I absolutely love this place. It's a hidden gem. In the hustle and bustle of York on a Saturday, and at the start of the Christmas markets, we made our way here and arrived just after the opening time at 10. It was fairly quiet then, and we got to look round without any waiting and could spend time looking at the things we wanted, not feeling like we had to hurry up *(Tickets are valid for a year, too) There are some great artefacts to see and I especially loved the 'Yorkshire's prehistoric people' display and the impressive collection of old botany and fossil books in the library.
The gardens, which you walk through part of, to get to the museum are lovely. On exiting the museum, they are worth having a better look round. The edible garden in the grounds will be even more amazing to visit again in spring. In the grounds, you can look around the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, part of which (a huge fireplace) where the monks could briefly warm themselves, is situated inside the museum itself. Food and drinks are available outside the museum in the grounds. It's a lovely breathing space in the city centre, the air changes with all the plants and greenery. It's worth a visit!
