Tuome
2024 Jan 11
Tuome seems like someone tried to open a nice European restaurant but they couldn't stop eating at, and being influenced by, all of the amazing Asian restaurants in the East Village, Lower East Side, and China Town.

The result is an intimate setting where you can have deep convos with old friends and dates without the usual racket of most NYC restaurants, and without the overly stuffy atmosphere found at some Michelin starred places.

While bonding with your dining partner, and sipping wine from a beautifully curated American and European wine list, you get to dine on some of the best dishes from... uh ... China??

Well yeah but not exactly. I hate to say "fusion" but that's what this is -- fusion of minds, bellies, and fusion of thoughts that NYC is maybe the best dining city in the world.

The snow crab noodles (come for the crab stay for the noodles!) is not to be missed. Get the "Pig Out" as well -- little squares of perfectly rendered pork belly -- crispy and unctuous. Splurge on a wine from the Northern Rhône and drift off to contented bliss.
Red Hook Tavern
2023 Dec 02
We continue the journey of "bangers only". Tucking into the Red Hook Tavern on a rainy Friday night after a week solo on the road, I was instantly flooded with warm, welcoming feelings -- reconnecting with "my people" -- those with a love of the extraordinary and simple.

A classic burger, a glass of red, a cozy room, and a comfortable chair, I suddenly felt "home" and left full of both good food and good spirits.

This is the best pub burger I've ever had. The dry aged patty is the star: juicy and packing enough beefy flavor to instantly cause my eyes to roll back in my head. The griddled bun, the American cheese try as they might to steal the show, end up in perfect support.

A fairy tale experience for this weary traveller.

Van Brunt St in Brooklyn is a nostalgic force to be reckoned with.
