Sunday 5th Feb 2023. After days of great burgers, omelette with emmental cheese-ham, dim sum, bimbimbap, crepe suzette, mex-tex, korean hotpot, le phos, vietnamese drip coffee, Florence and I walked into ROJBAS GRILL at junction of University Ave/ Martin LutherKing Jr.Ave - a small simple 18- seater Kurdish/ Med it said.
But just what to order for two persons? Light one & we agreed to share.
We ordered an eggplant humus w crispy pita ($6.95). and chicken skewers with salad n yellow rice and yogurt ($15.95) and small thick cuppa turkish coffee.($3.45)
First of all there are only 3 persons running the eatery, Only one speaks English, that's Burhan and two in kitchen called Rostu & Adam who don't. These are the two cooks who also serves. Rostu smiles a lot. All 3 were Kurdish and so i knew it was going to be genuine fare. Because, you see i have this silly theory that food must be done by the original cast, for e.g. good dimsum must be done by cantonese and spicy curries by southern indians. Silly but works for me most of the time.
This time i was right again The pittas came first, hot crispy on edges and chewy in centre, dipped in the eggplant humus twas so good and i had to resist mopping all up until the grilled chicken skewers came. Verdict? Very good.
By the way Burhan told me ROJBAS means "good day" in Kurdish and his name means "proof" as in proof of a blessed person in the Quran. Do go! its at a corner unit next to Traders Joe .
