I love visiting Hillend. If you own a 4wd, drive the Bridle Track from Bathurst. Spend a night or 2 in Hillend then drive to Mudgee for the vineyards. Walk the streets of Hillend, dine at pub, there's several walks you can do around the old mine sites, there is a mine tour but I've never done it. Small museum always open next to bakery(not always open). Camp ground in town with showers and power. Or pub or motel accommodation.

Wonderful collection of medieval artefacts, paintings, tapestries, mostly Christian from Europe. Beautiful building, you'd never guess it was built in the 30's. Located on a hill overlooking Hudson River. On the way uptown stop at St John Divine Cathedral.
