Unique architecture surrounded by Islamic traditional shops. It'll be better if they allow people to pray inside it.

The most incredible space, the central yard with the white floor is so beautiful. The students and faithful, men and women, were either studying or peacefuĺly resting in the shade. A truly magical cultural and religious experience.

Al-Azhar is the most important mosque in Egypt at all, and one of the historical strongholds for spreading and teaching Islam as well. It is also one of the most famous ancient mosques in Egypt and the Islamic world, and part of the Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Foundation. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the Fatimid state in Egypt, after Jawhar al-Siqali completed the conquest of Egypt in the year 969 AD. And he proceeded to found Cairo. He established the Grand Palace ...

Such a spiritual place that gives you goosebumps. As soon enter the Mosque from the southern gate, the old majestic high walls great you with the memories of thousands of Islamic Scholars and Sheikhs who passed these exact paths and learned in these spaces all over around you now.
The whole experience was wonderful.
Despite the location and its surrounding area its a very friendly neighborhood with historical mosques, I go there from time to time to take photos sometimes I organise photo walks in the area
A Very old and spiritual place to visit and take photos. You can enjoy watching the graffiti walls as well. When you are there, you will watch the paradox of all the living activities side by side to the historical cemeteries. Also, on your way there you will watch the small shops for the craftsman, where you can exchange chatting, buy traditional goods, and also take photos
A very beautiful place filled with Islamic decorations made fir the great Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaytbay

Al Azhar Mosque very old mosque dated more than 1000 years old. Still in very pristine condition. There are Islamic lessons taken after every prayer for the common people to attend. Feeling inner calmness when entering this premises

Abu Dhahab (nickname meaning “Father of Gold”) built this mosque when he was at the height of his power, in 1774. The project represents the last of the great religious complexes built by Mameluke beys for the benefit of Islam. The plan of the mosque is a modified copy of the Turkish mosque of Sinan Pasha in Boulaq but the minaret has nothing to do with Ottoman style: it resembles more closely the minaret of the Mosque of al-Ghuri, located not far away.
When Abu-Dhahab died in Palestine in 1775, while attacking the fortress of Acre, his body was brought back to Cairo and buried in the tomb that he built for himself. The tomb area is protected by bronze grilles and decorated with tiles crafted in Tunisia.
The guide of this mosque is one of the kindness persons I met in Cairo. I would recommend a visit on the roof, which gives you the chance to admire the majestic main façade of Al-Azhar mosque, located next door. A very interesting feature that could be seen while visiting the roof is a solar clock, which is beautiful and insanely accurate.

The Al-Azhar Mosque, built between 359 and 361 AH (970 and 972 CE), is Egypt's most important and well-known mosque. For over a thousand years, it has served as both a mosque and a university. When Egypt was taken by Jawhar A-iqilli, the army chief of Al-Muizzulidn Allah, the first Fatimid Caliph in Egypt, it was founded with the goal of promoting the Shiite Doctrine. Al-Azhar currently teaches Islam according to Sunni doctrine. After the city of Cairo was founded, A-iqilli began construction on the Al-Azhar Mosque, which he finished. On the 7th Ramadan 361 AH /972 CE, it hosted the first Friday Prayer. As a result, it is the earliest mosque built in Cairo and the oldest Fatimid monument still standing.
Complex of Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay
The Qaytbay’s complex, was built in 1474, includes several facilities, such as a mosque, school, dome, sabil (water tab for passerby to drink from for free), tub (drinking trough for animals), and rab’. The complex will tell us stories and life of Circassian Mamluk dynasty. Qaytbay was the 18th Burji Mamluk Sultan of Egypt. There is also which is the third biggest Quran holder in the Islamic monuments. It also has two stones with footprints of the Prophet Muhammad.
Beautiful mosque architecturally and very important mosque as it has the tomb of Sultan Qaitbay, one of the most important Mamluk Sultans, the mosque is located within the city of the dead and the area there isn’t the nicest let’s say, please be sure to visit the place during a prayer time as the mosque is closed unless there’s a prayer, so don’t make the mistake i made, i think it deserves another visit from me which i definitely will do.

Very beautiful mosque, with stunning architecture. Definitely worth visiting if you are already in Islamic Cairo.

Our brief visit coincided with prayer time, so we didn't have to pay an entrance fee.

Absolutely stunning old architecture... I saw it only on the outside on a stroll in Khan Al Khalili and it is very well lit externally and looks majestic. It will warrant a special visit during the day some other time.
Great mosque with long history.
Went there on Uber - DEFINITELY create another stop (e.g. back in downtown) after the mosque, as I don't think you can book any rides back from the area. Ask the driver to wait, there is a small additional charge. The highlight is the stained glass and the ceiling pattern. Floral-patterned dome didn't look that special. Filthy surroundings! Take note of prayer times, non-Muslims won't be allowed inside during these moments. Do tip the caretaker (he will watch what you are doing inside the mosque) when you are done.

Historical place but lacks more information.
Even though it is a small mosque, it has a beautiful architecture, it moves wonderful sensations being inside; it is a wonderful experience seeing the image imprinted in the one-pound bills! Stained glass windows are amazingly detailed and beautiful, every single corner is ornamented. It is an excellent option to visit, recommendable.
Great spiritual little place with old decorations & ornaments beautifully crafted alongside every inch of its walls ,ceilings ,doors, colored windows, dome & minaret .....its a bit hard to reach into it as it needs someone expert in these places ..the people are so friendly around it !

Nice building. Good view from the top. It's looks like a maze maybe but you must discover it all.
