As a Virginia Beach native, it is amazing to see this here. An important part of local history, we hear about Grace growing up so it is nice to have a place to go to honor her. Her story has changed a little over the years, but the fact remains that she was mistreated and targeted due to religious bigotry. There are much we can still learn from her and her story. We found the location to be interesting and it was striking how from certain angles, she is looking down on the city center buildings. Please check this out, whether you are a local or visiting, and be sure to also check out the nearby Virginia Historical Marker, The Testing of Grace Sherwood (K 276).
Very cool. I love the fact the church wouldn't let them put the statue on thier property because she was a witch. So they faced her looking at the church. She wasn't even a witch hahaha!

Made a quick stop here and as we were taking a look at the statue had someone drive by warning that she would curse us.

Very well put together monument, it's nice to see how the youngest SOF has come so far. Thank you all operators past, present, and future.
My grandfather was a frogman with UDT in WWII. This is a very nice memorial for all those who gave their service and lives for all of us. Very nicely done at the end or beginning, depending on where you're coming from, of the VA Beach Boardwalk.
Great memorial to those who served with the US Navy Seals.

The story of Grace Sherwood is that she was accused of being a witch, and then consented to “trial by water”. This meant she was placed in water just above the head - if she sank she was innocent and could be buried in holy ground. However, she floated and so was incarcerated. Later released, she farmed and lived until 80. Through her family, her name was cleared and she was offered exoneration. This statue was erected and includes a letter from the governor basically apologizing to the family for the wrongs done to Grace.

This is a really interesting piece of history but is difficult to find. @GoogleMaps navigation leads you to a hospital and we had to search extensively to find it on the corner plot of the parking lot that faces the crossroads.
Located on N Witchduck Road in front of Sentara hospital, I found this beautiful historical sculpture using the Atlas Obscura app, otherwise, I would have driven right past it. It isn’t easy to see from the road at all. This is a statue of the last woman convicted of witchcraft in Princess Anne County and Virginia’s only person convicted with a trial by water. She was tried and convicted and then imprisoned nearby. I’m pleased that this history of past injustice was not forgotten and I believe that past wrongs need to be acknowledged instead of whitewashed or hidden. Worth a visit to enrich your sense of the deep history of the area.

We also found a hidden rubber ducky that we passed on by hiding it at Roosters Cafe and Grill, outside in the bushes!

Reading the story of our Sister City of Moss, Norway was very heartwarming while also striking with the memory of lost loved ones and their sacrifices and our connection with people far away being closer than we think.

I can't describe how I felt or find the words for this moment. I am glad that we as a nation have people like this to pay the ultimate price for their country to be free.

As a photographer, I'm always looking for something new and exciting to add to my (very large) collection of photography.

This is one of my top 5 favorites ever.
There aren't enough witch statues in the world. This helps correct that omission. Interesting bit of history.

This was so well done as a tribute to the men who served from Underwater Demolition of WWII to Operators of today. They also paid tribute to the Service Dogs as warriors! You can see the Golden Stars for the fallen and the Golden Paws for the fallen dogs and you can also see the laser photo of both the men and the dogs in the panels surrounding the Top Central Figure, a Frogman, from the original UDT

Erected after the wreck of the Dictator, a Norwegian ship which fell victim to the Graveyard of the Atlantic off the shore here in the 1890s. The brave Coast Guard and other Virginia Beachers helped save as many as they could, and the Norwegian Lady stands as a memorial to those who passed and to honour those who were brave enough to save them. Moss, Norway has the same exact statue that has the same inscription facing out to sea there as well. Located right by the Naval Aviation Memorial, you can consolidate visits easy. Cheers.

The statue is right next to dairy queen which has a great shaded canopy, overlooking the Virginia beach.

Pretty cool monument dedicated to Navy seals, the unsung heroes who have died in service to our country, often on missions that were not in public knowledge. You can find it close to 38 1/2 street near the Courtyard Marriott.
Beautiful! Wonderful My son sent me away to relax! I did! Wonderful walk down the beach!
The statue offers a small history on Grace. There is a bench to sit and reflect and parking is only steps away. It is free to visit.
