The DuPont metro station is right in the DuPont circle area of Washington DC. The station has 2 exits. The Q street that takes you north of the DuPont circle. The north exit takes you to Downtown DC. The metro has one of the highest escalators I have seen.

You station is ion the Red Lines which has Shady Grove at one end and Glenmont at the other.

This is a large, very well kept, clean station. Plenty of helpful signs and directions. You can load the SmartTrip on the phone and use it for entry and exit.

The station gets quite busy in the mornings. For some reason I have never seen it busy in the evenings.
There was quite a bit of construction going on. The building was build on top of ancient Tenochtitlan buildings but have been sinking into the stilt. A lot of engineering going on to prevent the building from toppling over.

The cathedral was built in sections from 1573 to 1813[3] around the original church that was constructed soon after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan, eventually replacing it entirely. Spanish architect Claudio de Arciniega planned the construction, drawing inspiration from Gothic cathedrals in Spain.

One can spend hours roaming in the cathedral and appreciating the exquisite work. Also felt a little sad about all history the Spaniards destroyed to build their own.
Old Town Winchester

We went there on the day before Christmas hoping to get a bite to eat. Most of the restaurants were actually closed and so were most of the shops. The area was mostly deserted and it gave an opportunity to experience its old town charm and rustic beauty.

We spend about 30 mins walking up and down the street and enjoyed it immensely. Felt like we had stepped on a Time Machine and traveled back perhaps 30 years.

Plan to go there again when it’s more happening!
Waiola Shave Ice

This is a small shave ice place that also doubles as a store. They have a parking lot next to them where one can conveniently park. A small bench next to the order serves as their sitting area. The store seems popular among the locals as most of the customers were walk-ins.

We ordered their rainbow shave ice, which was decent. Their coffee shave ice not so good. Their vanilla ice cream was good. Very creamy.

Their ice was kind of dense, compared to the more airy, fluffy shave ice in higher end stores.

But overall good and reasonably priced
Rasika West End

Rasika is a high end Indian restaurant in the heart of NW Washington DC. It is also popular with the movers and shakers of country and boasts an impressive “whos who” among its clientele.

The restaurant has patio seating for when the weather is warm. Inside there is a bar where you order drinks and also eat if you so desire. The ambience of the restaurant inside is subdued and sober. A sharp contrast to the typical chatter in restaurants. Maybe too many secrets being shared! But the environment rubbed on us and we found ourselves talking in hushed conspiratorial tones about our commute!

Their Palaka chat was awesome. Deep fried spinach leaves smothered in yogurt, tamarind chutney and a sprinkle of diced tomatoes. I loved it!

We ordered their paneer musallam, something of a speciality. It’s paneer (cottage cheese) stuffed with nuts (I think cashew, walnuts) smothered is tomato, yogurt, cream gravy. Very rich and heavy. A little bland for my palate but I guess they have adapted it to suit the western tastes. The paneer comes with a piece of edible silver foil, which is not uncommon in India (especially for sweets) but not common in America. Our waiter reminded us a couple of times that it is silver and safe to eat. I am guessing they had guests scrapping it away as aluminum foil. These things tend to be expensive.

We also ordered their baigan bharta. A innocuous looking dish that is actually not easy to make. The eggplants are first roasted over charcoal braziers till they are slightly charred and imbibe a smoky aroma. They are then peeled, mashed and cooked in a assortment of spices. The result is a delectable blend of tastes and aromas best eaten with Naan (which is what we did). Enjoyed the dish tremendously!

The prices are not for the faint hearted but worth the experience!
