Holt Cemetery
2022 Feb 19
Perhaps my favorite cemetery to have ever visited. As a dedicated taphophile I visit cemeteries all over the country and abroad. Holy, an historically paupers field, is one of the most unique I’ve ever seen. No traditional burial plots, all handmade markers. True creativity in memorial of love on display. It can be a bit dangerous as far as footing goes as it is not maintained at all, but worth the risk of a twisted ankle to see such brilliance and unique monuments. You will see things at Holt Cemetery that you will see nowhere else in the United States. There is also some history of bones and/or fragments rising to the surface adding a bit of creepiness to an already hauntingly beautiful cemetery.
A true hidden gem. We stumbled upon the church looking for cemeteries and I am so glad we did. I have never seen another church with such detailed statues of the Saints and the ceiling was simply breathtaking. I am not Christian and was deeply moved by the atmosphere and incredible art. If you are looking for something to see/do in Boston, it is definitely worth checking out.
