Best Rest stops in Australia

This rest stop is located about an hours drive from Civic Canberra. Drop loos aren't remarkable in any way! There is plenty space for parking cars, small trucks and RV rigs.

Small rest area on the northbound side of the Hume Highway. Facilities include two unisex drop toilets, a couple of picnic benches and non-potable water, and a large grass area. Toilets were clean and well maintained. The exit back to the freeway is a bit dodgy - it’s a 90 degree left hander from a standing start into 110kmh traffic. Sight lines are good but you’ll want to floor it to get back on the road.

Sheltered picnic table & chairs, long drop toilet, basin with tap for handwashing. No potable water. Close to the Hwy, lots of traffic until after 9pm, cars and trucks tend to stop by for a rest or stay overnight, so can be quite noisy. Convenient pull off if heading into Canberra, traffic coming out of Canberra sees this rest area on your RHS meaning come off the Hwy a
& U-turn.

Good place for a stop and use toilet.

Easy spot to give the dog a break. The toilets are long drop and a bit "fresh" but do the job I guess!

If I could give no stars I would this is only for a desperate stop during the day absolutely disgusting and smelly facilities as I found out can't even flush or wash your hands glad hand gel was invented which I used a lot until I found a proper bathroom to wash my hands down the road but when you got to go!! These facilities should be removed!! Such a long drive between Canberra to Sydney so much distance before you get a decent toilet which is unsatisfactory in this day and age

A little small and I guess there would only be 1 possibly 2 spots for an overnight stay.

Hidden behind the trees and not very well signposted, but the biggest, nicest and most useful rest area I have seen on the Remembrance Driveway.

Convenient small rest area just off the highway. Easy to negotiate on and off ramp access. Picnic style tables and shelter, small toilet. Close to the highway so road noise is an issue. OK for a short stop.

Not much here. Toilets stink bad. Avoid if possible.

It's a rest area! Toilets are ók but not super clean. Good place to stretch your legs for a last pitt stop before CBR

A sunny but very cold day on our way to Queanbeyan. Had to stop to check a noise under the car.
Toilets are pit toilets....clean and tidy. Two picnic shelters undergoing work. Area overlooks a wetland with lots of swans and water birds.

Great rest stop along the highway with long-drop public toilets and rubbish bins. Sadly the picnic tables and chairs need a little maintenance / work.

It was decided to attack them with bayonets, and a party consisting of one officer, Corporal Edmondson and five privates, took part in the charge. During the counter-attack Corporal Edmondson was wounded in the neck and stomach, but continued to advance under heavy fire, killing one enemy with his bayonet. Later his officer had his bayonet in one of the enemy and was grasped about the legs by him, when another attacked him from behind. He called for help, and Corporal Edmondson, who was some yards away immediately came to his assistance and in spite of his wounds, killed both of the enemy. This action undoubtedly saved his officer's life. Shortly after returning from this successful counter-attack, Corporal Edmondson died of wounds. His actions throughout the operations were outstanding for resolution, leadership and conspicuous bravery."

John Hurst EDMONDSON was born at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales on 8th October, 1914.
He is buried in the Tobruk War Cemetery, LIBYA

Would happily swing by again to rest up, particularly given the wonderful wetland view.

Another well maintained beautiful rest stop. Lake George very full at the moment.

It's a good place to stop if you need toilets or if you just wanna squiz at the lake, which is fairly full right now...

Great place to stop for a break.
Plenty of parking and possibly free camp for the night if passing through.
Heaps of shaded places away from the main car park.

When we arrived we weren't sure we where in the right place. There was not one person, but doesn't matter. There was a table, so we were under the roof and out of the rain. It was quiet cold. You do hear the cars but not excessively. You will see cute wild bunnies. Toilets no water.

Good place to pull over and have a rest. Servo was under construction the day I visited this place. But you can still fuel up your car. There was also fresh fruit seller. He had good fruit boxes.

Very clean. Enough rubbish bins and good views.

NSW rest areas are well maintained when compared to Victoria

I first thought the cows had gone past some fence. And was wondering who to call. But there is a cattle grid as you drive of the highway. So all good

Nice rest stop. We stayed overnight felt safe and didn't heard highway noise at all!! RAAF memorial Grove is great to wonder around too

Spacious, quiet, and has a toilet. I’ve seen 4-5 cars staying overnight. The lake was beautiful

It is a good stop before arriving to Canberra from Sydney. It has great view and a fantastic spot to take photos.

Easy to get to the little picnic tables if you are able bodied. Wouldn't recommend if you have mobility issues. As there is no easy path to the the tables. Would be hard to push a wheelchair over the grass area with loose rocks and twigs. A walker is possible if you have someone with you to lend a hand.

It is a good spot to take a rest on the drive to Canberra. Restful water views with Coffee available from "The Rest Shed". A few picnic tables with roofs can be used.

Drop toilet. Picnic tables and a bit of shade. Grazing cows nearby are great distraction for kids

I needed a rest break while driving and it was there.
Long drop dunnies. No potable water.
Good benches and tables.
I would not recommend overnighting here but you could tent it near the stock fence or park a car or caravan if you really had to. Don't know how legal that would be, but there is no anti-camping notice

Very pleasant rest stop, it was clean no rubbish lying around. The only thing was the water was undrinkable which they did have a sign saying that which was excellent, although washing your hands were acceptable. There was a food truck there which sold ice cream and probably other food snacks, I did not buy anything there but seen other people there buying ice cream and snacks. Pleasant and lovely experience I had at the rest stop.

Loved this rest stop. Toilets rough but OK for stopping over night.

I was misguided.
A certain round, pink character was absent.
This was not dreamland.
I guess King Dedede or Meta Knight might have a better rest area that is not so misguiding.

Highway rest stops in Australia are mostly poorly kept, arid and devoid of services. This is marginally better but that is not saying much. It does have good views across the dry Lake George and may have a temporary cafe and a tourist info van. Rain water may be available and the toilets may be useable. Do be watchful for snakes and take care of children near vehicles..

"no flash toilets" this may not be suitable for everyone. There are warning sign for snakes.
location is nice and hidden from main road. Good place for a little break and stretching. Few shelter available with branch & table.

It was convenient. It had done memorials to view but nothing fancy. The drop toilet had no water and stank a lot but it was clean so that was good

Gorgeous, peaceful rest area with a toilet and many picnic tables that's far enough off the highway to not hear the roar of cars. Absolutely lovely for a quiet walk through the bush. Lots of blackberries, bunnies and views of Lake George. During autumn the trees paint a kaleidoscope of colours 🍂🍁🌳

Good place to stop for a little walk and do a bit of reading on Raaf. No water or garbage bin but there is one toilet. Very noisy would not spend the night.

Great picnic area with toilet facilities
The views may not be as great as other adjacent picnic or rest areas but you will find this very nice and sometime you will find tea and coffee as well

Great spacious empty place that make me wonder is it possible to set up a cafe or gas station there
