Awesome, no-frills gym; some older equipment but is very well maintained with everything you may need (weights, cardio machines, fleet of spin bikes, mirrored studio, lap lane pool). Super affordable with a variety of classes included or for a minimal additional cost. The staff are friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. The front desk is very responsive to any needs, can help you enroll in classes (or you can do it yourself online), provide water / sports drinks (at cost), and answer questions. It's a great neighborhood gym with a lot of long-term loyal members
This beautiful, historic church is home to an open, talented, academic- and mission-oriented community.
Inclusive: This congregation believes that we are ALL welcome in God's house, and demonstrates a positive culture in their various groups like fpcQ (the LGBTQ group), T&T (Twenties & Thirties), Women of Wit & Wisdom, Young Families (including a separate Children's Service), The Racial Equity Task Force, the Anti-Gun Violence Committee, groups for retirees, and many more. In addition, the leaders (pastors, musicians, administrative staff, committee leads) of this church come from diverse backgrounds, further underpinning the importance of diversity, inclusion, intersectionality, empathy in our faith.
Educational: Through various bible studies, book groups, speaker sessions, and academic discussions (as well as the weekly sermons, of course), the leaders of this church (many of whom are active in higher education) bring important context to the Living Word, ensuring that every congregant is well equipped to understand the text. Lively discussion and thoughtful debate are encouraged, and the syllabus is constantly evolving to reflect the important world and local events which can inform our spirituality.
Mission-Driven: Some very-well respected charitable institutions started in partnership with our church. The church collaborates with local and international groups, volunteers in community building and environmental efforts, and has a keen focus on uplifting and advocating marginalized communities.
Beautiful: The 200 year old building sparkles with stunning stained glass and gorgeous architecture. The impressive organ is helmed by our world-renowned (seriously, they travel the world) organist and professional choir. Fresh flowers from a local florist adorn the sanctuary every week. During special occasions (holy holidays, weddings, community events, etc.), the leaders always find creative ways to make the atmosphere extra special
Innovative: Despite this being an old institution, First Pres has displayed innovation throughout the pandemic by updating the service with live streams in order to accommodate members who are unable or uncomfortable with in person attendance (this video and audio feature will continue on even as pandemic restrictions are relaxed). The church is in a constant state of growth and self-reflection as it continues to meet the needs of its members and visitors
The ONE negative thing that can be said about the church is that there is no air conditioning in the main sanctuary. However, during these times, worship is generally moved to the the fellowship hall, which has air conditioning.
Would highly recommend attending this church for all of your faith and community needs!
