We decided to come here instead of the aquarium and were pleasantly surprised. The main exhibit has an eclectic collection of butterflies, beetles, shellfish, taxidermy, and dioramas. The microscope projector is excellent and there are plenty of interactive, touchable pieces to keep kids engaged.
Great location above the valley, and it's free. But you're close to a road where people show up in the middle of the night to party in a turn out. I didn't get a peaceful stay.
A big castle worth the visit.
Climbing up the castle's hill can be hectic with steep hills and traffic. Once you pay the admission price, which is reasonable for European castles, you'll be rewarded with scenic plazas shaded by old pines. It's a reprieve from the heat and tourist hubbub below. The inside is quite different from the outside. There's a kiosk cafe and restaurant with great views onto Lisbon. And of course the castle's walls are fully walkable, which a treat.
