NYC Engraving Service
2020 Aug 13
I was very disappointed by this service. I needed an engraving done on a wooden plaque from an 18th century painting--the writing on the plaque faded over time--, and was impressed by the many positive reviews for NYC Engraving Service. I had an appointment at 2:30pm today. An employee from the company (maybe the owner?) met me in the lobby, and I provided him with a photo of the original plaque, the specific font I wanted used on the plaque, and I also typed out the exact text I wanted engraved on the plaque. After around 45 mins of waiting, he returned with the plaque. I was initially pleased with the result, and was about to pay. I then noticed an error--the plaque was supposed to have two dates, 1734 and 1806, but instead it had 1734 written twice. I noticed that the second 1734 (which was supposed to say 1806) looked smudged, because whoever did the engraving must have attempted to write 1806 over it. As soon as I pointed this out, the employee began to insist that it was MY error. He showed me the "note" that I had written, and it said 1734 twice. I noticed that the note he showed me was written at 3:17pm...it was currently 3:20pm. It was clear someone had gone back and changed the note I wrote. Furthermore, the photo I provided of the original should have been enough to correctly engrave the plaque. The employee agreed not to charge me, but did not apologize for the error nor the dishonesty. In fact, he said I could just "bring a new plaque" to be engraved, as if the 18th century plaque was not valuable and one of a kind.
