Thai Thai Grocery
2017 Mar 11
First visit, the owner was very friendly and helpful. The second visit, she was very rude. She was busy texting on her phone, hardly offering to look up and giving curt answers. No assistance, no help and condescension to any question I asked even though I was trying to be as nice as possible despite her attitude.

The first visit she said I should come back and she can tell me how to make Tom Yum soup and that she has all the ingredients. So I train all the way out there and she tells me "just use lemongrass, lime leaves, chili peppers and galangal". I ask "how much lemongrass do I use" and she replies "as much as you need". I kept asking for the procedure and she wouldn't offer much of any information just saying those ingredients are all I need. "Dont you also use fish sauce?" and she replies "of course, otherwise no flavor"; so much for helping with the process and ingredients.

After I purchase the ingredients, and her being extremely unhelpful the whole time, she ends with "look up a recipe on the internet".

Her prices are higher than other places. She didn't have fresh galangal, just frozen. For me, I wanted to like this place because of her but the second visit killed it for me. I'd rather go to Bangkok Center Grocery in Chinatown which has everything you need including fresh galangal at a good price or 3 Aunties Thai Market which is on Roosevelt nearer to the Woodside stop (15 min walk from Thai Thai Grocery)

Oh, and the "fried bananas" on the weekend, I asked her "aren't those supposed to be eaten fresh and hot" as they are in Thailand and other parts of SE Asia. She confirmed that is how you should eat them but conceded eating them at room-temperature after they've been sitting around for several hours is normal here.

So altogether you have an owner who is already charging a premium for stuff who is going to potentially be rude and condescending to you if you are interested in Thai food. I don't appreciate being scoffed at for trying to learn (especially after she invited me to come back to do just that). Not interested in playing that game.
