Just visited for my first time and I will be back for sure. Cool atmosphere in the space, great service from the staff and the food options were top notch. Our favourite dish was the Honjin Trinity oshi zushi roll, which was so mouthwatering and savoury. Every dish was really carefully prepared, we enjoyed everything we ordered. Other dishes pictured include the 3 kind sashimi (chefs choice), seared Hokkaido scallop oshi zushi, lamb chops, and beef tataki.

First time coming to an Izakaya in Calgary and we weren’t disappointed here at Honjin. The Oshi sushi is absolutely delicious and the pricing is very fair. They use high quality ingredients and flavours were amazing! They gave us a box of pocky with a sparkler and sang happy birthday to my partner which was very wholesome. I plan to bring my friends and family here in the near future.
Long overdue review! I've had the pleasure of eating at Honjin for many times now, it is one of my favorite Japanese Izakaya in town.
Food taste authentic and presentations are top notch. Most items on menu are decently priced. Their seafoods are all very fresh, and their Wagyu are easily some of the best you can have in town.
Staffs are very accommodating, even when they make mistakes, they are quick to fix it. You often feel very welcoming and making the overall experience pretty enjoyable.
They also often have deals on their website for party platters. Definitely worth the trip for pick up!

$1.50 oyster specials in the evening. There's a great selection of robata from the grill and special sushi roll on the menu. My sake loving friend from Taiwan approved the alcohol menu. Cool interior and I'm curious to check out the patio when it gets warmer.
It's been a while I didn't get some fresh oysters and now they hv promotion for $1.5 dollars each. Size is small but tasty. Worth for a try if u r oyster lover! And I ordered other Bento fory kids, they love it too.
Nice place to hang out with friends to have a drink. The dish is in a small portion with a reasonable price. The beef skewers are really dry and Less taste. The chicken heart is also no taste. The rest of dishes are pretty acceptable with the price. Will come back to dry other dishes.

So the New Zealand lamb was okay the picture make it look so big and juicy but the real life was miniature dish. The bento box was again miniature. All the grill skewers was awesomely miniature. The hamburger dish meat was is also miniature. The only good thing was the giant jumbo chicken karaage so that was big. The only thing negative about this place is that they could have cleaned the table properly so make sure you clean the table with your own wipe because I don't know what they're using for table cleaning but it's not working we brought our own wipe and the table was visibly black. Not sure how long the germs and the dirt has been accumulating but yes they have to really fix up their cleaning routine. See pictures attached. The service was okay I don't like how there's so managers or supervisors walking around prancing and looking around looking so unhappy and stressed out.

This Japanese Restaurant is one of THE BEST ONE in Calagry. Staff here are absolutely nice. Our server Wakana is the sweetest. Their bento is definitely a must try!! Though the price is a bit high, it's totally worth every bite!!

Food was great, the restaurant had an authentic vibe. Servers were prompt and friendly. Reservations are definitely recommended. Beer was cold and the skewers were all tasty, there wasn’t one that we didn’t like. Will return when have more time to explore other items on the menu.
Love coming here for date nights. Going again very soon! Service is good, food and drinks are amazing. I feel very welcomed when I come here. It’s a bit expensive depending on what you order but some of the more expensive items are worth trying at least once 🤤. I also love the vibe of the place. Super cosy and unique. Cant wait to go back!!
The katsu don is a bit salty, otherwise things are good. Staff are really nice and helpful.

Went on Tuesday after work. Foods are delicious, but the price was not too friendly for the portion. The skewers are a must try. Had one wasabi octopus, one set b skewers, two bowls of ramen, and one mochi dessert, paid about $100. Not 100% satisfied with the service, lack of training for the front of house, especially the lady who does phone reservation.
Overall great first experience. Food is well priced with many options to suit all sorts of palates. Cozy and warm environment. Music is at a reasonable level and a decent cocktail menu. Will return
A really cool spot to grab some skewers and other Japanese comfort foods. The skewers were a little dry but I really enjoyed the unagyu-don.
The place used to be a classic choice for Japanese izakaya skewers, but the quality now is disappointing. The rigid service and mediocre taste of the food really don’t interest me. The only thing that might pique my interest is the price of the alcohol in the store.
Food was fine for certain items. Definitely the yakitori skewers were a bit less to be desired as most items were overcooked. However, in terms of the nigiri sushi the fish was as fresh as you expect in a landlocked area in Toronto (and in comparison to the west). Their highlights was the yuk-hey (raw Korean beef tartar) and sushi rolls.. I would highly recommend that. As for the other items...the yakitori wasn't as good as I expected to other places I've been. But servicer was very attentive and food comes out super quick.
Great atmosphere and great service! Servers were all very friendly and attentive. Some items we ordered were delicious but prices were on the higher end. The presentation for the Chicken Samurai ($25) was unique but not worth the price in my opinion. I'd recommend the Gyu Don ($18) and the Sweet Potato Fries ($7)! I also ordered the Matcha Hi cocktail, which was very strong. I liked and prefered the Lychee Mojito a lot more.
Hopped in for a quick snack. I can see this izakaya being lively at night. Their decor and wall interiors were pretty cool.

Brilliant food, incredible service. Took care of my allergy needs with tremendous attention and knowledge from the entire staff and made our group feel incredibly welcome.
Went on a Saturday evening, had reservations. Ordered a variety of tapas and skewers. Food was okay, nothing special compared to other izakayas. Prices were quite high for the portions, paid about $60 a person and was not full/satisfied. The best was the Scallop Tataki Roll and the Polar Beer was interesting.
Wow. Just, wow. A flawless meal and an awesome dining experience. Beautiful establishment, super friendly staff, extensive menu, reasonably priced... and the food was absolutely outstanding. So good we asked for our menu back to order more. We will definitely be back and we would strongly recommend Kintaro to anyone. Wow.
The drinks were great! The food was okay. For the price we would have hoped for a bit better, but maybe our expectations were a bit high. The clams were honestly good, but the skewers were quite dry and for most of the food the flavours were bland or not super well rounded. The service was great and the atmosphere was nice though so I hope the food can improve in the future.
Hidden gem in Toronto away from the hustle and bustle on Dundas. Lots of traditional Izakaya options. The oden was delicious, lot of spirits, traditional Japanese beers.
Delicious food!! We loved everything we ordered. Food also came out pretty quickly. Our server was friendly and attentive. A bit expensive but we’re happy we tried it! For large groups, 20% auto gratuity is included in the bill, and they require a deposit to hold the table. The deposit is refunded to you immediately after your visit.
Very good atmosphere and service was great even though I have asked for lots of veggie questions. Staff are willing to help and serve.
Veggies Yakitori shewers were amazing. Oden was decent and lots of veggies variety.

Have been to the same Izakaya in Toronto for many times. First time visit this one in Vancouver. The atmosphere makes me feel like in Japan. Friendly service (well served by Takashi San through out the whole dinner), food standard was same as Toronto restaurant, like the charcoal grilled skewers. Right price for the food quality and service.
Let’s start with the food, the seafood skewers set were nice, loved the shrimp, as well as the scallops, the unagi was good as well but nothing too special. I would give it a 6/10.
Next the beef skewers, half of them were dry, the rest (I think was beef tongue) was slightly better, but it was a let down, not a bang for your buck. 4/10

Decent place. The food was delicious, service and ambiance were good. It's a popular spot, so be sure to make a reservation before you come. Plus, their extended hours until 2am make it a great choice for a late-night hangout. Highly recommended.
Tuna Tataki was fresh and seared lightly on the outside for a firmer edge and tender interior, with a nice balance from the wasabi vinagairette with mustard seeds inside, topped with green onion for a melt in your mouth experience. Came with a small salad that also went well with sauce.

Skewers were alright, all had a nice smoky flavour but the bacon wrapped with rice cake had a nice texture, but the bacon lacked its juiciness and saltiness. The pork was a little bland. The tomatoes were sweet and burst in your mouth, the chicken with grilled green onions were good. Onions were sweet and fragrant with juicy chicken. The beef was also juicy and satisfied my beef craving.
Overall though, I found the portions to be a little small for the price, yet fulfilling.

We order a bunch of stuff, meat is flavorful and cooked to perfection! Maybe a smidge too salty but no complaints! Portions are small for the price but hey they r rlyyy goooood! The seat we sat at even has the call server/bill button which I loveeee!
