Beautiful! I enjoyed seeing this very old cathedral. There is no public parking, so walk or get a ride to drop you off. Also no public restroom. Many other things to see nearby. It's free but a donation is recommended.
Beautiful historic Cathedral with a lovely Mass. You can find the tomb of Juan Ponce de Leon in the cathedral.
This is a review of the management and services of the church, not the church itself which is beautiful and very historic. Hours are basically nonexistent and if you go and the church is open you’re basically very lucky as the times shown here are not accurate. Their phone is always either occupied or they have an outdated answering machine that gives inaccurate or conflicting information.

Catedral Basilica Menor de San Juan, one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in San Juan and also the final resting place, and tomb, see pictures below, of Spanish explorer and settlement founder, "Juan Ponce de León". This church was stunning and also the history behind this church was absolutely amazing as well. The craftsmanship is unmatched to anything built today, also a must go if you ever visit San Juan!!!
Although it doesn’t look solid from the outside, it doesn’t look like cathedrals in Europe, but inside it is very beautiful and rich. Entrance is not free, you need to donate at least a little to enter, but they keep the doors open so everyone can take a photo without even going inside
Beautiful place of worship. This is the oldest parish in the western hemisphere. It was established in 1511, but the basilica was not built until 1521. Unfortunately it was destroyed by a hurricane and the current cathedral was actually built in 1540. Still, it is the second oldest Catholic Church in both Americas. The cathedral is home to St. Pius relics and Juan Ponce de Leon tomb.
Absolutely beautiful Cathedral. We went to tour the church, and we could have spent hours there. It's so large, beautiful, heart touching, and full of history.
Beautiful small quiet chuch. Very friendly staff. We went to pray during our cruise stop ( very close to the cruise port) and felt so welcomed.
Beautiful old church. They were saying mass while we were there so did not get to explore the church as much as I would have liked to. Have a nice giftshop that also sells bottled cold water.

This church is a thing of beauty! I loved everything about it. Was lucky enough to be there the day before Easter when they had a mass. It was moving. The architectural style of this church tells you a story just by walking around it. Like going back in time.... to an era when constructing a building was an artform and where beauty and attention to detail trumped mass production and deadlines. This will always be a fond memory of mine and I highly recommend this cathedral.

Gorgeous church with amazing restoration completed in 2021 that is innovative in how to preserve and display the history of the church. Its very beautiful interior, it is restored with several alters that present very old pieces.
Beautifully kept old church. The attendants were very helpful and informative. I am glad that Jesus is kept in a side chapel and not behind the main alter.
The courtyard out from outlines the location of the original church, with the location of the altar and other notable spots engraved into the cobblestone. The church was moved due to the common Catholic action of stuffing the walls with dead bodies in order to be close to the alter. It stunk. The compacted the bodies had a ceremony and moved the church into the building behind, also used as a crypt. In a large catholic, military city enclosed in walls, where else would you go? Hallowed ground to say the least.
Beautiful church to visit! Especially after almost two decades of restoration and truly a piece of history along with the monument to Ponce de Leon monument in front of it which adds to the beauty of the church and it’s historical significance! Truly a must for pictures and to visit while in old San Juan.
Iglesia de San José was so beautiful inside. I fell in love with the stained glass windows. The altar was also magnificent. However, what made this church so breathtaking was the beautiful stained glass story in the windows. I could have stared at it for hours.
Offers mass on Thursday noon. Attended mostly by old local citizens, along with a few tourists. Great experience.
Remember not to wear shorts if you are attending mass there. There seems to be mosquitos. They punish any one who enters wearing shorts.

What a breathtaking church! After many years closed for renovation, they just finished the restoration and it's finally available for visits and events. This weekend I had my first wedding there and it's beautiful.
Note for weddings and ceremonies: the October heat and humidity inside the church was... heavy, and the sound system needs redesigning, no one on the first half of the church understood a word of the ceremony, even the bride and groom.

The locals told this is a must visit. We agree! This church is a national treasure of San Juan and Puerto Rico.
For two decades it has been under renovation and the final product is absolutely stunning. The attention to detail through the church is exquisite. The renovation designers were going for a simple clean look, soothing to the eye and the soul. They nailed it.
The church is open to all at during the opening hours. I would have posted the times, but they seem to be in flux. At the time of our visit, they were open Wednesday- Saturday for visitors and Sunday for services.
The day we visited, there was a memorial/funeral service about to begin. It was very interesting to see them using the facility at the same time tourist were exploring the church.
Who will enjoy this? We brought our two boys, 13 and 16, and they hung with us no problem!
Overall, I’m in complete agreement with the locals. This is a must church see on your visit to San Juan.

Beautiful old church and monastery. Had a awesome nativity scene. They were serving coffee and sandwiches to the Homeless on Saturday morning. One of the priests passed away from covid recently sadly
I did go into this building personally. I was able to see it from the outside and enter it inside in due part of it being one of our stops to a tour I did around the Old San Juan area. I need to add, this was a great way to learn about the architecture of Old San Juan building and pass history. I would highly recommend for everyone to look into setting up a tour because it helps you to learn more about the pass history and culture.

Not long here,so my short stay was nice. Found a toilet in a restaurant with a sign in the Irish gaelic language,noting not to throw hand towels down the toilet
In 1876 - The third Order of the Franciscans built a major chapel, which is now known as the San Francisco de Asís Church. Beautiful!
