Pratapeshwar Temple
2024 Feb 06
This temple is believed to have been constructed in the early-mid 19th century.
The Pratapeshwar Temple is the last of the significant monuments at Khajuraho. It was established in the early to mid 19th century by Pratap Singh, the second Raja of the Chhatarpur princely state, which thrived under the British Raj. Despite its prominent location, the structure seldom appears in Khajuraho guidebooks, probably because the monument may simply have been intended as a memorial to Pratap Singh himself, who fancied himself as a stalwart of Khajuraho's architectural heritage.
The monument was sealed in 1956 per the States Reorganization Act and the central government refused to fund its protection, and the monument did not receive the same official recognition as other Khajuraho properties.
In 2016, the Archaeological Survey of India took over the property and reopened it to visitors.
Although the site does not bear much resemblance to the rest Khajuraho's western group of temples, historians stress that it possesses a certain charm, particularly in contradiction to the profusely ornamented and sculpture-laden temples in its neighbourhood.
Panch Mahal
2023 Dec 24
The Panch Mahal meaning 'Five level Palace' was commissioned by Akbar. This structure stands close to the Zenana. It is believed to have been used for entertainment and relaxation.
It consists of four storeys asymetrically constructed above a ground floor.
The ground floor has 84 columns, the first storey has 56 columns and the second and third storeys have 20 and 12 columns respectively. The topmost storeyy has 4 columns supporting a chhattri. There are 176 columns in all and each is elegantly carved pillars with unique designs.
The columns are believed to have been connected through perforated screens (jaalis). These screens provided purdah (cover) to queens and princess on the top terraces enjoying the cool breeze and watching splendid views of Sikri town nestling at the foot of the ridge.
This group of temples, (at least those that survive today), was believed to have been constructed during the period from 970 - 1030 AD by the rulers of the Chandela Dynasty.
They are well-maintained and laid out in a well-landscaped area with a lot of greenery and flowering plants and trees.
Many of the temples have intricate sculptures of intimate scenes. The precision and degree of detail have to be seen to be believed.
There are about 12 surviving temples in the complex, none of which is functioning as a place of religious worship today.
Faujdar Tea Stall
2023 Dec 19
I am a tea-lover and without a doubt, the tea here rates very high on my agenda. I've had varieties of tea all over the country in several climes, and this is right up there with the best.
Tea her in Agra, in several places that I've had, is sweeter than I've had elsewhere.
The tea here is served, as in most of Agra, in kulhads (small earthen containers), that carry a hint of the flavour of the clay it is made from, which adds to the flavour of the tea.
Taj Nature Walk
2023 Dec 19
A fairly nice and pleasant walk through a well laid-out walkway, with a lot of greenery, trees, flowering shrubs, flowerbeds, and nicely landscaped lawns.
There are play areas with equipment like swings, slides, exercise equipment etc.
A few areas have been designated for picnics.
One should be careful not to stumble upon unsuspecting couples spending some quality time together.
The Taj Mahal is visible from a couple of vantage points.
