This place use to be good ten plus years ago, Now it's just garbage the place was empty. the music was too loud for only 3 tables to occupied. The interior is old and beat up, needs real maintenance. It stinks like they have a cat 🙀 in the back around the bathroom area. The food had no flavor and the sauce taste like supermarket jar sauce. They try to charge me extra on my bill and when I mentioned it the rude waitress said oh it's not me it's how the machine prints out the bill. The same waitress told me how much I should tip her . This place should be closed 🔐 down.
I've been shopping at Food Universe for almost seven years (since summer 2016), and it has usually been a reliable place to buy basic groceries. About a year ago, the store underwent a gradual--but extensive--makeover which has made the shopping experience more pleasant, even though product selection has remained much the same. BUT...
...my biggest concern with the store--and the main reason shoppers should be wary of shopping here--is that the management *routinely* advertises false prices for goods or does not label prices at all. It is extremely common to see the price advertised as one thing (even with a recent price label, such as for sale items) and then to see the prices $1-2 higher for that item at checkout. Recent examples just from my last shopping trip (see attached photos): a jar of tomato sauce (advertised price: $6.99; actual price: $7.99), avocados (advertised price: $0.99 each; actual price: $2 each), chia seeds (advertised price: $7.99; actual price: $9.29). Importantly, these discrepancies have nothing to do with the shopper's club discount, which everyone seems to get regardless of having signed up. Everyone has noticed increases in grocery prices over the last few years as a result of ongoing inflation. But the situation at Food Universe is not about inflation. This is about mis-advertising prices in a highly unethical way that possibly violates NYC consumer protection laws as well. Twice, I have approached staff about these discrepancies, and have gotten just a shrug.
If you are interested in a better shopping experience in the broader Hamilton Heights area, I would recommend the Super Food Town at 161st Street, which is bigger, better, and cheaper. Honestly, even the Key Foods at 146th Street is at least as good as Food Universe in terms of product quality, and is definitely cheaper.

On September 5th 2023 I went to this supermarket on 138th and broadway and used my ebt card data was stolen to rob me of $100 in food stamps!!!! It has to be a employee that works there skimming device they take your card number and password and rob your food stamps!!! Don't use no cards at this supermarket!!!!
Hey be careful I was there on 9/12/2023 got a couple of things for my mom with the snap benefits and left and come to notice there was $209 stolen I went to the second cashier be careful check your cards before and after your purchase (You say you have that but your supermarket was the only place I used it that day and There’s a few people I know that’s including my aunt that got their snap stolen and they went to this supermarket as well so it’s not 1 person it’s a few and different days I see someone said they went the 5th I went the 12 and there’s is a few people went different days

Had raw clams and oysters for $15 a dozen - a steal! Fresh and good with some lime or alone but they have cocktail and hot sauces available.
I shop there as much as I can their products are quality, if you are in the area, I recommend the deli department, nice very nice.
As an avid Shopper looking for Quality Products at low prices this is my first choice of spmkts in the area. Wkly Sales prices and member Customer lower price are always a good consumer tool. Well stocked and warm employee services are also the reason why I continue to come back...

Well stocked store in a busy neighborhood in the upper west side of Manhattan. Friendly , helpful staff is a definite bonus for visitors & shoppers . Nice selection of goods to choose from that are well organized on the shelves .
The Second time ordering from this location this past month and got Rotten food TWICE !! i don’t know what happened but this location was not like this before is a shame!! i ordered crab meat, the smell when i opened the order completely stank up the kitchen not exaggerating and gave me old lime wedges they were literally brown like wheres the damn pride??!! i am chef AND any kind of meat and especially seafood when it goes bad gives off such a strong smell the fact the cook still grabbed it to cook with it is beyond disgusting!!! I called and went back for a complete refund!! NEVER AGAIN WILL I GO BACK
My mom loved this place 40 years ago when she first lived in NYC. On a recent trip back she wanted to go back and she was not disappointed. The servers were very friendly and accommodating. The soap was loaded with seafood (mostly seemed like different fish and some shrimps). No fishy smell. The shared tables are a bit weird but funny how it actually worked out and she ended up talking to other older ladies who joined us 😂 the only reason why I didnt give it 5 stars it’s because there was a pesky fly around the whole time.
This place is huge! A big supply of everything. The help is very friendly and goes all the way out to help you with any questions. I used to shop at C-Town for more than 20 years and just a couple of months ago I decided to try this supermarket, I fell in love with the service, but most of all, the prices are lower than C-Town! I will never go back to C-Town, I will stay with this supermarket for as long as I live!!!

Here the food is always good. Really the best place to try authentic Domincan food. The only problem was the service at the front desk when ordering something to go. The staff there want to put out all the orders at the same time creating a mess and delaying all arderá.
But even with this situation, this is my favorite restaurant. I love the food here it is very tasty!

They pre fried the fish so they fry it again when you order it . And they fry for a minute, my fish was ok. But the worst was the Bathroom. I go to use it, and it was not clean also there is no lock .you could not lock it anyone can just open the door . The worst was they had a string on the door . I asked a helper there about the lock and said you have to use the string and tie it to the faucet. And the garbage can which is very big was full to the top with dirty toilet paper. And they had no toilet paper . I walked out ,I have never been so grossed out .
How can the owner or owners not have any pride for their establishment.

They are great. Good and fresh food. I always have the fried fish bites and salmon. Tartar and pink salsas are included. Makes it even better. Unfortunately they are closed now, I hope they reopen soon the neighborhood needs them.

This place is both a restaurant, a small grocery store, and a fresh fish market. They have delicious fresh fish at reasonable prices. It's better to pay cash. They also have a very tempting menu of seafood that is already cooked and the store smells absolutely delicious when you come in!
I tried to order online from here on a Tuesday evening at 6pm through their website. Heard about the place from the shooting etc. and wanted to support a local business. Waited 2 hrs no food. No answer from the restaurant and whatever company they use for orders (ChowNow) was unreachable. Beyond ridiculous. Wasted an hour and a half for nothing. Can't even get a refund. Beware of this place seems to be pretty much a fraud.

The reviews were right! Great food, atmosphere, service music and a family atmosphere. The manager greeted every table spoke to them asked about out experiences. I told him I recently moved in the area, was researching reviews and it led me to them. He presented his staff to me who were already being awesome folks! Large TVs with various games so if you want to watch a game and sit at the bar you have that option.
The coconut milk I purchased was not what I expected. Very hard on the inside. When I spoke to management, he walked away. Very rude people work here. They never take accountability for their wrongdoings.

The store was clean, everything fresh and stocked. Customer service great and the workers were extremely knowledgeable
Went here to get food from the too good to go app twice. The staff is extremely nice and pleasant. I really felt welcomed. The food is fresh tasting which is good! And it’s very flavorful. No complaints whatsoever. The first night was salmon, white rice, and beans. The second night was fried seafood, fries, rice, and beans with sauce and lime. They gave me a very nice portion for $5 and I’m very thankful for them. I highly recommend this place.

Unfortunately, this has to be THE WORST place I have been to. The service we received as a big party was TERRIBLE to begin with. We did not feel welcomed at all, I believe her name was Luisa that took care of us and let me tell you she has the worst attitude. She seemed frustrated, upset, and just mad at the fact we asked her simple questions. The environment was not what we expected. They even charged us incorrectly at the end of everything. 2 other females helped us at the end and they were sweet as pie. (Margarita & Laura i think those were their names)
Poor staffing, crowded aisles, consistently re-stocking during high traffic times, and seemingly sponsored by Boarshead (only option in many cheeses)... the list goes. But such is shopping in Harlem. They seem to know it's the only option in the area. Food Universe: where else ya gonna go?
Update: the place HAS made massive strides and esthetically looks much better too. Rooms for improvement with 1) cheese selection and 2) the settings on the self-checkout (so sensitive for potential theft -- it's painful)

I don't highly recommend this restaurant at all, the food was super salty, they did not had avocado, they didn't have coffee nor any desert. Over price! They have nerve to charge credit card fee 😬😬😬WTF! They have excellent prices, the staff was friendly, & the fried seafood was good; the batter could use a tad bit more seasoning. The steamed seafood was excellent, but their vegetable packages for the steamed seafood are a bit on small side. I'd definetly go back again though.

Disgusting service. I was going there for a little this winter as my wife and I wanted salmon from there. The guys in the back serving you seem to think its a joke to con people out of the fish you are buying from them. They put fish back while my wife wasnt looking and still charged. And while I was there they decided when I was ordering whiting to not give me the full amount and when i said count the whiting again they decide to add an extra. Disgusting service and no moral.
Very odd taste from these hazelnuts seems like the nuts are expired ,not up to date be careful .always look at the dates on everything.
Pleasant grocery store, very small inside. The prices aren't so bad. The cashier I had was soft spoken and quite helpful. They check your bags before you shop and they also provide free delivery.

A very busy and well stock store. Stores maintain well staff is friendly and shows shelves are well stocked. The variety of fresh food is quite tasty and on hand and available for you to consume sometimes I don't get out the parking lot before I eat a small meal that I get from that's how good it is.
1st & last time customer. My order was through door dash. Ordered the shrimp in rice soup. Shrimps didn’t taste like anything and found a few off them that were not properly cleaned (shrimp poop). Also, there was barely any rice in the soup. Called the store to express my concerns & the gentleman that I spoke to was rude but not rude. He keep empathizing how he put more shrimp in the soup for me at no extra cost. It’s like he was missing the point. In his own way he was trying to make the situation better by preparing me another soup or something else but yet never apologized.
Do not recommend. If you haven’t tried the shrimp soup from “el conde” you are missing out. Hands down one of my favorite places! Soup is full of flavor and shrimps are properly cleaned. You will not be disappointed:)

Awful quality snd taste. I ordered lobster tail. It was cooked sliced outside of the shell snd that lobster was probably older than me.

Loved this place I was a little concerned about it being a little hole in the wall. Well don’t let that fool you. I purchased fresh salmon and king fish. The cuts were perfectly chunky and my family noticed the freshness. My husband even asked where did you get this fish from? Went back to try the cooked food. This place didn’t disappoint. Definitely recommend. Please don’t change!

Mostly reasonable prices (but posted prices don't always scan correctly so watch) Usually Not crowded a small selection of international cooking items if you look carefully. Doesn't require membership card to get discounts.

You can get what you need, but I find them more pricy than Foodtown on 145st.I live down the block and dont go in here as.frequently since I noticed certain my kids like are.cheaper elsewhere.
Fresh!!! No fishy smell. Bought whole fish and a lobster both were amazing They cleaned both property, so when we came home, all we had to do was season and cook. Definitely will go back!!!
Terrible customer service your staff is racist biased and proud. They don’t respect their customers And they don’t Value their customers. They will even stomp around you throughout the store like they forget we the customers are the ones who give you a salary to live off of. From the African cashier lady to the Mexican or Ecuadorian stock man who is always there straight to the Dominican manager with the short haircut who usually works the mornings. They are cruel! If you want a peaceful family trip to the supermarket stay away from this spot. They hate their fellow minority customers; mind you they are all minorities. Racist? I’ll say! Or just plain ignorant.
Ordered thru DoorDash, dasher got here 20 min earlier than pick up time requested and left the food on the sidewalk or our building. Obviously it was stolen. The manager refused to help and said I had to take the complaint up with DoorDash. Passed the buck, like a chump. Plus, it was our anniversary dinner. You think people would try a little decency in these trying times.
One of the cashiers was extremely rude ! I hated the experience and will never go back . My sister was profiled because the cashier thought that she was using someone’s else’s credit card, mind you the total was $13, but when shown the ID and saw that it wasn’t the case , she looked stupid. Horrible !!
The food is purely DISGUSTING! Idk how they're open for business & serving old & rotten food! The crabs smell like ammonia, the fish nuggets & whitting is spoiled & old. Seafood is supposed to be fresh. I will NEVER order/buy from this place again. Please be careful!

I love shopping at this store when I run out of sausages. It is my go to place for the immediate things I run out of in my kitchen. If you have your club card you can get some really good deals. This is really a good store with really good people working there. I love the gospel music they play loud, it is so sweet and inspiring.

This food they sell in this store is not the kind of food I consume. Also don't like the way they treat their customers who have shopped their for many years as if they are going to steal the terrible food they sell that is full of additives and preservatives. Many years ago I shopped there and they changed the price on items that were supposed to be on sale to higher prices. Also the attitudes of the cashiers are depressing I never step foot in there anymore.

This is my second time I purchased crab meat and it has been rotten with a horrible smell when cooked. The new manager gets a 5 star for changing things around includin organic items but you have 2 cashiers with the worst attitude. Both same dark complexion a bit heavy at least one speak spanish.

BUYER BEWARE. I have been getting terrible service from this place for a long time but tonight crossed the line. They provided me with this extra extra extra crispy aka burnt salmon and refused a refund. Even after acknowledging that it was unacceptable.

Negative star....They took almost 2hrs to deliver for some fried food and I live don’t the block , forgot the rest of my order and just Disgusting the 3 stone crabs I ordered smelt like ammonia as soon as I opened it only to find they were sour and the meat was black ... when I called back they are giving me attitude only to say “the crab are not fresh mami, frozen, throw out if no good!” (like no duh)... customer service and food trash...

You don’t understand how good the food is here. Best salmon and shrimp ever with friend plantains. Their tartar sauce is crack. Been going here since my college years back in 2007. My #1 go to for fried shrimp and fried plantains, and my fav, salmon steak with fries plantains and veggies. They put the salmon in the oven to bake and crisp up. It’s just excellent. Taste is amazing!! Go there. I’ll post a pic when I go back tomorrow.

Since undergoing management changes and renovations, the service here has dramatically improved. While the clean and organized appearance makes it much more appealing, the courteous employees and management, as well as a wider variety of foods, make me enjoy shopping here. The installation of self checkout changed the game. Lines move smoothly and you can be in and out fairly quickly. I love the selection of gourmet and international foods and unlike before, most everything is fresh!
The one thing I don't like is how a particular manager watches like a hawk when I use self checkout, especially since I'm a regular customer. He's a little older, so I chalked it up to age and doing his job to deter stealing, but no customer should feel surveilled. I'd like to think that it's not because I'm black, but I haven't seen him do it to white customers.
My favorite spot is the deli. The young guys who work the counter always greet me with pleasant words and a smile and they are skilled in slicing the meat to your liking. The older gurs who fill in occasionally, are kind, but their cuts aren't even.
I'm really happy with the improvement of this store and hope that they continue to listen to their customers for even more growth and longevity.
