A classic choice for afternoon tea in Edinburgh, at a classy yet modest environment, with a high standard of service offered.
The savoury items were nice. Probably less photogenic than a few other afternoon tea sets available in the city, they were up to the quality we expected, and I particularly liked the pastry with the flavourful haggis.
The desserts were more impressive. There were 3 pieces, less in amount yet bigger in size than the typical tea set. Each item got its own good mix of texture and flavour. By the way, great scones and excellent espresso.

A small café for quality coffee and savory bagels. The specialty coffee they serve is one of the best in Edinburgh, and those we had were bold. We also liked the steak melt and green pesto with chicken bagels a lot - excellently toasted and truly delicious.
Tasteful décor, with home brewing equipment and coffee beans for sale as well. Great place for specialty coffee lovers.

The place is spacious with a nice vintage decor. We ordered a Sunday Roast with three Scottish tapas - cured salmon, Scotch egg and monkfish cheeks. All food was great - the slices of roast sirloin were flavourful and very tender, and we love all the tapas, particularly the gooey egg yolk in Scotch egg. There is a wide range of gin available, though we only had the cocktails and they were excellent. An enjoyable experience!
We visited Artisan Roast at Broughton Street a few times and tried different espresso drinks there, all were great. It is apparent that the baristas are real coffee connoisseur, and funny guys. They offered us complimentary tasting on different occasions, such as a whisky-infused roast (I guess) which was really nice. Artisan Roast has its own roastery and they retail beans from various sources with different roasts. I have been experimenting with my espresso machine using their darker roasts, and to me they are well balanced.
There seems to be an excessive amount of cafe in Edinburgh and not many of them deliverer real quality coffee. Modern Standard Coffee is surely one of the finest I have visited in the city. No mediocre commercial coffee, and they’ve got a own brand of beans (Latin American / African beans) for sale. A two-storey cafe with a simple and cosy environment.
