Biggest tip is to plan for 5ish hours to get to the lookout. It's more like 14 miles round trip.

What a hike! The website says the first 2.8 miles to the trail split is uphill. I am an average hiker and I stopped every other switch back to catch my breath, very steep! Took me 4 hours to get up to the split off to lookout/monogram. Luckily some down hikers encouraged me to at least get to the valley lookout (not the top of lookout mtn). By the 5th hour I had enjoyed my view and headed down, which took about 2 more hours to get down at a fast pace. Plan for a full day and a very difficult hike to either lookout or monogram. Preferably make it a two day hike, which is what most others seem to do.
I planned for cold weather (early October) but had a sunny day and did not need my hoodie, long John's, or winter coat... There was a little bit of frost near the alpine meadow area, but I was warm from the hike.
Other reviews warn about car break ins and the sign in the parking area had me concerned, but I guess I got lucky and no broken glass for me.

Getting to this Lookout is an arduous hike! Nonetheless a satisfying one at that. Taking into consideration a beautiful sunny day and the picturesque scenery. This Lookout is positioned just right. I was gladly surprised that the person who had claimed the lookout for the night was kind enough to let me come up and take a look around. As I made my way up the stairs I could tell how this Lookout is well taken care of. It's the most maintained one I have visited so far and the panorama from inside as well as on the catwalk are just incredible.
This was a hard hike for me, due to the length and elevation gain. The road to the trailhead was decent. The trail itself was steep and a bit rocky at first, then well maintained and smoother in the middle portion and again steep and rocky at the end, with some short exposed sections. The views from the top were beautiful.
This is a pretty strenuous hike and not for the faint of heart. It’s a little bit overgrown at the moment. The payoff of the view comes pretty late into the hike and a lot of it is just through the woods (I expected it to open up earlier? I don’t know). I got all the way to the top and it turned out to be a foggy day and I just about jumped off the mountain. It is what it is! Not the trails fault lol
Granted this isn't a review for look-out but instead monogram lake, but after you make it through all the switchbacks, the endless field of stinging nettle, the small/ refreshing waterfall bridge, you finally make it to a fork of two trailheads. One is for look-out and the other for monogram lake. We headed to the lake. This was by far the most strenuous hike I've ever made, personally, but by far worth it! Almost 6 miles straight up with lots of irritation, from burning stinging nettle to ample snow fall once you make it through the tree line. Definitely recommend you have the trail downloaded before making the treck, it's easy to lose the trail. So worth the battle for the sights alone! We calculated a little over twelve miles up/ down.
Lots of switchbacks but super worth it. I've spent quite a few nights up at the lookout, and over at monogram lake. Great views from the lookout but water is scarce. Monogram lake offers some awesome fishing and the scramble up the ridge above the lake is one of my favorite. Loads of blueberries in the fall, so the bears love it here. Always be bear safe and hike safe. Enjoy the hike!
Tried this on Saturday, May 15th. Made it about 2.5 miles up before having to turn back from deep snow. When I got back to my car, two of the windows had been smashed in by thieves. There wasn't even anything worth stealing in the car. Needless to say, I won't be back.
There is plenty of parking at this time of year. The trailhead is located just as you head up the hill from the road. Its pretty well maintained. I've never had a problem but its always best to make sure valuables are out of sight when leaving your car.

Great views! Hard and steep terrain. Snow is already on the trail! Soon, it will be time for the winter route due to avalanche danger
A burner with a fierce fly population on the lower trail; but filled with views to make the heart ache and the soul soar.
I didn't hike it, just turned around there.
