more about the commercial maritime history of Amalfi and it's critical importance to the development of capitalism.

A beautiful town by the coast, wonderful place to visit.
Very organized surroundings and helpful locals. Tidy place which feels safe throughout the day and night.
Definite recommendation to others.

4pm and already closed. Rude and lazy workers.

The highlight of the trip! The guy at the front, Ventura, was the most animated and enthusiastic person. We stood there for 45 minutes talking with him asking questions and he was insanely knowledgeable. The exhibits themselves aren’t blow away special, but chatting with Ventura was the best part

So beautiful, relaxing, peaceful and a lovely place to travel. Offers a wider range of shops and activities than you can want. So many stunning places across the coastline, certainly worth a visit.

Looks even better in person. Drove from Rome just to be here for half a day. Not even complaining. Scenic drive. Great food. Lemon sorbet all over. Romantic vibes throughout and very safe.

Cool spot to see how paper was made using water powered equipment underground. Tour guide was very friendly and her explanations and demonstrations were very good. Made my own sheet of paper!

Such a great little town... get the real lemon filled with lemon sorbet. See photos for the best spot!!! Definitely walk into the church and while you're up there, as you exit, before you go down the stairs again.. head to the right and check out the museum. It's a great value for 4 euros.

A bit disappointed since everyone says it's such a beautiful coast. But in my opinion heavily overhyped. Getting there can turn out to be difficult, I suggest to go with the ferry. The beach is mid and I personally liked other places more. Capri for example was definitely more beautiful.

Amidst the cobblestone streets of Amalfi, where history's whispers mingle with the sea's salt-kissed breath, stands the Antico Arsenale—an architectural marvel that evokes the grandeur of a seafaring legacy. As we delve into this maritime treasure, let us explore its intricate details, where the technical and the poetic converge in an embrace that resonates with the heartbeat of Amalfi's soul.
Gateway to the Sea:
The entrance to the Antico Arsenale is a portal to a world where ships once danced upon the waves, and the dreams of sailors set sail with the wind. Its stone archway, weathered by centuries of maritime adventure, stands as a silent sentinel, welcoming those who venture into its depths.
Architectural Grandeur:
Within the arsenal's cavernous chamber, architectural precision meets the graceful sweep of the sea. Its towering stone columns, like ancient trees of the forest, reach for the heavens. Their intricately carved capitals, adorned with maritime motifs, tell tales of ships that once called this place home.
Ships in the Making:
The heart of the arsenal is the shipyard, where wooden skeletons took shape. Skilled artisans once toiled in these sacred spaces, their hands coaxing vessels from timber and dreams. The technical mastery of shipbuilding became an art, and each keel, plank, and spar became a symphony of craftsmanship.
Anchored Echoes:
In the dim light of the arsenal, the tools of the trade still rest, as if poised to resume their work. Saws, adzes, and mallets, now silent, bear witness to the labor and craftsmanship that once echoed within these stone walls. Each tool is a silent tribute to the hands that shaped history.
Maritime Icons:
Adorning the walls are maritime icons—anchors, ship wheels, and navigational instruments. These artifacts, like relics from a bygone era, celebrate the technical precision of navigation, a lifeline for the sailors who braved the tempestuous waters of the Mediterranean.
The Call of the Sea:
At the waterfront, where ships once launched into the embrace of the sea, the call of the waves remains a timeless siren song. The lapping waters, their rhythms unchanged by time, seem to whisper tales of adventure, courage, and the boundless horizon.
Legacy and Reverie:
In the Antico Arsenale, the technical mastery of shipbuilding becomes a tribute to the poetic soul of a seafaring town. It is not just a building; it is a testament to the courage and ambition of generations who dared to explore the boundless expanse of the sea. It is a reminder that, even in the realm of technicality, the human spirit seeks to capture the poetry of the waves and the beauty of the horizon.
As you stand within the hallowed halls of the Antico Arsenale, you become part of a timeless narrative—a story of dreams set sail, of challenges embraced, and of the enduring connection between Amalfi and the sea. It is a place where the technical and the poetic become one, where the past lives on in the whispers of the waves, and where the legacy of the maritime soul continues to shape the town's destiny.

I liked it. It's quite interesting to see the origins of the paper industry that the wealth of these little towns were founded on. Dating back to the 13th Century the museum has working examples of the age of the early paper presses. Then, it took a whole day to make quality paper by hand and heavy hammers driven by water mills. The much later ones, still powered by the weight of water, only ceased working in the last 60 years or so. These machines took less than an hour to press an entire roll of wrapping paper.
You are each invited to stir a vat containing a soup of cotton fibres which you place a wooden frame of fine flat copper to gently collect and film of 'paper'. Rolled onto a bed of woollen cloth this is then air dried to create a paper good enough to sell in the shop.

Definitely a great spot to visit. You’ll get a nice view of the coast , nice beaches ( wear water shoes ), and delicious food ( you’ll enjoy it even more if you’re a seafood enthousiaste, freshest seafood I’ve had 2nd to Japan )
Only thing to watch out is if you get a villa/hotel on top of the coast is the stairs. So bring a comfortable pair of shoes.

Fantastic visit… If it’s on your ‘Bucket List’,… GO - it’s worth the 2 hour Ferry from Sorrento.
Only caution - if extreme heat and/or massive clouds aren’t your thing - book a short trip… 2-3 hours is perfect to window shop, explore and grab a bite to eat!

It was a very nice experience.

Probably one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The sites are stunnig whichever direction you look from. The blend of nature and men made architecture makes this Cost seem almost unreal. The food, the attractions to visit, the Spiaggias...the list is endless.

Place of great beauty. Place of a hilly terrain, and all the constructions are in a staggered manner. Very exotic. Incredible night and day views. Good food.

Look back in time hundreds of years to see how paper came to life in the Amalfi area. And then get the opportunity to roll and make your own paper! All this with a guided tour for around 10 euro. English speaking guides.

The views of this coast are dreamlike and I extended my stay so I could do some hikes and visit as much as possible. It was so busy and crowded buses galore. I would recommend visiting after the summer crowds leave.

Lovely area! Warm and friendly people. Wonderful shops. Great restaurants and food. Italian terrone candy and lemon 🍋 size of your head. Wonderful desserts too. Highly recommend if you go to Rome take the train to coast and then a boat to area you need. Great memories

Absolute amazing place to visit.
With a disabled son in buggy it was a bit of a work out, as expected plenty of hills and sometimes a few steps to traverse, along with some uneven cobbled paths.
The scenery was beautiful in almost every direction.
Plenty of places to eat, booking is recommended in the more popular restaurants. Shops are plentiful and most open late into the evening.
Visited end of July weather was hot with only a few drops of rain on evening.
If walking and using Google maps allow extra time, as with the above mentioned hills and heat a slower pace is needed. Also be mindful as most directions follow the roads and they don't always have paths.
We stayed at Ravello which was beautiful.

The place is wonderful and has a great culture and infrastructure. You can easily get there by taking a ferry. The food is also amazing. There are many hidden gems to explore between the houses, hills, and main churches. Additionally, all the restaurants in Limoncello are amazing.

Was very cool to see how paper was made in the 1200s. The tour was informative and the demonstrations extremely interesting. Would highly recommend visiting. One of my favorite things I did in Amalfi!

Very touristic but still beautiful. Should be visited once - however, if you enjoy relaxing holidays: there are so many nice places to go to in Italy :)

This was by far my most enjoyed experience at a museum ever! The guide was incredible and she explained everything in both English and Italian. Keep her there forever, she was awesome!!!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a charming museum that showcases the art of quality paper production spanning centuries. By chance, my partner and I discovered this hidden gem and were captivated by the process of creating Amalfi paper. As a graphic designer, my partner really enjoyed learning about each step involved. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We couldn't resist bringing home a few treasures from the gift shop. If you are interested in history, craftsmanship, and a unique learning opportunity, I highly recommend paying a visit to this museum!

A hidden gem and definitely one of our favorite experiences in Amalfi. Great alternate excursion for when the weather keeps you off the beaches and boats. The museum is about a 15-minute walk up the main street of Amalfi town just on the left, a few steps after another paper craft store. We booked the private tour (€15/person) which allowed our whole party to participate in some paper making. We were also all gifted some handmade paper at the end. Elio, the museum manager and our guide, was so informative and also advised us when it was best to take photos and videos throughout the tour. The gift shop was amazing as well.
Fun fact: this is the oldest active paper making mill in all of Europe, dating back to the 13th century.

A free museum to visit directly across from the bus stop of Amalfi! Don’t miss this chance to learn about the history of Amalfi and get a chance to escape the crowded streets and beaches!

This is a museum near the duomo. This museum is part of the complex, there is alwas an exibition inside. If you are in Amalfi take a look, it is beautiful too.

quite difficult to reach (…)

Non sappiamo cosa elencare per primo.. La pulizia? Il panorama? La cordialità del Sig. Mario?

Attualmente è all'interno di proprietà private.

A hidden gem!! Found within the City of Amalfi’s ancient armory and museum, a free musical - with English sub titles. The musical was beautifully done!! The cast will endear themselves to you!!! You will love the leading men and women and you will hate the villain - the villain plays such a great role as the villain - that you like disliking him!!! The music and lines are easy to follow as there are monitors set up with English translations. The story follows how Amalfi came to be and the struggles the people had to overcome. The voices of the actors are really great!! The sound resonates throughout the hall of this ancient armory!!! Filled with mysterious smoke and giving you the feeling of actually watching from afar!!! Theater in the round .... where every seat has 100% visibility of the action. It’s free!!! At the end you can easily contribute a donation, buy a CD and get a picture with the cast. Love them!!

Un tuffo nel passato....

This is definitely worth the 5€. There are some very cool artifacts.

Very nice way to spend your time when it is raining outside. Interesting museum with lots of information.

Extraordinary place to visit... with the coastline ... launching ships would have been difficult......Architecturally this is close to the Islamic style .. the pointed arches, the cross vaults and pillars... a similar building was recently revealed in Jerusalem... the Amalphitan hospital founded in 1063..

Place is not to big and it takes short time to visit. Entry fee is a bit to high for the quality of attractions. All together not bad but not so impressive.

Piazzetta tranquilla e semi panoramica.

Superb small collection in an outstanding setting including the adjacent cappella and cloister.

Splendido panorama. Tranquillità. Aria buona.
