Penang Flavours
2024 Aug 14
A popular place for Malaysian cuisine. It has a great combination of delicious food at a reasonable price, efficient and friendly service, a clean and bright environment. Highly recommend the fried fish head vermicelli in milky broth. The broth flavour is gentle but satisfying. The fried fish head is, oh so crispy! Pair it with some fresh red cut chilli and it brings the gastronomic experience to the next level. Try also the Penang Fried Kway Teow and Char Tang Hoon.
We ordered the Pad See Ew and Curry fried fish fillet. The Pad See Ew had good flavour but lacked the charred smokiness from a hot wok toss (Wok-Hei). The curry fried fish fillet was good though. Flavoursome curry drizzled on a beautifully piece of fish.
Star Turn

This place has an inconspicuous entrance. However, once you enter through the dark glass door, it opens up into a spacious and comfortable cafe. The service is prompt and friendly. Where it falls short is the food. While the menu reads interesting and the food presentation looks promising, the actual taste is less exciting. We ordered the drink iced strawberry latte and balance was off. The bitter edge of the coffee was in direct collision with the fresh tart taste of the strawberry. The Thai Basil Chicken rice bowl was alright. The Kimchi fried rice had many elements to it but the rice was bland and there was no roast pork as indicated in the menu and was replaced by half a slice of bacon. The fried lotus root slices were limp and unpleasant to eat.
Borobudur Temple

I enjoyed the experience. The visit and tour of the temple was orderly and well organised. But a ticket based on either local or foreigner rate and you’ll then enter to exchange your shoes for a pair of straw slippers to put on during the entire visit. You’ll be given a bag to store and carry your shoes with you. You’’ll also be given a small bottle of mineral water. The visitors are divided into smaller groups of 10-15 to be taken on a tour by a guide that speaks your language. You will be given a card with your group number. Go to the waiting hall and wait for your group number to be announced to start the tour. Our tour was 3 pm. Be warned - carry a fan, wear a hat, tie up long hair, bring water (the small complimentary bottle is not enough), wear sunscreen. IT WAS HOT AND THE CLIMB IS STEEP. So, if you have knee or mobility issues, this will be a challenge. But the getting to the top makes it worth it with spectacular views. The way out is a long maze of getting through souvenir stalls. I feel sorry for the stall holders as it was so hot. If you can, do stop and buy something, to make their time worthwhile.
