Totally broke my heart the park is a disgrace ,dug up in areas fenced off can only just make out the large monument on the pillar. No mention on the website about the road works. Please update the website so others are aware of it.
Here sits the memorial monument to Australia’s worst industrial accident.
On 15 October 1970, Australia’s worst modern industrial accident occurred. A 2000 ton span of the West Gate Bridge fell, during construction. Thirty five bridge workers died with another eighteen being injured.
On Oct 15th every year (except for 2020 due to Covid restrictions) there is a memorial gathering to remember the 35 victims, 18 survivors, the families that it affected, and all the brave workers who risked everything to recover the dead and injured.
A reminder for those who think everything gets done incident free. A tragic loss of lives so we may move freely.
I remember when the bridge came down and after all these years never knew there was a memorial. Despite lots of cones around it and not being very welcoming I decided to explore anyway. I took a moment to remember what it must have been like but frankly I cannot comprehend what it must have been for those men and women who were involved in this tragedy.
There is a nice park nearby to explore as well.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Small parking area.
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers" they died together, the 35.

Always remember, respect and honour.
Simple moving memorial to those who died constructing the west gate bridge.
Bit of a secret spot that has a good car park ( has handicap space). Fitting tribute to the lives lost while building this little bridge.
A little known memorial to the lives lost in the bridge tragedy of 1970. It's an amazing spot to stand beneath the enormous towering pillar and imagine the horror of seeing such an immovable object come tumbling down.
