Saint Germain Bakery
2023 Feb 20
The popular bakery has just recently opened one more location, this one on W41st Ave. in the heart of Kerrisdale. Here you will find a wide assortment of sweet and savoury breads, delectable egg or cheese tarts, and cakes, but also available are several frozen options for you to finish baking at home. As well, this shop has added a few drinks (hot & cold), and a small seating area in case you decide not to wait and eat your purchase right there. The quality of their products has been a constant, and their prices very reasonable, these are the reasons why the chain has been so successful. Recommend!
Sweet Obsession
2022 Oct 18
Needing to pick up a cake to celebrate a birthday, we decided to come to Sweet Obsession and check what they had available. Our first option was the Mocha Torte, spongy and chocolatey. Unfortunately, sold out so we went with the Tiramisu cake instead. This was a good call, all the goodness of espresso and mascarpone cream! Looking at the variety of cakes, cheesecakes, cookies and other baked items, we had to stop for coffee and try something... settled for a cappuccino and a Dipped Shortbread Cookie. This was amazing, the chocolate/shortbread combination rich and flavourful! Next time, a Palmier? Or a Pain au Chocolat? Or an Apple Cranberry Crostata?... Come to Sweet Obsession and sit down, take your time and have a coffee the way it's meant to be enjoyed: calmly... Service here was friendly, prices reasonable.
Faubourg
2022 Feb 22
Visited their W41st Ave. location in Kerrisdale expecting to be impressed. The place was busy, and the staff there were shorthanded. Faubourg is affected by the very common problem in Vancouver, not enough people interested in working in the restaurant industry... Despite being super busy, staff were diligent and explained that drinks in particular, might take a few minutes to be prepared. No problem there. Ordered a Nutella filled crêpe, a couple of macarons, and a double baked pistachio chocolate croissant. In general, the 3 were ok, but not spectacular. The croissant in particular, probably better when recently baked, but by mid day just ordinary, and therefore not worth the price in my opinion. Will have to give their other specialties a try. The cakes, tarts and savoury treats look great, and I'm really hoping that the experience will be more exciting...
The name choice (Deer Island Bakery) is interesting. Honestly, we have visited the place many times, however, only when I took pictures found out what the name was. Point is, the name is irrelevant. This bakery on W51st Ave. in Kerrisdale has been around several years and it continues to attract a steady, and loyal, clientele. The place is relatively small but well organized, with fridges for cakes, and shelves with the different baked goods they offer, among these: cookies, pastries, buns with sweet & savoury fillings, loafs of bread, all fresh! If you like egg tarts, don't miss the opportunity to get some! The flaky cup and mildly sweet egg top an awesome combination! Their prices are pretty decent, and their service is diligent and courteous. Bring your face mask, apply hand sanitizer (provided at point of entry) and enjoy!
If you are looking for ethnic foods, this is a very good option in the heart of Kitsilano. Other offerings include fresh produce, a frozen foods section & bulk items (grains, nuts, etc.). They also have a prepared foods section with some vietnamese dishes like banh-mi, phô, and spring rolls. Social distancing is allowing in-store shopping, sanitizing lotion is also offered. Feel safe and shop comfortably...
