Sumida River Walk
2023 Mar 23
Until recently, the 東武花川戸鉄道橋 Tobu Hanakawado Railway Bridge was for trains only. No pedestrians.
However, sometime during the pandemic, a pedestrian walkway was added to the bridge. There is even a section of glass floor along the walkway. A bit noisy when a train is leaving or arriving at the Tobu Asakusa Station.
On the East side of the Sumida River, there are a couple of blocks of new establishments under the train tracks. The Naruto Beya Sumo Stables are located along this new development.
Tokyo Mizumachi
2023 Mar 23
東京ミズマチ Tokyo Mizumachi [Water Road] is a two block or so development under the Tobu Rail Line connected to the West side of the Sumida River by the new Sumida River Walk Pedestrian Bridge attached to the Tobu Rail Bridge.
A very modern feel to the eating establishments and other shops along the development. The Naruto Beya Grand Sumo Stables are located at the Eastern end of the shopping street. They even have a sumo themed drinks machine in front of the stable.
Cleveland's University Circle neighborhood hosts a host of first class museums and the Western Reserve Historical Society is one of them.
The museum houses an eclectic collection of objects about, made in or sometimes just owned by prominent Clevelanders of yore.
The museum assembles exhibits that change not infrequently. When I visited, the Women in Politics display was featured as well as Amanda Wicker-Black Fashion Design in Cleveland.
This summer they are featuring jazz performances in Thursday evenings, in the central garden court if the weather permits. Evelyn Wright put on a well attended performance on 10 June 2021.
The model Terminal Tower is a beautifully crafted piece of furniture. They have a two story tall illuminated Cleveland Indian batting in the entrance hall.
There is a grand statue of Commodore Perry that is sure to inspire patriotic pride in the victor of the Battle of Lake Erie.
The gondola from the Goodyear blimp.
Hope Memorial Bridge
2021 Jun 08
I love bridges (bias disclaimer).
The Hope Memorial Bridge and Viaducts span the Cuyahoga River Valley with a half mile viaduct on the East side of the river (from Ontario Road) and a third of a mile viaduct on the West side of the River (from W. 20th Street).
The bridge has iconic abutments. The four prominent supports sport the carved stone images of the Guardians of Traffic by sculptor, Henry Hering Frank Walker (architect).
The bridge has broad walkways on both sides of the bridge that afford wonderful views of the river valley.
There is a garden at the east end of the viaduct (North West corner of Ontario & Carnegie Avenues). The garden hosts a trio of elephants promoting the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
I am adding some pictures taken from W. 3rd Street in the Flats.
Society For Savings
2021 May 23
The Old Society Savings Bank (now Key Bank) has a nice bas relief (a pair of lions) over the entrance and a beautiful street lamp at the corner of the building joined to it with iron work ivy. It is on my list to come down here early some morning to photograph it while it is lit.
