Had a blast this morning at Capital of Texas Zoo! The owner Michael was very knowledgeable. The junior volunteers and staff were so nice. Such a cool intimate zoo experience. This was truly unforgettable not your average trip to the zoo 🤣. Come out and support this amazing non profit!
Quiet little privately owned zoo collection. Looks like this place has seen better days. Many of the exhibit enclosures are run down. Some of the animals seem lonely and withdrawn. However many of the animals looked to be well cared for.
Overall this was a good visit! There's several areas under construction or dealing with overgrowth but it actually helped create a more natural feeling. They are one other few places with a hippo that you can actually feed! And 3 species of large cat. It's not your typical so experience but worth the 40 min drive and $25 for one adult and kid
The last half mile of the road into this place consists of large gravel. It is out in the country. It reminds me of a wild-animal farm. There were two workers there when we arrived. The pathways to see the animals are dirt and I recommend bug repellant on exposed legs. The animals are well-protected as are the visitors, but many of the fences are old. They have some unique animals and birds, and there are lots of wild birds flying around. It took us about an hour to see the entire zoo, taking our time reading the descriptions.
SHOCKING THIS IS LEGAL IN 2023?!?!?! This is an atrocity! Home made “cages” are way too small. EVERY animal looked horribly sad. Concrete “pool” with exposed rebar for a hippo? NEVER NEVER NEVER I overheard one employee discussing selling exotic animals?! Yikes. Stay away. Be warned. It will make your kids cry.
A really enjoyable experience. Don't come expecting something akin to larger zoos like the Houston or SA zoo. This zoo is much smaller and definitely doesn't have access to the funds that larger zoos have. This does not mean it is not an enjoyable experience.
They have a good variety of animals and experiences (I loved the coatis). The animals all seem well taken care of. The staff can be busy when you arrive so try to be patient, they are often out taking care of the animals. I am impressed by what they are able to accomplish with such a small team. I will definitely revisit this zoo in the future.

We've been going for almost ten years, just an amazing place. They truly love and care for the animals. Don't listen to the one star reviews, they are lies. These animals are happy and healthy. The owner takes excellent care of them and has a staff of teen volunteers that love what they do and are truly there to do good. This place needs support, so DO visit DO Pay for a few cups of feed DO a few experiences with the animals and help them out. They help to breed and protect endangered species. Not anything wrong with that.
Literally the coolest zoo ever. My husband and I stopped here while visiting family in Austin. It really is a hidden gem. It's small but there is a good variety of animals. We were the only ones there on a weekday morning. Unlike large zoos, the animals here didn't just ignore us. They were making all kinds of noises and were very active. The cockatoo said "hello" and even whistled at me. ;) The rural area and rocky trails made it much more of a natural and peaceful setting. The free roaming birds were really interesting to see. Nice staff. You can even purchase a cup of food to feed some of the animals. I chose lemurs. Seems like a one of kind zoo. Definitely recommend. So worth the 45 minute drive. I can't wait to return and see the new habitats they were in the process of adding!
