Had the most amazing experience at Woodlawn Cemetery. I traveled up to Detroit for a music trip including visiting the legendary Motown Museum and wanted to visit Woodlawn to pay my respects to some of my favorite singers including David Ruffin and Levi Stubbs. Jukaila, one of the cemetery’ representatives, not only assisted me in finding the graves, but gave me a personal tour and drove me to every grave I wanted to see. I have been to many cemeteries to pay my respects to famous individuals but never have had such a remarkable experience as I did here. If you want to pay your respects to entertainers or individuals you admire, the staff will help you!!

Woodlawn is still a beautiful cemetery but the signs of decay are there. They are little things now but before long they will be glaring ulcers in this formerly idyllic location. I've been visiting family here for over thirty years. My in-laws, my ex husband who I love still, and now my precious son. In April (a full month) after the scheduled spring clean up, I tried to put a bouquet on my son's grave. I had been told I could get cones from the office and when I went there it was full of boxes. Presumably one of them had cones in it. I waited quite a while for the receptionist to be able to find a packing list. Then after about 20 minutes I decided to go across the street to find one. I ended up having to drive to a florist several miles down Woodward. At any rate I was able to place the bouquet in the cone between my son's marker and his father's marker. Mind there is only about 6 inches between them. When I returned about two weeks later the bouquet I placed at my mother in laws headstone was there but the one on my son's was not. Instead I found tiny pieces all over the area and the metal rod that had been stuck in the ground. I was broken hearted. The lawn mowers would have had to run right over the two grave markers. I just could not believe it. When I went to the office to ask about the mowers I was told it was a hired company and not done by the cemetery! If I hire someone to work on my property they certainly should be answerable to me. I was then offered a form to fill out. I presumed (perhaps wrongly) the form was to allow my reimbursement for the cone. As I thought about it later after I'd stopped crying, it occurred to me that it might be to complain about the mowers. However, I was not given any information just the offer of a form and being in the state I was... Neither was I ever contacted by anyone after. This past Sunday I was at the cemetery again and I placed a fresh bouquet on my mother in laws grave and as my son had a birthday Tuesday I planned to come back then. Meanwhile I walked around the area and was surprised to see tiny pieces of the American flag all over the ground. I had my camera and decided to photograph some of the mausoleums on the grounds and drove through some of the older parts of the cemetery. It was sad to see more flags on the ground chewed up by mowers along with fabric flowers and trash. I walked and drove like this for about an hour taking about 100 photos. Hoses attached to spigots that apparently will no longer be turned on. I had been warned by my sister-in -law and carried my own water into the place. And then I came upon a tour. I can only imagine what the guide was saying. "This was once one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the state."

Woodlawn only wants your money to bury you, your family, your friends and associates. They do not genuinely care about your loss. There is no compassion, just do you have plans and payment for burial. They do not keep up the landscaping and grounds like they should. But they will invest as much time as they can in having you commit to a contract to bury your loved one. It is very disheartening. Just drive around the premises and judge for yourself. You will see lots of dirty filthy water in the ponds, weeds and dead flowers. But rest assure, while you are visiting your loved one and grieving, you will be greeted by a counselor to start a contract for burial for someone. Very impersonal and disappointing.

The reason Woodlawn is so beautiful is because of people like me who have come there regularly for decades planting flowers and caring for the graves of their loved ones. In a disgraceful attempt to save money the water has been turned off making this more difficult. Your attempt to compensate for this by providing running water at the entrance of the cemetery is ridiculous. It is especially insulting for seniors like myself to be expected to lug water from the front of the cemetery to the back. Mr. Bokas, if this was your idea, shame on you. Also, people with negative comments about "Kay" have never dealt with "Sylvia".

Beautiful cemetery, very well taken care of.

I ready don’t know how to rate the cemetery customers service. It hurts my heart to say that there is no organization handing off information no one is held accountable. I called for several weeks and no return call and when I spoke with someone they said it would be taking care of. So at that point I’m contacting the headstone company on 8 mile and Woodward seeing if they can contact someone and get some type of respond to a date and time to place my bench.
I feel it should be some tracking system to who or what was done or needed to be done. If I’m not on the office for any reason someone should be able to assist me. My family has been at this location with our love ones for over thirty years this was and will be the last. This is not a new business we all are short handed when it comes to hired help but be mindful on how you treat people in returning calls and forwarding information. It should not have taken me three weeks to get the bench placed because of lack of communication.
I just hope that this cemetery can get some training in bereavement customer service to help the process of every customer that calls or enter through those gates. My one complaint will not change but it will allow me the opportunity to inform you that changes need to happen to continue to service the people in this community. Maybe asking for volunteers trained to help when you are overwhelmed with work. I just would like it to get better for people needing service from the cemetery.

Would it be okay if I bury my mother there on the 14 of January?

The cemetery is beautiful. I saw rosa parks . I been wanting to go see Rosa Parks for a while so I was overwhelmed knowing I got the opportunity to see Rosa Parks. The downside is that the Graves in the back of the cemetery are covered with grass. I tried hard to remove some off a few Graves. I wanted to go back to clean off a few Graves hopefully soon. This is a beautiful place.

Beautiful historic cemetery with many of Detroit’s greats buried there.
We stopped by the office and a representative met us outside with a map and list of some of the notable people buried there with the locations. The map I’ve found online, but not the the list, so I’ve included it here.
It’s a peaceful and reflective walk or drive, with symbolism everywhere. Such detail and artistry in the moments to honor these people. The walk/drive gives you a history lesson of sorts. We looked up the unlisted large monuments and often found the story of those buried there. It was a real representation of Detroit’s past.
Well worth a visit.

Well worth a visit.

I will be the 6th generation of my family to be burried here. Just a peaceful, historical site.

Nice cemetery, very well kept and great for a quiet walk in the green.

My historical family is burried here and very well maintained, a great place to pray and reflect.

Beautiful historic Cemetery however no one is EVER in the office when we visit. Security guard was very helpful and pleasant! The flat headstones are extremely Unattended to,meaning that the grass is over grown over most of them and some completely submerged into the grown! We called from Florida 3 weeks ahead of time for our mother's stone to be unearthed and raised! Understandably funds are low for upkeep, however call out for volunteers to help...especially where the Veterans and infants and babies are buried....these poor souls should NEVER be forgotten! God bless!

Not quite as picturesque as Elmwood next door but still a nice quiet place for reflection on the east side.

Really well kept, very clean. Really beautiful headstones.
