Blue Mash Golf Course
2020 Oct 19
Comfortably the best condition public course in the DMV. A joy to play with the fall colors in the backdrop on a beautiful Sunday for golf.

Pros
- Greens are fantastic, they’ll hold a ball and run fast and true
- The layout is enjoyable for folks who don’t boom it off the tee, lots of short par 4s to make you think but there are some challenging holes too - 11 is a tough par 3
- The price point of $79 for a twilight round is great value for the quality of this track. Appreciate the electric carts w/GPS too.

Cons
- Pace of play was slow, took 4h40m & we finished in darkness. Didn’t see a marshal all day; would recommend they do a better job at tee time spacing or have a proactive marshal working weekends.

Overall this is easily one of the best courses in the area, Worthington probably more challenging for a low single digit player but you’d have some fun here even if you are a low handicapper.
Overpriced and inconsistent.

Pros
- Close to DC
- Some nicely laid out holes
- Greens are slow but in nice shape

Cons
- Woeful condition fairways, rough and tee boxes
- Slow 5hr rounds with zero policing by marshals
- The 6th is an absolute abortion of a hole; 200 yards carry with a pot bunker guarding the front with woods behind it at 230? That ain’t fun.

There’s far better value for your ~$80 out there.
PB Dye Golf Club
2020 Aug 16
Delighted to be able to post this edit; played PB Dye recently and what a contrast to my review below; the course is in phenomenal shape and is a testament to Chris and his green keeping team. Greens are super fast but run true. Enjoyed my round a lot here, fairways a pleasure to strike from (when we hit them) and the pace of play was good throughout (~4hrs for the round). Highly, highly recommend.

I really wanted to love this course, but ultimately it’s just not in good condition with respect to its peers.

Pros

- Friendly staff

- Greens in good shape, a touch soft and slow which helps given their tricky design

- Some nice holes, 5 is a players hole, 11 is a short par 3 pleasing on the eye, a short par 4 like 10 will always get my vote

Cons

- Fairways and tee boxes are in fairly atrocious condition (see photo). I know we’ve had rain, but this is by a distance in the worst shape out of similar nearby courses (Worthington, Whiskey Creek). There are signs that management are aware so hopefully they’re working on something.

- Pace of play was pretty tragic at times, we got rushed into starting 10 mins early and then had instances of 15 minute tee box waits on 2 separate occasions

- Somewhat tied to the above, this course is too difficult for beginners, of which they have a lot on the course. The $55-70 green fees no doubt precipitate this; it’s probably good value for a beginner but poor value for an intermediate/advanced golfer.

Overall; the layout is good, some great holes. The condition is very poor in spots however and it detracts from the course. I’d recommend management spend less money on ClubCar Tiempos and pay more attention to the course.

**Edit**

The course superintendent reached out directly to me & gave a very thorough breakdown of the challenges this summers weather has presented. It seems the course has been a victim of some localized extreme weather that has had severe impacts on the ability to regenerate & rehab a lot of the turf. I wish Chris & team well in their efforts to combat & reverse the impact of the weather.
