Following something online application I was then told that they couldn't help me which is the usual run of things with them in addition to making you wait hours in the lobby to hear them say that they can help you
Worst service, rude, don’t help and if your case was closed they will not even tell you. Please shut down this service down and use our money towards a service that actually helps!!!
Don’t recommend it
After you meet all the requirements to get free attorney. They tell you the lawyer will talk to you and treater waiting 5. Weeks she said he can only advise but will not represent you in court. This place is funded by the state and they r not helping people in nj so it should be shut down !!!!
I applied for legal assistance and met all the requirements for a free attorney. However, North East Legal Services bluntly refused to help me, displaying clear bias and favoritism towards certain individuals. It seems they only assist those who 'wet their hands' and turn a blind eye to others in need. Disappointing and unprofessional behavior from a legal service supposed to provide equal assistance to all.
This is a place of public corruption and do not waste your time with their incompetent "lawyers" who will give you the runaround and then at the end do nothing for you and leave you hanging a few a days before trial. After dragging me along for months Caila O’Connor then had the audacity to deeply insult me in a very serious domestic violence case and say I was using the system. How unprofessional and distasteful...Needless to say I won my case without her, it probably was for the better she did not represent me. After reading tons of others comments and reviews, I'm skipping going to their board of directors about complaints and reporting directly to the bar association, IRS and The NJ Center for Non-Profits.
Awesome service I’m glad this is a government funded program for people in need of legal services. I went into the office in jersey city and filled out and application , explained my case , a lovely legal services representative named Kristen Oh was able to help me with my case even came to court with me with an hours notice , she won my case. I would highly recommend her to anyone in need of landlord tenants issues
Scam! Don’t waste your time! We called before to make sure they would be able to help us out, they said yes and to come the next morning. We also made sure to ask if there would be any payment for advice or anything we had to do, they said no. So we Went, they made us wait for 1 hour just to tell us that they needed to know everybody’s income and file an application to get any sort of advice. Avoid at all costs!!
No call back
Absolutely Terrible. Entitled and unprofessional, unethical and smug. Their website portrays them as a bastion of legal protection for those in need and vulnerable. Nothing could be farther from the truth. They actually denied a landlord tenant case where a tenant is being evicted by a landlord in retaliation to habitability complaints, and a supervisor here stated that it is against their policy to take landlord tenant matters that involve habitability issues. One of the primary reasons for the landlord tenant act is habitability and the illegal eviction of tenants who complain and report these issues. So because we have water leaking into
our apartment and rotting our floors, and an elevator that does not function for a disabled person, they refuse to take the case. Independent of merit or evidence. I didn’t even argue. I simply asked why thy have that policy when it runs contrary to their supposed and stated mission. The supervisor became irate and said - he did not feel that he had to provide an explanation. I said I just wanted to understand why they would make such a policy. He is a supervisor their. This policy precludes them from helping the most vulnerable tenants being taken advantage of by landlords breaking the law. But apparently, answering why they have such a policy in place when so many landlord/tenant matters involve habitability issues, to
a prospective client was not important to Gabriel Fox. He dismissed my question and hung up the phone. He ran away like the unprofessional and unethical lawyer that he is. Clients in situations like mine are the exact reasons this organization exists. We’re being legally bullied by our landlord. Never missed a rent payment in 30 years.
He also stated that he would have been able to provide better legal advice if I were not recording the call. How creepy. As if there is some legal secret that he could not say on a recorded line. Calls are commonly recorded in professional settings. We were not discussing his personal matter. We were discussing mine and I keep recordings for my records. He was acting in a professional capacity. It is creepy that he would say that he could provide better assistance if not being recorded.
This group should not be funded. They obviously exist to collect paychecks for themselves. We have evidence of every landlord/tenant violation including several ADA violations. And I must go to
court without a lawyer because the apartment I live has not been maintained in decades and is falling apart which is the landlord’s responsibility. I am glad that I recorded that call. Proof that these people are not doing their stated duty. they claim they’re there to help people. Yet I informed them that I am disabled and require use of a powered wheelchair and can not even get in and out of my building due to a faulty elevator. Yet that kind of case does not meet their criteria.
Yet they liked to repeat how they’re there to help people.
Shameful.
I will be following up with the bar association.
Paid $35.00 for 3 referrals - One of the three I got was a lawyer recently reprimanded for ETHICS violations - Told HCBA I felt that was wrong, they pretty much told me "Tough luck" in reply. I can't talk about any other services they provide, but double-check any referrals they give you.
We paid for a small list of 3 attorneys to contact. Two of them were deceased and I couldn't understand the third one at all. The fee was non refundable.
10 days ago I made a payment here to help me find a lawyer. But now am I going to need another lawyer or consumer affairs to hear back from these people. Only response I received was we received your payment 10 days ago and no other response since then or to my voice mails left. Is that considered respect to normal human beings. Not a peep of a response.
