Alright, get ready for the longest review I've ever written! We drove through some very dense DC fog to celebrate our anniversary here on a Thursday night, and it was 100% worth it.
Service: Nemi (hope I'm spelling that right) was our server, and she took wonderful care of us. She, along with the rest of the staff, did a great job with describing our dishes, presentation, and allowing us our privacy as we celebrated.
Food: The 5 course meal was delicious! Starting with their in-house bread and butter that was absolutely heavenly! The entire upstairs smelled like freshly baked bread and it was both comforting and inviting. We both ordered the squash blossom rangoons, and were given a complimentary lychee and pork salad to share. This salad is a dish they are known for and for good reason! The coconut foam brought out every flavor profile from the mint to the onion and the pork and lychee... and we are still talking about it 4 days later. After the salad we got our pasta dishes. My husband ordered the spicy vodka pasta and I got the lemon butter pasta... let me tell you, I wanted to jump into that dish and swim in the buttery, Meyer Lemon goodness. Totally melted in my mouth, and my husband's dish was the perfect blend of spicy and creamy (we shared!). As we finished sipping on our cocktails (the spicy margarita and the peach bourbon situation), our server surprisingly brought out some bubbly for us! "It pairs well with the lobster, and you can never go wrong with some bubbly for your anniversary!" And she was right! At this point I was already beginning to feel full, but when the poached lobster came out, my mouth began to water AGAIN. It was soft, buttery, and topped with a mixture of sweet and savory (mango! peppers!) that complimented the well seasoned lobster without overwhelming it. Once we took our last bite, we were pleasantly stuffed and chatted for a few minutes before we were given a sample of their cinnamon toast crunch ice cream. I am not a fan of ice cream, but this may have converted me. It was not overly sweet or dense, and it really did taste like the cereal without the soggy part. I would totally eat an entire pint of this by myself. Now, you'd think we finish here but wait, THERE'S MORE! More Dessert! I saw there was a tres leches on their menu, and we had to order it. I'm Mexican and use my grandmother's recipe for every tres leches cake I've ever made, so the dessert holds a special place in my heart and stomach. Rose's Tres Leches is not my abuela's dessert, but it is uniquely in a category of its own. The portion size is, as their menu states, ridiculously over sized! More than enough for 2, and somehow not enough because it is that good. It is light, lightly caramely, and has just the right balance of being moist without turning into mush. There was a subtle taste of spices used and the way that the sweet coconut flavor still lingers after each bite was so inviting that I was sad when we finished it.
Overall: the food is 10/10, service is 10/10, and bonus 10/10 for playing late 90s early 00s r&b (at least while we were there). Highly recommend and we will definitely be back!
