Gorgeous campsite but it has been taken over by homeless full time residents since July/Aug 2023.
Free camping in a primitive setting. You can not get better than that. There is a lot of historic places to see and experience.
Several Big Sites! Plenty of room for anyone hiking or biking the C & O. Closest campsites to DC less than 10 miles out of town.
Note: There is airplane noise throughout the night and it is a bit inland from the rivers edge
Really nice hiking and walking spot, I had fun skipping stones in the river and wading in it too.
"Backpacking lite." An oasis minutes outside of DC, great for testing your gear or just getting into the woods without having to drive or hike a long way.
Campgrounds for hiker bikers is such a treat. Thank you.
Limited parking. Port-o-potty. Good views of the Potomac River in the camping area.
Campsite 1, 2 and 3 are left off of the foot bridge. 4, 5 & 6 are to the right and are closer to the bridge. All camp site areas are big and have a bike rack.

Water is just over the foot bridge. We use a fold up wagon to make life easier. Parking was not a big issue, we hade two vans, a pick up nd trailer and a mini van and a Jeep. We also had 3 camp sites book, so not a lot of competition.

The walk from parking the campsite was more of a hill and longer than I expected. Lots of steps as well, but doable.

Lot so traffic on the tow path, but nothing major. Other than the being in the flight path of the airport, and of course the bull frogs, not a lot of noise.

I would Suggest for the the price, if you are a scout troop, renting 1, 2 & 3 OR 4, 5, and 6 so you have the whole are to yourself.
You can’t drive your car to the campground, there is no parking lot to park your car too. You have to carry your stuff and walk in. It’s horrible experience
This campsite had a day-use area on one side and 5 campsites, each with a picnic table and a fire pit. Not very much available firewood on the ground (quite picked over), but lots across the canal in the wooded area (nearby bridge makes that easy). Beautiful view of river but difficult access (steep banks about 10 feed straight down for most of it). Lovely flocks of merganser ducks and canada geese in late Nov in the morning. 4-5 port-a-potties up by the C&O path, campsite is downhill from it. Try to arrive with some daylight left or else it is difficult to find exactly where the campsites are.
It is so convenient to the road that it is a little to accessible. Other that that it is a beautiful area and sets up for a nice bicycle ride into DC...
It's a nice, peaceful and pristine camping ground, can easily accommodate 10+ people. Toilets aren't cleaned!
Its only 0.25 mile walk from the parking (not 0.75 as some other comment mentioned)
Convenient camping spot for youth groups. You have to pack in all your gear but it's a short hike. Great area for firemaking and lots of firewood from fallen trees. Then you're right on Billy Goat B trail for some good hiking.
What a beautiful, quiet, and small campsite. It’s really tucked in and hidden behind a trail, which means it can be quiet, but also have a lot of foot traffic. There are no more than 8 sites so be sure to get your spot locked in!
I LOVE that this is right along the river. It’s also incredibly close to Great Falls, if you want to walk 3.5 miles on the towpath to get there.
Troop 117 of West Creek, NJ came here in 2015 to do a 50 mile cycling trek in and out of Washington DC. We are returning this year, 2018, to do it all again! Great camping and ultra convenient!
A great little campsite that is about 3/4 of a mile walk from the Carderock Parking area. Take the Billy Goat C trail from the parking lot to the C&O towpath. Then take the towpath until you see the sign on the left for the campsites. This is about 100 feet past the Billy Goat B trail sign. Potable water is up the towpath in the opposite direction of the parking lot across a foot bridge. Great location for scout troops, but a bit of a walk. Lots of nature. Saw a bunch of blue herons while I was there.
