Strikes a very good balance between conservation and entertainment.
The zoo is within walking distance of the CBD, and it's an enjoyable walk through the suburbs. It's also well served via the tram network. Very friendly staff and well laid out with a tremendous amount to see. It's a great day out for old and young, with plenty of toilets and places to eat and drink. I visited out of season and on a weekday (Monday, July), so it was busy, but far from crowded).
Modern zoos have a difficult tightrope to balance between entertainment and conservation and Melbourne's Zoo does this well. It's great to see animals being well cared for and mostly happy in their confinement, including a couple of baby elephants. The large aviaries are excellent to walk through, yet no so spacious that you end up having to play hunt-the-animal in the enclosures. No zoo will ever be perfect, but this one must be high up on the list of good ones, and ones doing their best to make a difference in terms of education and values in conservation.
The butterfly house is a must visit - tranquil, fragile beauty abounds.

A lovely local pub, full of charm, excellent beers and some great clientele.
Oh - and a brilliant selection of board games.
The maths board tickled me, for many Uni maths students frequent the place and it's obviously their pub challenge.
The fireplace snug is also a rarity. This was lovely to see, as floorspace is easily reclaimed by gaming machines, thankfully absent. I wonder if this space will be fully occupied in the winter to come, what with energy prices on the up and up.
If not, come and keep your local pub warm (and open) - they need you!

Paddle boarding = wibbly wobbly fun.
Went paddle boarding with the family as a birthday present and we were all absolute beginners. Our instructor, Lexy, was very experienced, calm and reassuring while a bunch of noobs floundered around, but under her expert guidance we increased our confidence and were soon standing up and practicing.
Though a little nervous at first, we really started to enjoy it and how time flew. Personally, I was a bit wary of plunging into the frigid waters of the docks, but need not have worried as the temperature was almost lukewarm (in mitigation, this was written on the last day of July, following a bout of sunshine and hot weather).
I'd highly recommend this as and we all ended the session beaming.

Good beer and good food.
It's always a pleasure to call in and even more so when there's good food on offer to surprise you.
We thoroughly enjoyed a some jerk dishes and the jerk chicken was really lovely.

It's an office block, with one business on one floor and another on another.
I'd not recommended bringing your kids here for a day trip, let's just say.
