Top Cafeterias in Berlin, Germany

Some people are so eager to experience the sepulchral minimalism of the David Chipperfield brand that they won’t make a fuss about paying top Euro for some of the most tasteless, crushingly soulless, unappetizing, gray-tasting food you can imagine. That’s not me.
This place makes you want to subscribe to the slightly populistic adage that some architectural firms care more about their design than the experiences of people living in them.
The entire concept of a short menu that the Kantine follows religiously would be acceptable if the food and produce selection was any good.
We went for lunch, and we were offered only one option out of three because “we didn’t book in advance”. What we were allowed to order was, alas, a simplistic salad, composed of plasticky lettuce leaves, unsalted and unseasoned chopped mushrooms, a cold and mushy cauliflower perparation, and a handful of gray and black beans that looked like river gravel.
One could rationalize the experience by appreciating the consistency between the Chipperfieldian concrete slabs and the grey mediocrity of the food.
In other words, if Chipperfield’s architecture had a signature dish, it would be that salad. That’s the conceptual reason why I’m giving this two stars instead of one.
Avoid this place unless you are interested in a surreal Berlin Hyper-Mitte experience, which includes watching people trying to blend in the artificial, culturally disassociative, and classist scenario like disembodied 2D-figures in an architectural rendering.
The only consolation is to be found in the schadenfreude of knowing that David Chipperfield himself is said to live inside this urban concrete hellscape.
The only salvation, on the other hand, is the work the firm’s doing with urban restorations.
Go experience that instead and don’t eat their gravel salad.

Dort war es mal richtig gut, mittlerweile überhaupt nicht mehr. Ich hatte Bratwurst mit Kartoffelpüree und Sauerkraut für 8,30 € (!), meine Kollegin Glasnudelsalat für 7,50 €. Viel zu teuer für eine Kantine und die wirklich miese Qualität.

The food is quite light, simple, and healthy, which can be quite nice, but I had a salad and the lettuces were not washed very well and still a little gritty. Food was not exciting, somewhat plain, but doesn’t weigh you down, which is sometimes what you look for in the summer. I love the little courtyard to sit, though, it’s a good atmosphere

The restricted menu concept can be terrific. It's good here too, but it could be next level. At the next level, the dishes are just slightly more evolved; deeper stocks, interesting twists, and a rare ingredient here or there. I like this place and our meal was good. The service is really terrific, and the chefs are proud. Take a breath, guys, and tweak things up a notch... Have fun with it.

Essen ist Mittelmaß aber bitte dann nicht so mit den Portionen geizen das man nicht mal satt wird.

Immer leckere Gerichte für einen kleinen Preis

13€ für einen halb vollen Teller überkochte Gnocchi mit ein paar Blub's Spinat bei Selbstbedienung! Das ist schon ein krasses Preis-Leistungsverhältnis für die "Kantine" eines sozialkritischen Theaterhauses.

Theater-Mitarbeiter*innen zahlen ca. die Hälfte. Mir scheint, man finanziert hier das Personal-Essen, egal wie man bei Kasse ist.

Brecht hätte wohl dazu gesagt:
"Und weil der Mensch ein Mensch ist,
drum braucht es was zum essen bitte sehr,
ich stopf mir jetzt 'nen Klimatöter-Döner rein,
denn mehr gibt mein Proll-Portmoney nicht her..." :-)

Als langjähriger Gast muss ich sagen: schade, wie Ihr Euch entwickelt habt. Ok, es wird überall teurer. Aber Ihr überzieht. Lieblos angerichtete Hackfleischnudelkombi für 13 Euro? No way! Dazu unfreundlicher bis nicht vorhandener Service.

I visited this amazing Kantine just for curiousity about architecture. And then, I found that actually this restaurant was lovely in and of itself!
Chef was really gentle and professional. Staffs were treat me as the best as well :)
Foods were also awesome and prices are reasonable!

Die Kantine befindet sich im Innenhof des Theaters. Es gibt täglich drei Hauptgerichten, eines davon ist vegetarisch. Außerdem werden zwei Suppen und Desserts angeboten.

Die Kantine bietet einen Mittagstisch an und ist im Rahmen des Theaterprogramms ebenfalls geöffnet.

Ein sehr unterstützungswürdiges Projekt. Sehr leckeres Essen mit sehr netten Personal und freundlicher Atmosphäre. Nettes zusammenkommen Menschen verschiedenster Hintergründe.

Nice little surprise, the Kantine is in a hof. We had a table outside and enjoyed the quietness and calming atmosphere. Food taste fresh and good, prices are average for the location. We had the salad and soup. Dishes are around 9-14 euros I believe. I would come back for sure :)

Bester Tipp für das preiswerte Mittagessen. Jeden Tag ein Gericht - manchmal mit Fleischoption (nicht vegan soweit ich weiß). Es kostet nur ein par Euro, und für alle die einen Euro mehr haben zahlen den Soli Preis zur Unterstützung. Setzt euch nach hinten raus in den Garten.
Besser kann die preiswerte Pause nicht laufen.

Ich war mit dem Essen dort sehr zufrieden; wie der Name schon sagt, handelt es sich um eine Betries- bzw. BehördeKantine. Ich denke, es ist "Hausmannskost" und für den eiligen Gast gibt's täglich Curry Wurst mit Pommes. Gekühlte Getränke gibt's aus dem Kühlgerät. Speiseeis zum Nachtisch ebenfalls aus entspr. Kühltruhe. Man sitzt recht großzügig, oft auch an Fensterplätzen zum Rausschauen. Ich war mit allem sehr zufrieden.

Günstig und gute Qualität auch für externe Besucher. Toll zur Mittagspause oder später am Abend.

Ich liebe das Essen und die Stimmung an dem Ort!! Absolut empfehlenswert, auch abseits eines Theaterbesuchs!

Unglaublich unfreundlicher tätowierter typ mit dreads an der Bar der mich und meine Freunde angemotzt hat, weil ich ein Getränk mit Getränkemarken bestellt habe. Ich wollte doch nur meinen Aperol Spritz trinken.

Nice and cozy environment with self service food and drinks

Liebe Leute, eine Kantine ist eine Kantine ist eine Kantine. Ich kann hier viele Bewertungen nicht verstehen. Wenn ich Schickimicki möchte, muss ich ins Restaurant gehen. Hier gibt es solide Hausmannskost, preisgünstig und schnell. Ich gehe gerne zur Spreekantine, wenn ich im Bezirk bin.

Ich hatte Essen to Go. Pommes waren heiss und knusprig. Die Wurst ebenso schön heiss. Die Sosse war superlecker und etwas scharf, so wie ich es mir vorstelle. Kann ich nur weiterempfehlen! :) Komme garantiert wieder.

Täglich 4 verschiedene Gerichte (mindestens 1 davon vegetarisch) zu Preisen zwischen 3,80 und 7,90 €. Für diesen Preis wird verhältnismäßig gut gekocht, die Qualität ist kantinentypisch, aber in Ordnung. Preis-Leistung stimmt.

Die Kiez-Kantine befindet sich etwas versteckt, den Gang runter auf der linken Seite. Dort gibt es Montag bis Freitag zwischen 12 Uhr und 14 Uhr jeweils ein leckeres Mittagessen. Der Preis liegt zwischen 2 Euro und 4 Euro. Wer mehr zahlt, unterstützt die kostenlose und gesunde Ernährung von bedürftigen Kindern aus der Nachbarschaft.

Wir waren mit einer Gruppe von 10 Personen da. Es gab eine Auswahl von 3 Hauptgerichten. Die Ausgabe des Essens war zügig. Der Preis war okay.
Alle waren zufrieden. Übereinstimmend war man der Meinung, der Hackbraten hätte am besten geschmeckt.

Good food & very nice staff

Small design pearl in the heart of Mitte! The food is typical German food, portions are big! Great taste!
The service is pretty friendly and very fast. They don’t have a lot of seats inside so if you don’t wanna wait, you can reserve. Credit cards are accepted.

This is basically a soup house for poor people. You can also donate money. They offer food at non profit rates. It's simple and feels like homemade. Everyday, there are only 1 or 2 items on the menu. But, the menu is mostly unique with rare repetition.

Sehr gutes Essen zum angemessenen Preis.

Preis leicht höher als andere Kantinen (ca. 50 Cent), aber dafür sehr große Portionen lecker zubereitet und abwechlungsreich.

Natürlich immer noch ein Schnäppchen gegenüber Restaurants...

Sehr sauber und gemütlich, aber Toiletten sucht man dort vergebens in der Kantine...

Das ist auch der einzige Kritikpunkt, insbesondere behinderte Menschen dürften sich aber über den leichten Zugang im Erdgeschoss von der Straße freuen.

Glatte Empfehlung, aber wegen unmittelbar zugänglich fehlenden Toiletten kann man da leider keine vier oder fünf Sterne geben und drei sind ein Zugeständnis an das sehr gute Essen...
