Best Thrift stores in Canada

I asked the cashier what the mission store next door was all about. Well the answer was we don't charge the GST. OK I said but do you know what the store is about? Same answer about the GST and she said that she does not step foot in that store. I have donated a lot to the Salvation Army over the years and I thought that Salvation Army is to help people who are in need but her attitude was not what it should have been.

This Salvation Army is going down the drain, As a new young manager takes over, we learn what it looks like for people who don’t know how to run a business running a business. Not only have I heard multiple other complaints, but I’ve also discriminated against by Newest management I had my canine support in the store, He hadn’t done anything wrong, He was sitting by my side when the management came up and said I cannot have personal dogs in the store. I reminded her because he did not have his patches on that he’s still in training and has been into multiple other stores and just needs the exposure to new smells. On top of that, the manager also made a new policy that if there’s not a price tag on something that you are not allowed to buy it and you must come by the next day, it is not the customers fault that there is no tag on it, especially when they come up to the cash and ask to buy the item and asked for it to be priced. Not only is everything ridiculously overpriced, it’s Not being managed by the right people I used to love going to Salvation Army But I just can’t support the one beside me Is how management is to be. I even asked employee and they said that it’s not even with pay to be better employeess, Do you think if this was the case the manager wouldn’t be making all of these Brutal rules.

I went here with friends earlier, I was looking at some items alone when the owner grabbed my arm suddenly and tightly (which is assault) and hissed at me "these international people think everything is for them!" The remainder of the short time spent in here was extremely uncomfortable, especially since one of my friends i was with is an international student here. Sure, the selection was pretty cool, but its NEVER ok to abruptly and aggressively grab a disabled persons arm as they are trying to shop and say such racist things! I understand that this is a store for those in need and university students can and are very much in need and are in tight financial situations so stores like this are deeply appreciated in the community but not when they're racist.

Such a shame there's still people like this in the day and age we live in.

The best, most fun, treasure hunt! Both Eddie (the dog) and the owner, are super friendly, and cute! I like to visit once a month and always find something to come home with me. Truly an awesome community asset.

No change rooms. Only one week to exchange items and closed on Sundays. Poor selection.

Oh my god I could stay in there for hours. The workers were friendly and the stuff is super cute. I just left and i already want to go back.

This is my go to thrift store. I usually have a positive experience here. I popped in last night after work and see they've been working hard to freshen things up and reorganize. I was chatting with one of the staff and she was so proud of the new improvements. Nice job, everyone. The store is looking great. It's nice to see that they're even making an effort to color block clothing, which I find very helpful.

I dont like being asked at the cash to donate to a vague cause, decline explaining that I already have charitable causes i donate to monthly since 1990, only to have 2 separate charges on my gift card, 1 for the item i bought, and another for the donation i declined to make. She knew what she was doing too, because she crumpled up and discarded the donation receipt. Not cool, my guys, there is a commandment about this eh?

Just a great spot. Cool stuff reasonable prices. Good music vibe, can't recommend enough.

Very poor experience at this particular thrift store. The staff at the front counter had lacked competence and continued to laugh when I had a particular issue about a return. I had attempted to return an item and I was 1 hour and 30 minutes before someone could help me. At the end of it nothing had gotten resolved. I was told I would have to return the next day even after mentioning that this was not at all possible. Very poor experience, would not recommend this particular store to anyone and will never purchase anything here again.

Unless you want to be pay brand new prices for clothes with stains on them, dollarstore decor, and overpriced vintage, don’t shop here. Pathetic prices for a thrift store that gets everything donated to them.

Salvation Army is trash when it comes to helping people. I submitted my application 3 months ago only to find out that Caroline shreded my application. She even gave me a tone of voice and an attitude. I gave them so many calls in the past but to no avail, even sent them multiple voice mails. Don't ask for some help with these people. They're trash when it comes on helping. Worst experience.

i bought electronics for the first time and i asked the guy who serve me “if its not working”is it possible to axchange it but he said “yes!but only store credit “i took risk to buy it since he gave me the assurance that i can exchange it with stire credit i mean who doesnt love thrifting? i went to the store by the next day to return but the employe turn back on me they would do anything “ i was dissapointed on how they treated me and sais they already talked to the manager?” oh yeah well i called to store and deliver my concern i know people made mistake but atleast hear me out i was telling them politely but some of them it said for us its working but for you its not we cannot do anything about it glad i called! and sergio was the nicest of them all!!!

I’ve been shopping here for a number of years and was always generally pls with my purchases. Two months ago, I bid on a large gold ring that was offered in their auction. The items are locked in a secure cabinet where these items can only be viewed and not examined by touch. This ring attracted much attention and bids. It was identified on the description sheet for the auction as being stamped 14 k gold. They indicated on the description bidding sheet that the diamonds on the ring did “not test well”. So the diamonds were not real and essentially disclosed that. Otherwise the ring was beautiful to me and I decided to go to the store to bid on it the evening that the auction was to close. Many people were there for the same item. I placed several bids along with other customers and was lucky to get the winning bid (so I thought ). I paid over 400.00$ plus tax and left the store excited with my new purchase.
A few weeks later I happened to be at highly respected jewelry store downtown Ottawa for a work related retirement purchase. I just happened to be wearing the ring that day. As I was in the store, I decided to ask the jeweller how much it would cost to replace the “crystals” on the ring with gemstones representing my family. I gave the ring to the store to appraise the cost of upgrading the stones. Within about 3-4 minutes of leaving the jewelry store, I received a call from the jeweller informing me that the ring was fake. I thought they were referring to the “stones” and I reassured them that I knew they weren’t real diamonds. They proceeded to inform me that the entire ring was fake. It wasn’t 14k gold and it was costume jewelry. I was stunned, disappointed and embarrassed. They gave me the ring back immediately.
I think the Mission Store has a policy that doesn’t guarantee authenticity in these auctions. It’s a buyer beware policy. However with such high priced items they should test for the “gold”. They seem to do the testing for diamonds but don’t test for gold. It was stamped as 14k and that was written in the auction description sheet. If they can’t be sure that the item is genuine, perhaps the donated jewelry should be brought by their staff at a reputable “gold buyer” such as Canada Gold to verify authenticity. They could sell the gold for the gold value at Canada Gold were they test, as oppose to”Missions” selling to their customers. They would then know if it’s real as oppose to fake and sell it accordingly. They really should revisit their selling practices on such pieces.
I have gone to the store twice in the past month to explain my experience to a manager or the person in charge of the auction (jewelry). I think it’s best that they r informed. I also left my number and nobody has tried to reach back out to me. I also bought earrings and a necklace that same evening “stamped as gold” but haven’t gotten those tested. Quite honestly, I’d rather not know as it was quite a sinking feeling to find out the ring was fake. Anyways… sorry for the long explanation but I felt it was best to share this experience so others don’t make the same error as I. The store really needs to change their approach when selling expensive items . I realize they r a non profit organization but they should change their approach with jewelry/watches etc… it’s not right to sell none authentic items to the public. They could go about differently.

I love this place, I go weekly. Great prices compared to other thrift stores and they often have tag sales that make’s it even better. I always feel like I’m being followed in this store though. But it’s the best thrift store in the city in my opinion. And the stock is allways changing and tag deals make’s it more affordable. Most of the staff or volunteer's are very friendly.

I was embarrassed, offended and insulted by a cashier at this location and I will never spend one more dollar here ever again. The item I was going to buy was priced in two places, once on the actual item and again on the box it was in. The cashier embarrassed me saying with attitude that the price is too low for this item, insinuating that I had changed the price tag. She suddenly grabbed it off of the counter and took it to the back without explaining herself. I looked at my sister embarrassed and said “What just happened? What was that? What is going on?” The rude cashier took my purchase to the back and had the price changed to make it $2 more expensive!!!! After she returned with the inflated price and her attitude that I have somehow done something wrong I took the item out of the box to show her the other price tag and that the price on the box was correct and to prove to her that I did not change the price and try to STEAL from this store! What an insult! I have to point out that this cashier made my item $2 more expensive and it’s TWO weeks before CHRISTMAS!!!! This miserable cashier should be ashamed of herself and how she has made this repeat customer feel because SHE wanted to charge me an extra TWO DOLLARS!

I am a regular at the other location in London. This is my first time at this location
I found the store clean with lots of options.In my personal opinion it feels like a lot of the items are way overpriced.Out of every Thrift/Second hand store this has to be store that is competing for market value or more?They have a vintage section which has beautiful pieces that have been donated but these prices are what you would pay at an antique market in Toronto. There website states

I spend a lot here on furniture,household items and clothing and have recommended everyone i know to go to the Mission Thrift Store as there proceeds support people in the community but the point of stores like this is to help people in need and not to price gouge. I also felt like I was being guilted for getting a speciality shirt that was supposedly "worth way more then it was purchased at" ..Never even heard of the brand

Love coming here but it is hit or miss (like all thrift stores). I do find that the prices are very reasonable/affordable compared to other thrift stores in the area. Most staff is super friendly but I did get yelled at once by an older lady for misplacing something I had picked up (minus a star for that)! Otherwise love coming here though. :)

This was my first time in this store and I was so pleasantly surprised how everything felt organized and clean and electronics were marked as “tested” so you could trust they worked. The prices were low and I found some neat little trinkets. The cashiers Theresa and Joel were super friendly and professional and thanked me for coming in and offered me a bag for my items. Joel explained where the funds from my purchase go when I asked. I was just super impressed! The store felt like a regular store and the customer service felt

I returned a week later and found a cute little Christmas tree for one of my children’s bedrooms. As I was browsing Diane noticed and let me know they had more trees so I got a matching one for my other child. Then she showed me lights and ornaments and I just was thrilled with how helpful they were. Can’t wait to visit again!

I'm not impressed for the sole reason that I can't try on clothes anymore. It forces us to return home and if the clothes don't fit, we can only exchange. And, the exchange happens when you return. If you don't spend what you're exchanging then you lose the dollar amount. Nice way of padding your bottom line folks!!!

The prices here are wonderful, and the variety in formal clothing is awesome. If you're looking for blazers, suits and dress pants for example this is one of the more affordable locations to go to. My only gripe is that if you're big and tall like me it can be hard to find your size forcing you to have to go and buy elsewhere where the prices are much higher since it is new clothing. The condition of most of the formal clothing at the Salvation Army Thrift store is basically new.

Wonderful thrift store! Went there on vacation to Niagara Falls. The owner and his mother are super sweet. Both very personable and kind. They even suggested local restaurants for my family and I to go while on vacation. Found some really great pieces (clothes, jewelry and decorative furniture pieces). Love this place wonderful thrift store!

So many unique stuff available. Loved the crockery and books stock.

I was there for the first time I found a few things and when I got to the cash I was asked if I had a coupon I said no I don’t have a coupon. I was not aware of the coupon you pick up on the back so I was gonna leave my stuff and go get a coupon. She just charged me the full price without Giving me that chance so I paid and walked out. I was a little bit disappointed.

I want to say to the staff at the salvation army... Thank you for what y'all do I'm a retired veteran an me an my wife donate regularly there an shop from time to time. Excellent staff an me an my wife want to give a big salute to the gentlemen at the donation door. Very polite very hard worker... I really can't do to much lifting he helps me evertiime. I sat in the truck today , and watched him while my wife was in the store. He helped unload a truck 2 cars. Then I see him coming out the store door loading up another customer. Basic thrift store. For sure a rummage place to dig and find. Most things should just go.....good clothing and kids sections. Random treasures if you look hard. Pricing is inconsistent and out of wack sometimes. Bring your own bags.

Very clean store. Offering very good quality second hand items at really acceptable prices. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they seem to go out of their way to give customers a very upscale boutique type shopping experience. I don't get to go downtown often but I make the effort to check them out when I do. I appreciate their help dressing my ever growing toddler.

Mission thrift stores are the most organized thrift stores I have ever been in. Was looking at the crafts today. Slid a bucket out 6 inches to have a better look as it was on the second shelf. Looked and slid it back in to the exact same spot. An older female employee came up behind me and moved it over 6 inches and told me to put I back in the same spot. I told her, I did NOT move it, I put it back in the exact same spot. She said they have a problem with people moving things, so I stated again that I did not move it, I put it back in the exact same spot. She said Sorry but not for accusing me of moving the bucket. And she did not even put it back above the labeled spot. Before having staff or employees accuse customers of doing something, maybe make sure things were wrong before commenting.

First time visiting this thrift store today and it was a great experience! The volunteers go above and beyond, the prices and promotions are great, and the things I got were all in great condition. Absolutely no complaints! Will definitely be returning! 😊

Been here a few times, the volunteers are super nice, we have this one lady that always comes up to us whenever we would come in and told us about all the specials they had going on. They always have specials at the front of the store close to holidays or for back to school. Lots of books at a reasonable price. They have discount by sticker colour system where each day a different sticker colour is on sale. Makes it a pleasant change because you never know what’s on sale that day. Very good finds. Will definitely come back.

Mitchell is the best handy man and a very friendly staff member. Always working hard in the shop and able to offer great advice at all times! Natalie was working up front today and she is always so friendly, keeps the floor clean and organized and is also very helpful if needed. Highly recommend coming here!

My favourite thrift store in the city. I come here frequently to check new arrivals in the books section at the back of the store. The store is very clean. Their donation drop off area is at the back of the building.

We asked to have a piece of lumber cut in half so it would fit into our car and were told that they were too busy, it would have taken no more than 1 minute, needless to say, we didn' buy it.

This was such a fun shop and had a lot of interesting things. Had a fun conversation with the shop owners about us being in the area for our anniversary. Definitely check it out and support their business.

I love this place. Came here for the second time recently and its just as great. They have a great collection and theres just everything. You could get lost in it for a good hour. And theyre super nice people running it. One day im gonna get a good job and make a big donation
They have these secret memes all around the shop about shoplifting. I wonder how common it is for it to become a big deal, also considering theres a program where you can ask for food/water and clothes for free

I have visited this store on numerous occasions and have always found it clean and well cared for. The prices are fantastic and I have found many quality items at very good prices. I would highly recommend a visit.

I use to shop here all the time, but once you changed the name, painted ect., your prices went up so high. We also use to donate a lot to your store. We no longer shop or donate

It was a good experience for the most part . I just felt that staff could be a little more interactive with their clients. I plan to go back and see what they have to offer this time .

The thrift store is large and pleasant to shop in. The racks are not crowded so you can easily see what is there. I went shopping for crafts and found envelopes, packs of cards, paper clips, notepads for under $11 including tax. There were books, clothes, housewares, bedding, toys and puzzles. Great shopping, clean store and friendly staff. Upcycling is awesome!

I use to LOVE going there until they closed there customer washroom. I don't go now because I think its disrespectful to not have a washroom just in case someone needs it. Sometimes I spend over an hour in there and sometime I may need to go, so now I don't bother going. I complained about it but they don't care I guess. If the washroom cleanliness was an issue because there workers also use it, then hire someone to come in every day to clean it. Customers are not that dirty you know!.

This is a great shop to visit, and often has a treasure or two. Pricing is more reasonable than other places, and their items have been consistent since they opened. Seems like a great group of volunteers. Always pleasant.

Great place to meet up with friends, get some free needed clothes, and other necessities. Always a kind place to be. People can go to enjoy coffee, lunch, and emergency food pantry, which is very easy to access.
My friend, and I meet there every week for light hearted conversation, shopping, and lunch! What would we do without this place?
Her, and I call it our one stop shopping mall! We often leave with cool treasures for our homes, and/or something new to wear. We wouldnt be able to afford going out somewhere to lunch, and shopping. So, its definitely a special place in our hearts! Thank you Vinnies!!! You rock!

One of the very best things about Kingston is its Social Conscience. This active Charity doubles as a Food Bank, Donation Centre and Thrift Centre.

This by far the most amazing thrift store in the city. They support arch! Bought myself a nifty little deep fryer there for a whole $5!

Terrible experience here. We desperately needed a larger pot and the only one they had was 10 dollars and had a severe burn spot on the bottom and could be also seen right through to the interior. I asked the girl at the desk if there was any chance of a price reduction and she insisted they didn't do that. I asked if there was a manager I could speak to and she said no. Then she said the manager was in the back. I asked if someone could tell the manager I would like to talk to them. (They were not busy in the store at all). The next thing I know she walks over to a woman working about 20 feet away beside the checkout and that apparently was the manager! The manager says to me that NO they don't do reductions, even when I showed her the burn and the high price. I was calm and said that I thought it was overpriced. She said that they were 40 dollars new and it was priced as such. I was appalled by her tone and attitude for a Christian based thrift shop. And mostly appalled that in these lean times for some people, that a thrift shop that serves the needs of people who struggle in the world could not be more compassionate.

The manager is very friendly and her staff too, my experience has been very good on Richmond Road, the prices are always good and I have found better products than other stores so I visit the store.

Changing my review after a second bad experience here. It’s a shame since they have a great selection here and it’s well priced but some of the volunteers are just plain mean. The younger volunteers I’ve dealt with have always been nice, but the older staff is rude and unhelpful. I understand that they’re volunteers but maybe don’t volunteer somewhere if your goal is to make people as uncomfortable as possible. If you come here, be careful about which volunteers you talk to cause some of them are out to ruin your day. (Not all of the volunteers, just a few of the older ones I’ve dealt with).

I've been in here twice and the ladies running the place are the friendliest I've ever met. I know alot of people tend to donate to bigger thrift stores but please think about helping out my neighbours closet. They help kids in school and I feel that's very worthy of your donations. They take clothing furniture in real clean shape and much more.

My mother and i go here at least once a week. The staff and manager are amazing and friendly. I recommend this store to everyone. We always find something wonderful , unique at great prices!!

I like the new ideal of a new location this location is perfect for the Salvation Army I had a chance I'm checking it out today and from what some people said I'm sorry but it is not overly big overall it's about the same size as the previous location but at least as you coming in Bells Corners you do see the Salvation Army compare to where it was it was off shoulder and even know where it was business still came in so here's the new update of pictures of this location I had mentioned to the staff that I will be posting their new location because on this site only has the older pictures of the Salvation Army so when I did look on Google Map it was a little bit weird an unusual got me a bit confused because it look like you had to how to get there you had to go by the back but technically it's false and it actually has two ways to get in there you could come from the front and the back but anyways I wanted to share these pictures and put up to speed up and help out or new pictures and one thing my dad had mentioned to me is between the new location delighted inside is not super Lee bright apparently the older location was a lot brighter and you know something if you take a look at several pictures that I took inside I do agree on what my dad was saying there's just not enough litedge in this location to be bright it's kind of dark the way that my dad said hopefully they do add more lights hopefully

I am a volunteer at this store. We all take such pride in this Mission Store. We did our research on pricing and we do our best to be the lowest priced store in the area. Everything electronic is tested, only the highest quality clothes get put on the shelves, we only accept furniture from non smoking homes. We all make the biggest effort to have the store clean and welcoming for anyone dropping by. Great place to come in, browse, chat with volunteers. We do our best to be the best :)

I like this store and drop by at least once a month. There is some nice used furniture at very fair prices, also clean appliances which have been checked out and deemed working. Some folks do not understand what new items cost, they want quality used items for nothing. This is a fine organization and the staff are great.

Lots of variety and extremely low prices. Helpful staff. Go often inventory changes daily. Got a fantastic deal on a storm door.

The service at this location is always pleasant. The store is neat and orderly. Prices are a bit higher than other Alberta locations.

Great place to come and grab a bite to eat, enjoy people's company and take home free items for your home/wardrobe. Also, an amazing place to donate your time (or items unwanted from your home) to help out in the community. Welcoming staff, wonderful volunteers and all around great people.

Love this place open 9am-1pm. They serve a free lunch i think everyday. They have food bank like service as well as clothing, houseware, toys and more all free for those in need. They are kind and do there best to accommodate everyone.

Honestly one of the worst salvation army stores I've ever been to. Not well laid out and just a weird feeling when you go in there. Don't waist your time I doubt you will actually find anything worth buying.
