This museum displays the known history of New Mexico through artifacts and photos. Bummer — the exhibit taking the story from 1912 to present was closed which was NOT explained to us when we bought our tickets. Shame. Cost you a star or two. Most interesting were the RR photos. No punches were pulled in the telling of the early years when European invaded with colonial atrocities.
Comprehensive exhibit. I especially enjoyed the timeline.
This really is a thorough dive into New Mexico history back 1000 years. But mostly focusing on the last 200. Very thorough explanations of major things that happened more recently, including statehood, beautiful presentation of artifacts, and excellent detail in the descriptions.
We were really impressed with this museum. The museum is deceptively big. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but there is so much to see and learn. The museum is laid out very nice in a very organized manner. You can easily spend hours here if you are a history buff!
An absolute must-see in Santa Fe. Very fascinating and informative. Good layout and many exhibits are bilingual (English/Español). Great gift shop also!
We had a beautiful time here as a family recently for a member preview event of the Santa Fe Indian Market exhibit. I’ve been here a couple times now and loved it each time. Really interesting history! And the gift shop is pretty great too.

A must on your first visit to Santa Fe. We did not know very much New Mexico State history, and left informed and enlightened. Our only regret was the Palace of the Governors was closed due to renovations and we were unable to tour that. (Aug 2019) Follow the timeline for the best experience. Wonderful displays. Beautiful gift shop. Highly recommend!
It is the merging of the old and the new! The New Mexico History Museum and the Palace of the Governors in downtown Santa Fe are now connected. The Palace of the Governors is one of the oldest occupied government buildings in the U.S. and has witnessed four centuries of history. A 96,000 sq.ft. New Mexico History Museum has been added next to it that displays ancient artifacts, modern-day films, different scopes of exhibits.
