My all-time favorite neighborhood restaurant. Grew up eating here, the food and service is always top notch. El Unico has catered countless events for family and friends with the most generous servings at an affordable price, if you know you know!

I have been coming here for years, ive never had a bad experience except for the people on the phone who take orders occasionally forgetting things.

However, I have just today experienced one of the most disgusting situations I have ever had.

After having brought home, and after eating over half of my Picadillo, my eyes, which are very good, noticed something in my meat. Tiny strands of what I can only assume are cat hairs, holding the meat together.

I actually took the time to remove several dozen from the meat, and placed about 6 of them on to one of the black beans so they show up in my photo. There are literally hundreds. in some instances, they hold the meat together, and when you lift the meat, the hairs hold on the side of the fork some of the meat bits like a tiny rope.

I can confirm they are not strands of meat, or sinew. They are hairs. Tiny, clear, hairs....

I am a town employee and will be saving this meal for inspection when I have my office contact the health department.

I will also be ordering another, Untouched meal for inspection within the restaurant.

Came by this restaurant for the first time to grab lunch. Ordered a Pan con Bistec, the bread felt fresh and flavors were all there! My only feedback is it could of used more Bistec. Also ordered guava churros which were delicious!

Nostalgic, for me, it's a trip back to days and times of my youth. Now, as an adult, I absolutely love and appreciate both the food and atmosphere. It's as if to me it were me stepping back in time. The smells, the taste of the food, and the prices are beyond ideal. I'd highly recommend this establishment if you want some traditional Cuban food at a great price.

I LOVE IT!! THE FOOD IS GOOD AND THE PRICES ARE SO AFFORDABLE. BESIDES THEY GIVE BIG PORTIONS WHICH FILL YOU UP. I RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO EVERYONE!!

The food was great but the server made believe there was no change to take an extra tip and then when I waited for the change she shamed me into giving her a $10 tip for an $18 meal. So I'll never go eat there again but the food was good.

When visiting Union City, definitely try this local Cuban restaurant with flavors that have remained the same over the years. Crispy and flavorful chicharon, palomilla, vaca frita, and dessert tres leches.

Tried this resto for the first time today. The meal was so good and the serving was huge for the price ! Had the Lechon Asado with rice and black beans for just $6 ! So good ! The staff are also very friendly. A no-frills but cozy and welcoming place. I will definitely return to try the other items.

I can’t believe how much this restaurant has changed, the sandwiches dry the chicken is ultra thin and they’re charging you $13 for this sandwich… this is not a cuban restaurant, I would go somewhere else… sad to say, I’m angry to be served a dry, thin sandwich

My Airbnb host recommended this spot for coffee and food. They serve Columbian style dishes and coffee. I ordered a Cafe Con Leche, it was very good. I had some scrambled eggs with chorrizo, and I ordered some Churros Rellanos Dulce style to go.

The staff was friendly and very helpful even though I didn't speak spanish. The food was good and the coffee was great, but the churros stole the show for me!! They were perfect with just enough filling and not too sweet.

If you like local, this is the spot!!

Great restaurant. Wonderful mango margaritas and awesome tacos

$1.50 for a great tasting cafe con leche make this my morning stop en route to my job sites. This also the absolute cheapest place anywhere for Spanish cuisine. Typically I’ll get roast chicken on rice with beans and plantains or yuca - $5.50. I happened to mention El Unico to my dentist and she said sh now gets a take out meal for her whole family once week from here. The decor isn’t 5 star dining but the wait staff are nice and the variety of dishes quite extensive

AMAZING. This is definitely a great restaurant if you're seeking good and inexpensive (and high quality) Cuban cuisine.

Sandro was our server. He's a quaint and endearing Cubano with impeccable customer service skills. He's pretty funny too! He joked I looked like LeBron James haha! He was super attentive and energetic! Definitely a star server and great man.

I had the skirt steak with rice and beans with tostones. The food was well seasoned and the portion sizes will leave you well satisfied but not too stuffed.

The environment was clean and restrooms well-kept. Their desserts are also great.

Overall you will not be disappointed if you're seeking great, "home-made" Cuban cuisine in a place that provides comfort and a peaceful dining experience.

First time ordering takeout from a Mexican place that has super bland food. Ordered shredded chicken enchiladas and this disgusting mess is what I got. No flavor at all, chicken is white with no seasoning, AND ITS NOT EVEN SHREDDED!!! On top of that they gave me a side salad that’s all wilted. Tried to make it have some taste and the red sauce on the side has no flavor either. DO NOT RECOMMEND for takeout. Just awful

The food is good and good price. Delivery service is not good, at times. Delivery man announced he would not bring the food to apt (one flight of stairs) and demanded that payment be ready immediately upon his arrival.

I like to keep a list of bookmarks on the ready. That way, if I ever happen to be in a certain neighborhood/have a specific craving, I can pull out that list. This was one of those times. I was running some errands nearby and I also had a craving for a Cuban sammie. My list showed me that El Artesano was one of the restaurants I wanted to try. Hubby and I stopped in on the Sunday of President’s Day Weekend at around 11 am. The restaurant is set up kind of like a diner. They have diner-style counter seating, and they also have two dining rooms. It was packed at that time but luckily, we only waited 5 minutes for a table.

They have different specials each day of the week and one of the offerings on Sundays are Ajiaco Criollo, which is a Cuban-style stew. This one had potatoes, sweet potato (or maybe some kind of squash?), plantains, and super tender pieces of pork bone meat. It tasted more like a soup than it did a stew, but it was still delicious nonetheless. I ended up dipping my Cuban sammie in the stew, which sounds weird but don’t knock until you’ve tried it. The Cuban was good but I felt like it could have been a bit toastier/hotter. It seems they pre make the sandwiches in the morning and have them ready to be heated up once ordered. Hubby had his go-to, the masitas (fried pork chunks). It comes with two sides. I don’t really love this dish because the pork tends to be too dry, but he enjoyed it. For drinks, I had a cortadito and he had a fresh orange/carrot juice and both were a great addition to the meal.

Tip - parking is a nightmare in that area. I’m not sure if it’s a Sunday thing or an all the time thing. I would recommend parking a bit further and walking over. The time it’ll take you to walk over will be shorter than the time you’ll spend circling looking for a spot.

Good place for casual Mexican food. I didn't find many options being a vegetarian. Their hot sauces were really awesome!

Sorry to say I used to come here back in the '80s with my husband I'm Puerto Rican and he was Cuban this restaurant was one of the best restaurants that ran in 1980s and '90s I asked for camarones alejillo and they gave me camarones en salsa the rice was served cold dry kinda hard and the juca had no garlic no purple onions. Very sad to say that they don't make tamales anymore either but they make it Honduras tamales how does that go in a Cuban restaurant.
I'm sorry I was disappointed that I will not be coming back. I truly wish them the best.

This is the second time I eat here. The service and food were both excellent. Honestly, this now my favorite Mexican restaurant! The Tacos Birria were superb and my vegetarian friend who ordered vegetarian enchiladas said they were delicious. You can’t go wrong here. Love it!

Very bad food, my stomach wasn't great after the food

The place is really cute with great outside seating! Awesome presentation of the meal as well! However my dining experience wasn't the best and I would have been okay with the fact that my server forgot my horchata and did not check on me the whole time I was eating to see if I had it, or needed hot sauce or anything else, but it affected me negatively because when I shared with him that I did not get my horchata and he could remove it from the bill and don't worry about it, he blamed it on it being busy and as I looked around everyone had drinks coming but me but there were only 5 people in house!

However, the food was good and I do believe there could be a better experience. Maybe his head was just gone that day... we all have bad days.

But, try it out! Because it was a cute spot, just being honest about my experience.

The five stars are for the food and the prices. Really can’t be beat. Under $5 for a fantastic Cuban sandwich and $1.50 for a small Cuban coffee. Could be cleaner and updated inside but thats not what this place is trying to be. Its like an old school diner inside. Great cheap breakfast, lunch or dinner. Daily specials and most meats are slow cooked. The added photo gives one an idea of how many sandwiches have been cut in half over the years. There are lots of Cuban sandwiches in UC. I think this one is the best.

Just love it! Me and my wife had a amaizing dinner here tonight. Food was amaizing and Staff very friendly. As a chef i totally recomend that restaurant. I would give more than five stars . Hope to dine in again. Portion are huge you not going to come back home hungry 🙂 Thank You Guys and keep it going 👌👏

Great place for quality inexpensive Cuban eats. Found this place on a whim while driving through the area. Municipal lot with meter parking behind and on street ($0.25/hr). Service was fast and the food was fresh. Entrees were a great price with just the right portion size, but definitely go for the sandwiches and empanadas! The waitress didn't speak much English to us but definitely understood everything we said. Would come back again if I'm in the area.

We love it! I got birria beef tacos, and the birria quesadilla and shrimp al pastor( we were 2 people, and starving) didn't disappoint, table outside , drinking margaritas and enjoying the night.higly recommended for a night out.Nathan was our server for the night, and we was fantastic!

Pretty simple restaurant with good food , huge portions and very convenient prices. Definitely my go to spot for a lunch when I’m around the area . Atmosphere is very simple , environment is clean and staff is quick .

This place is great! I prefer to come here than noches de Colombia. There prices are far better and you can order a baby churrasco with rice and beans and yucca for 12$ so yes visit. The big churrasco for two is 24$ a steal! They also have 7$ plates that are comforting and filling. Support your local businesses. Visit these folks good hard working people

Really friendly staff from the moment you walk in, we had the chicken, rice and beans with some empanadas and it was all delicious! Great food in a friendly local neighbourhood area. Two full dishes and two sides less than $25. Highly recommend

I've passed by this place so many times and today we decided to stop and grab a bite to eat. WOW.. I have to say go and try it. Small place but huge on flavor. The service is amazing too. We sat outside because we had our dog with us. As soon as the waitress came to take our order she asked if we wanted water for our dog. I was surprised and thankful. I felt I was at a restaurant in Hoboken or in the city where almost every place is pet friendly. The food is excellent and the margarita was awesome. We are definitely coming back to this place and I highly recommend this place. A hidden gem in Union City. Who would have known?

Small place with great food at a good price. If you need something all you have to do is ask and they would be happy to serve you. A wonderful place with a great Churrasco (skirt steak), and tostones made to order. I always visit when passing by.
